Subject: What do you wish computers could do that they're not doing right now?
I know this can never be done but I wish it anyway. Since I have three computers (doesn't everyone?) I wish I could copy an item on one computer and paste it into another computer.
I know, I know, I can put it on the network or email it to myself or burn it on a cd. Still wouldn't it be nice if there was a copy buffer in the sky?
What about you? What do you want?

Well, speaking as a person with 4 computers and 3 laptops in the house, and not all of them in working condition at the moment, yes it would be nice. We do have everything networked, but unless you have already gone over to the other computer, picked the target location, and shared it on the network, it can be a pain to copy things. And if the computers are on a wireless network, it can take twice as long as if both of them are wired in to the network. -- JAG Junkie (Ronda)--who has spent WAY too much time lately copying files from wacked out computers to still functioning computers, 17:26:51 02/13/07 Tue [1]

What do you call miscellaneous computer parts, because I am SURROUNDED by them. They are all over the computer room, all over the shelves, stuffed into closets...and those are just the parts we haven't thrown away yet. I'm sure that on the days we get rid of old parts, the garbage man must think we are involved in some sort of illegal activity! LOL -- JJ (Ronda)--I even have a wall clock I made from computer parts: the face is a disk from the inside of a hard drive, the numbers are pieces off of a circuit board., 20:02:25 02/13/07 Tue [1]

I meant "pieces off a motherboard". My computer nerd DH would laugh if he heard me call it a circuit board. LOL -- JJ (Ronda)--my collection of paperweights and coasters is quite interesting too., 20:04:22 02/13/07 Tue [1]

LOL at boat anchors! We have two very expensive boat anchors right now, neither of which were very old. We have had more computer parts go bad in just the last year than in the previous few years combined. I think it's a conspiracy against people who build their own computers! LOL -- JJ (Ronda)--whose DH gave up and bought me a laptop and a docking station until he has time to tweak our boat anchors. LOL, 20:08:54 02/13/07 Tue [1]

Oo, I know. I wish there was a way to go back to an earlier version of Internet Explorer. I hardly ever use IE, but occassionally I come across websites that only work in IE. But I absolutely HATE IE 7.0. Nothing looks the way it should, I can't find anything, and I can't manuever around in it the way I would prefer. Now I only use it as a last resort. -- JJ (Ronda), 03:24:39 02/14/07 Wed [1]

You can uninstall it. Should be able to go into Add/Remove Programs and remove it. Still trying to get used to it myself. -- Hope, 04:16:03 02/14/07 Wed [1]

Sure I can uninstall it, but then how do I install the old version? The new version is part of Windows updates, so I can't avoid getting upgraded without turning off Windows updates, which I don't want to do. I just avoid using it altogether. -- JJ (Ronda), 05:00:44 02/14/07 Wed [1]

I would assume when you uninstall it should take you back to 6. I can't see Microsoft giving the option of uinstall and then leaving someone with IE. -- Hope, 06:31:11 02/14/07 Wed [1]

There are a couple websites that have old versions on them. OldVersions.com and OldApps.com I have done this before. BTW, Microsoft doesn't want you to go back. When it comes out with a new program, the older one is usually no longer for sale or available. And exception is VB6 since it's so different from VB.net. -- judi, 10:05:03 02/14/07 Wed [1]

I wish Outlook and Outlook Express didn't hate each other. I wish my mouse had a little finger-warmer hood (my right fingers get so cold sitting on that thing!) - you know, like one of those finger-nail-dryer machines that would blow warm air on my frosty digits! I wish there was an option to have all the plugs and stuff on the SIDE (instead of in the back) of the tower. I wish my computer dispensed coffee and Hershey Kisses upon demand. -- The Chief (not very technical wishes, but there they are), 13:37:32 02/14/07 Wed [1]

I so agree about the icy fingers! I have a laptop, and I've actually worked with gloves from time to time, because my fingertips get so cold. Of course *then*, you can't work the touchpad! Sheesh! So the laptop's filters blow out hot air all the freakin' time; why can't it be blown in the direction of my fingers instead of out the back?? -- Colie, 15:42:50 02/14/07 Wed [1]

I only have 2 old computers but I find my jumpdrive works well to transfer stuff as does Yahoo Notepad. I love the way I have my bookmarks set up on my laptop and I wish I could just transfer that over to the desktop and not have to take the time to reorganize all of them again on the desktop. -- Sarahsue, 16:34:43 02/14/07 Wed [1]

I can't live without my jumpdrive! It just doesn't work when you are transferring really big stuff (like a folder full of video files). BTW--I have moved my bookmarks all over the place. Inside -- JAG Junkie (Ronda)--I can't live without my bookmarks either!, 17:05:38 02/14/07 Wed [1]
I use Netscape and Mozilla (and sometimes Internet Explorer). All of them have a way to export and import your bookmarks. I keep my exported bookmarks file in "My Documents" and on my jumpdrive so I can easily import it to whatever spare computer I am forced to use. I also have emailed my bookmarks file to my yahoo email so that I can access them anywhere even without my jumpdrive (like when I'm at work). Tell me which browser you are using and I'll tell you how to do it if you need me to.

I may have spoken too generally. Inside -- JJ (Ronda), 17:43:01 02/14/07 Wed [1]
If you organized your bookmarks in Netscape or Mozilla and are exporting and importing to another Netscape or Mozilla, then everything should work fine (since Netscape is really just a jazzed up version of Mozilla). However, if your bookmarks are from Netscape or Mozilla, and you are importing them into Internet Explorer, it will try to alphabetize them and mess them up from the way you had them organized. And IE doesn't like "&" symbols on bookmark imports from N or M either.
And if you are using the newest version of IE, I'm not sure how to even import your bookmarks. It doesn't work at all the way old IE did, and I gave up before I got to the importing bookmarks part (see my rant above).
The reason (actually, one of many) that I prefer Netscape and Mozilla is the Personal Bookmarks Toolbar feature. If your bookmarks are organized into folders, you can copy them in a personal bookmarks folder and then all your folders will appear across the top of the page. It's like each bookmark folder is a drop down menu. You can't get any easier than that!

I use Firefox almost exclusively. I do have way more bookmarks on my desktop and I'm pretty sure the laptop's bookmarks are all bookmarked on my desktop already. It's just the organization of them! I share the desktop with others so I try and hide some of the bookmarks so the others don't click on them. It's just lazyness in not putting in the line dividers and re-organizing them. -- Sarahsue, 16:58:45 02/15/07 Thu [1]

You can export them from Firefox and they will stay organized the same way. Just go to Bookmarks, then Organize Bookmarks. Once it opens up, go to File, then export. Wherever you export them to, they will stay in the same order as the way you have them in Firefox. -- JJ (Ronda), 19:11:10 02/15/07 Thu [1]
