Noting the child’s change in attitude, Baylina could not help but see the gleam within Nitasha’s once sullen face. The girl touched a soft spot in Bay, though the headstrong woman refused to fall prey to the same feelings of duty she had once had over Lyra. Those days were history –what good would training a child do for Rome? Craven barely accepted the fact that Baylina could fight, much less train others, so an attempt would likely bring about her own death sentence, or the loss of her freedom.

A surprised passed over Bay’s features at Nitasha’s next question. “Your mistress?” the woman asked a bit confused, but then she understood what the child was implying. ‘She wants me to buy her from Craven…’ Bay thought to herself; had she really made that large of an impact on the girl? It seemed so unlikely, for she had only known the girl for a little while.

“I’ll see what I can do,” she told Tasha, giving her some hope on the matter. Bay figured she could at least speak with Craven about it, “I will mention it to the king the next time I have the pleasure of seeing him again.” Her words were edgy and sarcastic, but Bay did not attempt to hide how she felt about the King. Perhaps her opinion would change with time, but he had not made a suitable first impression to the former Sarmatian, so Baylina had little reason to trust or respect him.

She fell silent once more, and then a thought crossed her mind, “Why don’t you show me around this place…” Bay stood up, and expected Nitasha to do the same, figuring the child wouldn’t mind showing her where everything was.
