Subject: Satellite Internet Access

I need help! I *HAVE* to get faster internet access. I work out of my home, and load times for files right now is around 30 minutes per file. I already bought into one satellite internet company and it didn't work properly with the website I use for work.

I am looking into two options right now and was wondering if anyone knew about them or had them. Wild Blue and HughesNet.

I've heard good and bad about the first one. I overheard a man this weekend ranting about how much he hated Wild Blue and that it had horrible customer service. I think he mentioned a lawsuit against them, but I wasnt' actually in on the conversation.

HughesNet is from directv and I know people who had DirectWay (the former name of the same thing?) and hated it.
I don't know if Hughesnet is different or the same as Directway.

The bad part is the 1 year contract you have with these things. Its like a cell phone service. You have to pay for a year even if the service doesn't really work for you, and its around $80 per month.

So, any ideas? Satellite is my only option at the present time and I need help! Wild Blue is scheduled to come out here 3/6, but I still have time to change my mind.

[> sj, I can't help you but I can tell you what I would do. First, I would put the co in google like "Wild Blue" + reviews or "Wild Blue " + problem. I would also call and see how fast you can get through. inside... -- judi, 10:39:29 02/27/07 Tue [1]

In Dallas, we had Directv for our cable and loved it except it went down everytime a big storm was brewing. That will happen with your internet too. But you have no choice so I would just find out everything I could about the companies. I never believe just one review because anyone can write anything including lies about a company.

[> [> I have read some of the reviews out there on the internet and they are downright scary. I've already had a bad experience with one satellite company not working correctly, but the failure was so bad they let me out of the contract. That was a small company and I'm afraid after all I've read of Wild Blue that I'll be screwed and out the $80/month. I'm hoping to get the opinions of someone I "know" on the board. -- sj, 11:55:49 02/27/07 Tue [1]

[> I had DirecWay before. HAD. D@#! thing wouldn't work when the sun went down. Then sometimes it would go blooey for no reason at all during the day. Tech support kept blaming the hardware. I use a wireless broadband service now, they put a little mini-satellite thingey on the roof. Not as fast as the zipper at work, but way better than dial-up...and it works 24/7 -- Carrotts, 11:54:36 02/27/07 Tue [1]

[> [> Ok carrotts, more details on the mini satellite thingy that does work please!!! I'd like to see if I can get something like that where I am. -- out in the middle of nowhere sj who is thinking from what I've read that satellite would be worse than dial up., 12:00:19 02/27/07 Tue [1]

[> [> [> It's called BamaWisp. They are a local company - you have to be in line of site of their antenna, but I think there is a network of those kinds of providers throughout the Country. -- Carrotts, 12:28:39 02/27/07 Tue [1]

[> [> [> [> OMG!!!!!! I DID IT!!!!! I called Verison and they said I was actually in the area now for a wireless broadband card. Sprint (who has my cell phone service) said I am just outside what they show as their service area, but suggested I get their card (free after rebate) and try it, 30 days to opt out. IT WORKS!!!! You don't even know how much better this is going to make things. Working already long hours and putting dial up in the mix on top of that is just unbearable! I'm SO excited!!! Thanks Carrotts and everyone else for their suggestions! I think (pray) I've made the right decision...inside -- sj...now on cloud nine, 22:07:18 02/27/07 Tue [1]

with this service I can take my laptop anywhere I can use my phone and access the internet high speed! I can use the blasted thing in my car between appointments now if I need to!!! Its supposed to be unlimited access too and was cheaper in both equipment and monthly fees. The tech support was great as well! Hope I stay this happy lol!

[> . I have Hughes net and aside from the fact that surfing is not as fast as cable (Im spoiled) its okay. D/L is slower than cable too, but lots faster than dialup. Once I got it working with my computer there was no problem but I found tech support non-existent. Very heavy storms slow the service but Ive had few complete outages, no more than cable. Theres another service called Clerewire(sp)Runs on cell phone lines. Ive heard its better than sattelite but you have to have excellent cell phone reception to get it. -- Karen, 18:52:50 02/27/07 Tue [1]

[> [> Thanks Karen. I think I've found an answer. I got a wireless broadband card from my cell provider and it seems to work great. After all I've read and experienced I'm very leary of the satellite. I hope it continues to work well for you! I found out this afternoon that the co. supposed to do the install of the sat. at my house on the 6th has already billed my credit card for the equipment and ordered the start of service. something I was told just yesterday wouldn't happen until the 6th. Now I have to try and get my money back! -- sj, 22:12:09 02/27/07 Tue [1]
