Subject: Snow vent

Sorry to show up only to vent, but....

WHAT IS PHILADELPHIA'S PROBLEM WITH SNOW REMOVAL?!!!

I have never lived anywhere that was so bass-ackwards in (lack-of) snow removal. OK, so they say they're spending tons of money to remove tons of snow. Just where, exactly, is this money being spent? On hot chocolate and donuts and/or pizza for the road crews? On analysis reports that say, yup, there's a lot of snow out there?

Sure, I've seen Streets Dept. vehicles out and about....doing nothing more than driving around and acknowledging, yup, there's a lot of snow that needs to be removed. In fact, as I trudged down a one-way street (because the sidewalks were impassable) on foot yesterday, a Streets Jeep came up behind me, driving the wrong way, and the guy actually rolled down his window and advised me to be careful. And when I advised him he was driving down the wrong way on a one-way street, he said, "We're just checking out the streets." This is such a great use of my taxpayer dollars, I can't even tell you. Really -- it's not printable.

I've seen lots of city plow trucks merely driving -- not plowing -- down streets that desperately need plowing. And I've seen the same kind of trucks needlessly re-"plowing" streets that are very clear already.

I work in Manayunk -- it ain't pretty there, folks. Can't find parking anywhere but places you have to pay to park in, and there are only about three streets that are actually safely navigable by car. The rest is a cross-country ski expedition.

Who's in charge of this operation? Some company that manufactures shovels and toboggans? How about, at the very least, every plow truck out there actually drop your plows and start PLOWING, huh?

[> Spock, I cannot get the image presented by the news media, of hundreds of thousands of anti-United States demonstrators, who refer to themselves as anti-war demonstrators, standing up for Saddam Hussein, Iraq, terrorists, communists, anti-Israel and anti-Jew rhetoric and propaganda, anti-Bush and anti-Blair propaganda. Then I see what takes place here at home and no one organizes a demonstration! No one! Where is the protest? Why are the taxpayers not blocking Broad Street from City Hall to the Naval Yard to the South, and from City Hall to Temple University to the North -- William, 21:57:03 02/19/03 Wed (cache-rl02.proxy.aol.com/152.163.189.98)

[> and City Hall to 30th Street Station to the West and City Hall to the Delaware River to the east? Why not demonstration? Where is the outrage? Why the inbalance? Why are people out demonizing my country and our president and not the tyrant, Saddam Hussein, while doing nothing like those anti-US demonstrations when it comes to getting their paid for services such as having a plow actually DROP their plow when they go down a street and plow something? It makes no sense. Are all citizens brain dead? -- William, 21:59:43 02/19/03 Wed (cache-rl02.proxy.aol.com/152.163.189.98)

[> I am very surprised that there was a problem on Monday. Even the local news reported that since it was a PennDOT holiday their drivers were 'on overtime'. You know where I live and we first carted out our snow to 'stationing' areas. Then it headed for the reservoirs, etc. There is still more of it here than we'd like to see. However, alot of our guys helped work WITH our town. This might be an unknown phenomenon in da city. Sorry for you. -- JL : (, 22:50:33 02/20/03 Thu (pcp01376707pcs.selrsv01.pa.comcast.net/68.80.69.241)

[> [> Filthydelphia is just plain stoopid, I guess. I still keep seeing plow trucks, often 2 in tandem, just DRIVING around. If I could see evidence that at least they were driving to areas that need plowing and actually PLOWING, that would be one thing, and we'd gradually see new streets cleared every day. If they're not removing snow, then what, exactly, are they spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on every day? To pay guys overtime to just drive around in their big rigs? -- Spock ("Grrr...Argh," to quote Mutant Enemy Productions), 15:20:54 02/21/03 Fri (user-vc8fm1s.biz.mindspring.com/216.135.216.60)

[> [> [> I guess they figured 'why do any real work...let's just collect our coin and let God melt it on Saturday'. Half of ours is gone about now ... even the huge piles at the dead ends are much smaller. Hope things are better for you come Monday. -- JL, 13:21:41 02/22/03 Sat (pcp01376707pcs.selrsv01.pa.comcast.net/68.80.69.241)
