Because he does not want to feed his wife and daughter with unhealthy breakfast sandwiches and bad coffee!!!

The man is a saint! I wish I was married to a man who had the courage to go through such a humiliating experience for me. How very painful it must have been for him! *drying a tear of compassion*

Yep, you've got it right! Good roles are few and far between....because Hollywood has basically thrown its, shall we say, more mature actors in the dustbin in favor of very talentless actors who look good on camera. What we get in place of quality films are run of the mill garbage. I frequently sit astonished in movie theaters watching previews, and I can't believe the incredible waste of celluloid and money spent on trash. Worthless trash.

In order to keep your SAG and AFTRA cards, you have to do so much work per year. That means voiceovers, commercials and a whole lot of stuff you wouldn't be caught dead in. Without the above unions, you DON'T work. It's a bleepin' shame, but that's the way it is in the business. And if you're not doing SOMETHING, you definitely don't work. Hence the McDonald's commercial from Hell. But DW has raised his daughter and made the sacrifices he had to be a father. He needs to now start thinking of his career. Major Barbara is definitely a step in the right direction.

I would not want to think of DW ending his days like another great British character actor -- the great Basil Rathbone, so memorable as Sherlock Holmes and Sir Guy of Gisborne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (Errol Flynn. His final film was "Hillbillies in a Haunted House." That is a legacy and disgrace I would never want to see happen to our hero. He has worked far, far too hard and too much to have that happen to him.

Well, I've only seen the first two, thankfully.
But here's one last gasp for my old site title:
No Matter How Fancy You Garnish Your American Cheese And Egg McMuffin, It's Still Just Chee-zee!
And speaking of being typecast and wasted, the one eye-opening thing about the Sam West sites for me is, I've realized the David Warner Syndrome can happen even to the conventionally pretty. West has played tons of quirky small parts and second male leads, he's not even mentioned on video boxes of some films he's been in, and the biggest mass media role he's gotten to date has been The Ripper! Whatta rip is right! Of course now he's playing Hamlet, maybe things will change.
(Happy 4th to the Yanks, belated Canada Day to Cinephilia, etc. etc.)

I couldn't agree more. As a matter of fact, three of "my actors" (DW, John Hurt and Henri Guybet) have been in so much cheesy stuff... I call them the "Camembert Trio" (with affection of course). I'm really impressed when they shine in a rotten flick. It must be much harder to act well in something that you know is way past salvation right from the very first day of shooting. They are Les Grands Maîtres du Fromage.

And, let's face it: isn't it much better for DW to do an obscure voiceover for McDonald's that absolutely no one will remember in six months than star in a career-breaking vehicle like Naked Souls? A NS video will always be available somewhere in the world...

Yes, it can. Especially if the prettiness is too conventional. When you look like a hundred other actors, it must be next to impossible to get yourself noticed. I'm sure that Sam is a much better actor than his American look-alike, Ryan Philippe, but Philippe is the one who is a star.

>West has played

The thing is... When an actor plays a lot of quirky small parts, directors have trouble to imagine him as a sensitive, intelligent, normal human being (a regular lead role) and they just give him more quirky small parts. That's what happened to Guybet. Sure, he got to play several second male leads and three starring roles during his movie career, but he didn't have the career that a man with his talent would have deserved. Compared to him, and to Sam West until now, our DW has been pretty lucky.

Maybe! I really wish him the best. Besides, the HFP sure deserves to see her god in at least one good starring role in one good movie...

Thanks Jen! The same to you!

LOL!
Maybe someone should bring a plate for his birthday, are there any Hickory Farms shops left in malls anymore, or do they just set up those holiday stalls now?

And Philippe is the Cary Ewles of the new millennium, or something, right? I really can't tell these blond kids apart.

That's the feeling I get.

Yes, especially since The Ripper is universally despised in that group, and deservedly so. Time After Time is bloody and depressing, but this is the sort of hypocritical trash that's "safe" enough for an airplane screening because it doesn't "show" anything. The word "appalled" comes to mind so easily, as in, "What am I THINKING? Am I seriously getting a jones for Jack the Ripper?" The answer is of course not.

As usual, Payne's Girl you've said it best. I find myself in the same situation--that is watching commercials for upcoming movies or trailers for previews and wondering how and why. I have to be honest. If I were driving to work in the morning and I heard the McDonald's commercial, it word make my day though. Just hearing that voice.....

If only you had been in my shoes and stood inches away from the man with that voice wafting through the air. I almost keeled over because his voice was so darn beautiful!!! He could read a McDonald's menu, Chinese takeout menu or Starbucks menu to me anytime and it would sound like Shakespeare, or close to it.
