  Thanks again for the help for my first question, a few posts down. I was able to un-install, then re-install, and it seems to be fine.
  
  Now, the new question: Our DVD player is choosing not to work at the moment, so I put the DVD (JAG II) in the computer, as we have Windows Media Player. I figured out how to play it, and I watched the whole episode, but the video was jerky, and was a second or two behind the audio. It wasn't jumpy like a DVD player stopping, where the picture may break up and it stops for several seconds. This was just continually...well, not smooth. I could watch it OK, and the audio sounded fine. Does anyone know what to do to smooth things up? The computer is not very new--it's a Dell, probably 6 or 7 years old, with Windows XP (which was loaded on a few years ago by a friend/computer expert who now, unfortunately, is living in Atlanta!). Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • Deemus, you might try closing all other applications. It could be that there isn't enough memory to run it. You could even have things running in your background you don't know about. You can check CPU usage by right clicking on your task bar and bring up task manager. Click on performance. Your CPU may be occupied by programs running in your background.     • How much CPU usage should there be? When I checked the way you suggested, the little graph bounced around between about 7% and 13%. There were other numbers about available space, and paged whatever, and other mysterious (to me) things. Any thoughts on this?   This is a super-easy question, I'm sure, for anyone with a little techno-savvy (which doesn't include me, as you will see!). Here's the scoop: I installed a program from a CD-ROM. All went fine. It asked me where I wanted it (or some such as that). There was a list of options, but the only one I recognized was the start-up menu. I thought that would put it on the bar you hit to go find programs that you don't use enough to put on the desktop. Nope. Now when I turn on the computer, the welcome screen to the new program ends up all over the desktop, instead of my nice country field wallpaper. (The new program is also an icon on the desktop.) Everything works fine, and I can cancel out the program to do other stuff, but how do I get it off the middle of the screen every time I turn it on? I still want the program, but I don't want it in my face whenever I turn on the machine. (See how little I know about computers?) Can anyone tell me how to rearrange this? Many thanks in advance!

  • It sounds like you put it in the "Startup" folder and not the Start Menu. Things in the startup folder open when you start up the computer. If I'm not mistaken, anything you install will automatically be listed in the "All Programs" section of your start menu, you shouldn't have to actually put it there.     • Probably not. It might depend on what the purpose of the registration is. You could try to register again and it might tell you you've already registered. Or you could try not registering again and see if you come across any problems.   Music industry is suing Limewire
  
  For those of you not familiar with Limewire, it's a site that allows you to download music for free. It's a P2P (peer to peer) site which loosely means you are sharing files with other users. It's like you let a friend borrow your cd and put it on their computer. However, sites like Limewire takes it on a much larger scale and just about everything is up there.
  
  At what point does it go from file sharing to outright piracy? I guess that will be determined in court.
  
  Any thoughts on this?

                • Funny thing is, only 5 of the 11 songs on the album are available for download on iTunes and the RealPlayer music store. Only Walmart.com has all 11 songs available for purchase individually, and that was not the case a year or so ago. You may be on to something. This particular album is all guest artists, so to speak.   I have been watching JAG videos lately and have a question. How do you make a color picture/video black and white with only one person in color. I have noticed this technique on several vidoes. Especially the scene when Harm and Mac first met. It appears as if everthing is in black and white but the person in the close up first Harm and than Mac. How is this done? I've always wondered.   I am using SharePoint 2003 and have just purchased Visio 2007. Now that the d#%n! Visio 2007 is on my system I can no longer open the multitude of Word or PowerPoint files in SharePoint. The SharePoint guy is telling me to just uninstall the much needed Visio 2007. Visio 2007 is saying nothing at the moment. I have to use SharePoint because I need the secure server and I have tons of data that needs to be...well..shared. I hate them all!! MicroSoft is the output of the devil! Whoever runs MicroSoft Help is Belzeebub, himself! I am in "Can't do my job hell!"
  
  Does anyone know how to rectify the situation while still using both products? Please?

  I'm curious, is anyone using Vista yet? I helped PDXkaren buy a laptop and it came with Vista. But we had to jump through hoops to get it to talk to her wireless router. Apparently, there is a bug in Vista that won't let it work with some routers without using a static IP address.
  
  So if anyone is using Vista, what do you think of it? Have you encountered any problems?

  • I am still getting along on 98se and hope to for at least another 6 months while they work the bugs out of Vista. My computer is nearly 7 years old but I maintain it well and it does everything I need it to for the moment.     • Some advice for you or others that may be force to get Vista. You need at least a gig of memory. MS says you only need a half gig and most inexpensive computers only come with a half, but you really need a gig or you'll be throwing things at your very slow computer.   As it happened we returned to Frys and they had the fan I needed so Im safe for the moment. However I dont trust this state to last. I run two hard drives one for the programs and one for my files so I always have a backup and I backup my backup periodically. Too many crashes has taught me this.
  1. I need to know exactly how to save my address book for Outlook Express in Win XPPro to my backup drive.
  2. How do I save my e-mail files to the backup drive. I keep certain files for reference and I do not know of any program that will convert them to something readable in Word.
  3. I need the steps for then reinstalling these files if I have to start from scratch.
  
  I have found when messing with a new mother board I generally have to re-format the hard drive and I lose these files. Your instructions make it easier and different from anything Ive tried but just in case I mess up I need backups.
  
  Thank you very much. It will help me prepare for a worst case scenario.

  • Well, speaking as a person with 4 computers and 3 laptops in the house, and not all of them in working condition at the moment, yes it would be nice. We do have everything networked, but unless you have already gone over to the other computer, picked the target location, and shared it on the network, it can be a pain to copy things. And if the computers are on a wireless network, it can take twice as long as if both of them are wired in to the network.   I'm sure all you have heard about the American Idol contestant who has her pictures posted all over the internet. Is it a hoax? Photoshop is a very powerful tool. They may or not be real but are sure to destroy a reputation.
  
  Last week, I put a story about a 13yr old who got assaulted by a man she met on the internet.
  
  I've also read about malicious kids cyber-bullying their classmates.
  
  You can destroy a company's reputation by posting a bad review.
  
  But what do you do? Do you regulate the internet? You can't do that because the spam / porn /destructive sites will just go off shore.
  
  Also there is the freedom of speech issue and if you try to restrict it, it's a very slippery slope. Then who decides what is acceptable or not?
  
  It's already against the law to be a pedophile and the 13 yr old's parents have a responsibility to restrict their daughter's internet usage.
  
  But what about the AI girl? Did she pose for her boyfriend privately and he decide to put them online? The irony here is that she isn't a good singer but if they keep her on the show, many are likely to vote for her just because they've seen her on the internet.
  
  It's a mess but I don't see an acceptable solution. I don't want the internet regulated. Maybe they need to be able to prosecute someone like this girl's boyfriend for putting those private pictures up there. Can she sue him? Is there a precedent for this?

  • I think the rules for the internet should be the same as the rules for any other media. There is legal action that can be taken if someone sells or gives a nude picture of another person to a magazine for publication, without permission. The laws for the internet should be the same. The way to regulate it, is to transfer the laws that govern other publications to the internet as well. Things that are already illegal should be enforced regardless of the venue.       • I have absolutely no idea about any of this- but I do know I was having trouble with my computer at work shutting off my quickbooks or browser all the time and running as slow as molasses- my tech guy removed my nortons and the problem is gone. I also use AVG free for antivirus- Hope recommended it and it seems to work fairly well on all my computers.         • Everything points to Norton blocking the access. I spoke with Norton techs to help me but they wanted to charge me to make their product allow me to do my job. By that time my frustration level was over the top and I suggested the pay me to remove their 'garbage' from my computer. The conversation went down hill from there. I'll look into AVG.   • When you say VPN, are you using PC Anywhere or an actual VPN client provided to you by your company. If it's a VPN client then you should have no problems with firewall issues. If it's PC Anywhere, then you need to configure both your laptop and the desktop that you are going to view. Look at your literature for the port numbers to open.     • I'm using a true VPN. With my lap top I can get to exactly where I need to be. With my desk top I can access the network but once there I can not get to the 'desk top' or any where else.       • Is this VPN provided by your job? If so they should have some tips on how to configure your Firewall to allow for outgoing traffic. They should be able to give you port numbers so that you can create a rule that allows for your firewall to let that traffic out.         • The VPN was provided by the job sight. Everyone seems to be concentrating on finding the differences between the lap top and the desk top. They originally thought it was the cable modem or Time Warner but when the lap top worked going through the same router and modem that theory died. They kind of gave up once the lap top worked.       • The easy answer is to delete your files, but an expert can still get stuff off it. If you really want to get rid of data, you would have to reformat the hard drive. I have never bulit my own PC so not all that farmilar, But depending on the Motherboard might have to buy new RAM and possibly a new Network, Graphics card. So want to do some research first.   I need help! I *HAVE* to get faster internet access. I work out of my home, and load times for files right now is around 30 minutes per file. I already bought into one satellite internet company and it didn't work properly with the website I use for work.
  
  I am looking into two options right now and was wondering if anyone knew about them or had them. Wild Blue and HughesNet.
  
  I've heard good and bad about the first one. I overheard a man this weekend ranting about how much he hated Wild Blue and that it had horrible customer service. I think he mentioned a lawsuit against them, but I wasnt' actually in on the conversation.
  
  HughesNet is from directv and I know people who had DirectWay (the former name of the same thing?) and hated it.
  I don't know if Hughesnet is different or the same as Directway.
  
  The bad part is the 1 year contract you have with these things. Its like a cell phone service. You have to pay for a year even if the service doesn't really work for you, and its around $80 per month.
  
  So, any ideas? Satellite is my only option at the present time and I need help! Wild Blue is scheduled to come out here 3/6, but I still have time to change my mind.

  • . I have Hughes net and aside from the fact that surfing is not as fast as cable (Im spoiled) its okay. D/L is slower than cable too, but lots faster than dialup. Once I got it working with my computer there was no problem but I found tech support non-existent. Very heavy storms slow the service but Ive had few complete outages, no more than cable.   I just had the computers at work 'upgraded' from old windows 98 300 and 500 mhz computers to - windows 2000 (with office 2000) and 800mhz
  
  I know that's still old and slow for you experts - but it's a HUGE improvement in speed for me.

  now that I have windows 2000 and office 2000 - I seem to be having a problem opening some attachments in email and I can't figure out why.
  
  sometimes I click on a word doc and it gives me the regular option of open or save (usually I just want to read not save) - same thing with pdf- sometimes I get the read or save option.
  
  BUT- sometimes all I get is SAVE and it ticks me off cause I don't want to save the dumb file.
  
  any idea what the problem might be?

  • My uneducated guess is that it has more to do with your email program and not with your version of Word. I still use Office 2000 (even though I have a perfectly good copy of Office 2003 on the shelf) and I can't remember ever getting ONLY the save option and not the open option. But maybe I haven't been paying attention. But wait, you said you use Mozilla. Are you opening your email in Mozilla and not in Outlook or Outlook Express? Are you using a remote email like Yahoo?   • You mean the new Yahoo Beta version of Yahoo mail? If that's it, she can easily switch back. Once she logs in to her Yahoo Mail, up near the top of the page where it says "Welcome (yourname)" there should be a little link that says "switch back". If it's not that, have her click on "options" near the upper left of the page when she's signed it. There she can change all sorts of stuff around until she's happy with the view.   • Go to www.archive.org Right in the top middle of the page is the "way back machine". Type the www part of the address after the http:// that is already there, then hit the "Take me back" button. You will then see a menu of each version of the archives of that page, sorted by date. Click on the date you want to see, and there you go: back in time!   Ebay and Paypal fake emails are a big problem! Thought I'd post some tips for all of you Ebay users so you can more easily tell if the email you got is legit or not.
  
  Spoof emails usually want you to click a link and provide your personal information (username & password). NEVER click a link in any Ebay or Paypal email. You always can go to the website yourself and log in and take care of any problem. They will not ask you to take care of a problem by clicking a link.
  
  If it's a legit Ebay email, you can log in to your MyEbay page and the same email will be in your MyMessages inbox. If it's not there, it was not sent from Ebay. I suggest you check all Ebay emails this way.
  
  No Ebay or Paypal email will EVER have an attachment.
  
  Paypal and Ebay emails will address you by first and last name. Never the generic "dear member" or "dear user". Sure, some spoof emails address you by name also but many more use a generic greeting.
  
  If you get an email you suspect is a spoof, you should forward it to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com. They will quickly get back to you and tell you if it was a legit email or not.
  
  If you do happen to fall for one of these spoofs and click a link, immediately change your email password, your Ebay password, and your Paypal password. The Ebay homepage has a link right on it for Live Help. The one thing Live Help is good at doing is helping you if your Ebay account has been hijacked (taken over by someone else). Go there and chat with them and they can help restore your account to you.

• I have AOL and as all of you know there are problems with AOL and downloading some of the videos and other stuff. It was time to renew the Norton stuff.   No, its not a can of Spam in a tutu. Here is the official definition:
  
  spamdress is a slang term for spam e-mail address, a person's secondary e-mail address, which is used for registering to receive newsletters, discussion forums and for other Web sites requiring sign-ups where you may receive frequent e-mails. The spamdress is used in place of a primary e-mail address to assist in keeping spam out of the primary account. Also called spamaddress.
  
  I've always had a spamdress but didn't know it had a name. I have several emails for different purposes. I use my Hotmail whenever I have to subscribe to somethng. If I want to read an article in the NY Times, I use that address. When I want more info on a product, I use that address. This helps keep your primary address clean.
  
  Another hint. NEVER unsubscribe from a site unless you are sure they're legit. When you unsubscribe from a site, it lets them know you have a good address and then it gets sold. Pretty soon you are getting emails offering you a bigger penis or a new hot stock tip.
  
  Still, no matter how careful you are, those sneaky buggers seem to find their way into your email anyway.
  
  If anyone has other suggestions on how to keep spam out of your email, let's hear them.

Just because you know a bunch of friends and want to send them all the same email, they probably don't appreciate having their emails sent out to people they don't know. That is a sure fire way of losing control of where your email addy ends up. So if you use group mail, send everyone in blind copies. It works.
