Subject: HOEXES etc.

I've just received another email from a friend warning me about a Virus that uses the word "Invitation" in the subject, and also "Olympic Torch." I checked with snopes.com and it's an old hoax that makes its appearance around Olympic game years.

EVERY single warning email I've received over the years has been about a hoax virus. My friends have received the email from their friends and so on and so on. All the email warning sound the same, and use the same wording and offer the same kinds of advice on how to combat the (fake) virus/worm, etc.

What I want to know is what does a REAL warning look like, how are they sent out, and who sends them? These fakes waste everyone's time and often get the receivers into more trouble and costs. So how are we warned about real viruses? Anyone know?

I know one thing, I dump ALL emails from people who don't identify themselves clearly. I don't give them a second thought. I'm just not likely to open an Invitation email from a total stranger.

And when I send emails to people who might not recognize my email name, I state clearly in the subject box, who I am and what I writing about.

[> I don't think there is any emails that get sent out about real viruses. I think most of the junk nowadays is spam and not so much a virus. Rule of thumb don't open any attachment especially exe. Ask who sent it if they did really send it before opening. Do a virus scan on it before opening it also. Also be very careful about following links in an email. I usually don't more than likely take you to a site that will infect you. -- Hope, 07:20:56 11/04/07 Sun [1]

[> [> I think you must be right about the emails, Hope. What bugs me is that many people who aren't computer savvy, get taken in. I have a friend who was so upset about the "urgent" nature of her warning email, she passed it on to about 100 friends on two continents. It was hoak and she felt so stupid. -- Cece, 15:04:46 11/04/07 Sun [1]

[> I always know it's real if it comes from Judi! LOL Otherwise, I ignore, delete, whatever. -- The Chief, 11:20:38 11/08/07 Thu [1]
