Subject: What do y'all think about this?

I do have a question. Where are the parents? There are so many good blocking programs that there is no excuse this child should be on MySpace.

My niece has her computers set up so her children can't even log on without her typing in a password and then she has to approve every site they go to.

I obviously don't like perverts having access to children, but shouldn't it be up to the parents to monitor their children?

[> I agree Judi. I can not understand how parents can give kids such un-restricted access to the internet and all that's out there. Especially places like MySpace that enourage kids to post all about themselves, meet people, and give out personal info like phone numbers and addresses. Parents should definitely take responsibility for keeping their kids safe online. -- Sarahsue, 17:34:33 02/17/07 Sat [1]

[> Are you nuts, Sarahsue?!! Parents take responsibility for their children? Now you are asking too much. If that were the case, the parents who used their child's tragic misfortune to get 30 mil, would actually have to question their decision to let their child have unrestricted access to the internet. I guess many parents feel that their child is mature and responsible, so they let the kid have a computer, with full, high speed internet, in their bedroom.

My former next door neighbours had three children, now all teens. The eldest is 18 now. The ONE computer they had in the house was in the family room, in full view of everyone. They had an open stairway, so as soon as anyone came down the stairs, they could see the computer screen immediately. There is no way any of the kids could close a screen in time.

These same parents also had blocks on the tv. They were fun parents who were involved in their kids' lives without trying to be their buddies. Frankly, I think in this case, the parents should be charged for endangering their child. But that would put me in a fantasy world.

[> The article quotes someone as saying: "This is allowing sites like MySpace to avoid the responsibility to make the Internet safe for children." What are they smoking? Do they *really* think that it is even remotely possible for the Internet to be totally safe for children? The world itself is not safe for children, why should the internet be any different? What about the *parents'* responsilbility to keep the child safe? I don't get it. -- JAG Junkie (Ronda), 16:19:28 02/21/07 Wed [1]

[> [> You get it JJ, it's the parents who let their kids have webcams in their bedrooms, who don't. A lot of people still don't understand the internet, and how it's available world wide, under so many jurisdictions. It's not going to go away. People can't let the computer be a "baby-sitter" like they've let tv become. Teenagers, particularly, are at risk. -- Cece, 09:47:57 02/24/07 Sat [1]

[> It's the parents' responsibility to keep their child safe, IMO. When my kids were young, we had one computer, in the family room that was off the kitchen. The screen faced the center of the room. I also had AOL and its built-in parental controls. They had to wait till they were 18 to find all the bad stuff - that or visit friends with more lenient parents. We also did a lot of talking about how to stay safe. There are a lot of stupid parents out there. -- Ann, 20:58:47 02/27/07 Tue [1]
