It's true what you say, about Frawley's insurance not being renewed, and about how his departure had already been decided. However, the Ireland farewell episode didn't specify that Bub was leaving for good, even if off-screen that was a done deal. It seemed to indicate that Bub was taking a leave of absence from the Douglas household, or something like that, and he and the Douglases acted as if he might return someday. The scene with Chip, however, may have been a subtle way of alerting the viewer that Bub would not be back, and the very next episode, Uncle Charly's debut, that I described in my last post, already had William Demarest's name in the opening sequence, where it says, with the theme song playing, "My Three Sons, starring Fred MacMurray; and as Uncle Charly, William Demarest". That was the clincher.

Goodnight.
Joe
