Church to Daschle: You're No Catholic

Pro-abortion Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle may no longer call himself a Catholic. So reports the Weekly Standard, which says Daschle, the highest-ranking Democrat in Washington, has been sent a letter by his home diocese of Sioux Falls, S.D., directing him to remove from his congressional biography and campaign documents all references to his standing as a member of the Catholic Church.

The magazine's Web site reports today, "This isn't exactly excommunication - which is unnecessary, in any case, since Daschle made himself ineligible for communion almost 20 years ago with his divorce and remarriage to a Washington lobbyist," the high-powered and controversial Linda Daschle.

The directive from Sioux Falls Bishop Robert Carlson is a declaration that Daschle's religious identification constitutes "a grave public scandal," the Standard says.

In 1997, Bishop Carlson publicly said Daschle's phony, hole-filled "compromise" on partial-birth abortion, allowing the mother to make any claim of mental or physical health as a reason for such a gruesome late-term abortion, was a "smokescreen" designed solely to "provide cover for pro-abortion senators and President Clinton, who wanted to avoid a veto confrontation."

Daschle fought back on the floor of the Senate by denouncing his own bishop for speaking in a way "more identified with the radical right than with thoughtful religious leadership," the Standard reports.

Bishop Carlson later told the Sioux Falls Argus Leader that he remained mystified by Daschle's position on abortion. "NARAL claims him as one of their number-one supporters. I don't understand how he can be in touch with South Dakotans as much as he is, and yet consistently have a pro-abortion record."

South Dakota's Catholic bishop is not the first is America to finally tell allegedly Catholic politicians to stop their hypocrisy. Sacramento Bishop William Weigand has told California Gov. Gray Davis to renounce his support of abortion or stop taking Holy Communion.

[> What I find ironic about TD is the character he's revealing in all these public political squabbles since GWB entered the White House. His allies were saying he's always been such a quiet and mild-mannered sort, so his flying off the handle now is deemed credible evidence of how wrong the right is. How about this: he's finally revealing his true colors, now that he's not getting his way all the time like Bubba let him? I have yet to hear a liberal not sound like a spoiled brat having a temper tantrum. Can anyone show me otherwise? -- Spock, 11:34:06 04/18/03 Fri (user-vc8fm1s.biz.mindspring.com/216.135.216.60)
