Author: The Chief
Subject: Spam and "Turing Numbers"

After reading Judi's post today on the HB about instituing "Turing Numbers" to protect us from spam, I was wondering if the term was named after Alan Turing, considered the father of modern computer science.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Turing

A favorite author of mine, Donna Andrews, has written 4 mysteries using the name Turing for an Artificial Intelligence Program that is the main character and crime-solver. They're wonderful, fascinating stories, funny and thoughtful and full of cool computer stuff. Judi, you'd probably love these!! The AIP is named "Turing Hopper". Hopper is for Grace Hopper, a computer scientist and - get this - NAVAL officer! (so there's even a Harm/JAG connection, albeit tenuous) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Hopper

The books are titled: "You've Got Murder", "Click Here for Murder", "Access Denied" and "Delete All Suspects".

Check 'em out!

[> Chief, I'm going to look up that author. Mysteries + NerdStuff = a great read for me. LOL I LOVE Grace Hopper. Here's a video where she's interviewed by Letterman and does her 'nanosecond' demonstration. Click here for the Letterman interview She's a real female role model. Click here for a brief bio on Grace including finding a real bug in the first computer -- judi - Never seeing Grace Hopper in person is one of my life's regrets, 11:18:46 10/12/07 Fri [1]

[> [> That was *delightful* judi! Thanks for the link! Gosh, that episode had to be from the late 80's!! I think they were talking about Reagan still being president! Loved the nano-second and pico-second descriptions, too! -- The Chief, 07:49:17 10/15/07 Mon [1]

[> [> OMG, I am so jealous. I joined a computer group in 1986 and the year before she spoke there. That was the closest I got which wasn't very close. -- judi, 13:30:19 10/12/07 Fri [1]
