**The Flying Squirrel Message Board**
	My name is Jill and I created this board in 1997 when I got my flying squirrel Charlie. He was such a wonderful pet. You can learn a lot about flying squirrels on this message board by posting your questions and going through the archives. Please keep to the subject. I need help. My flyer (Roxy) is doing very bad. I've had her for a year and a half. A friend found her, as a baby, in a dog's mouth. The friend gave her to me to rehabilitate. She did survive, but she has never matured--She still looks like a baby. She's small, has a young face, and isn't flying (nor has she ever seemed strong enough to do so). At first I thought that maybe she was runt, but she keeps getting weaker. She is now very frail, staggering when she walks, and losing hair all over. I started to supply Roxy with a lot of vitamin and calcium supplements, that get mixed in with her food. She doesn't like the taste of the supplements in her food, so she won't eat. I don't know what to do. I live in New Hampshire and I can't find a flying squirrel vet anywhere. Does anyone have any idea what could be happening? I need help please! I love my flyer and I don't want to lose her.

Thanks for the input, but It's not yawning and stretching like that. He's doing it constantly in him cage and falls over while doing it. almost like he passes out and catches himself before going out completely. Almost like he's narcaleptic.
Also how fast do they grow? He doesnt seem any larger from 2 weeks ago. It might be me.

Can any one tell me what the best cages are for a fs? I dont want him out unless I am there to supervise. I see everyone seems to have wire cages like bird cages but, if they can squeeze through cracks easily then what size bird or other cage can I get? Or should I build one? I want to be sure he is comfortable, able to climb, and safe as well. He cant have the run of the room at free will unless attended because I cant trust that my dogs wont sneak in always when we enter. Not that they will hurt or even care that he's there. But to be on the safe side...

when i found the baby squirel i found it at my school. i took it to the vet they told me it was a day old so she gave me some numbers and i called them and they are going to thelp it get back into shape because it hasnt eatin from it mommy in a few hours. but she said that she would give it back and i get to keep it.

Hey all,
He's eatting on his own! Not drinking though. His nose gets in the way and he ends up inhaling it. I may need to give him a water bottle. I still need to feed him several times a day because he wont take more than 1cc of formula and because he isnt drinking on his own yet it's the only form of liquid he gets. But he spent most of the night and morning chewing and eatting nuts and fruits.
Is there any food he cant have? And do these guys squeeze through places like a mouse can? Do I need to worry about the under side of doors or small holes? I have a small hole in my radiator that is plugged with steel wool. I dont want to loose him. I have 2 Mini pinchers that would love to be unattended with him.

My fs is about 4 mabey 5 weeks old and I feed him every 2 to3 hours when he requests food. He eats well about 3/4 to 1cc at a time and urinates very well always. He also deficates a good amount as well. But he seems to be dehydrated all the time. To the point I need to give him subqutaneous fluids. Why is he having such a hard time holding fluids? Is he not recieving enough food? He also seems to over heat when I have the heating pad on so, I turn it off then he gets cold. Should I leave it on anyway? Its about 75 degrees in the room I have him in now.

I hear that people buy and own flying squirrels but how many own them on Long Island? Are they legal? I'd rather keep mine because he has a better chance at a longer life with me but if I need to set him free I need to find a family to set him free with. If I do keep him do I need to get him a companion? Do they need to live in groups? If so where would I get another?

Can a flying squirrel live on suger glider food as a main diet? and is the vitamins for a small animal ( hamsters and gerbils) sufficient for vitamins or should I give another source? My flyer is aprox. 3-4 weeks and I've never had one before. I've raised a squirrel before but, it's been years. HELP!!

Thanks. That helped. I evaluated her when she settled down and figure she's a well nourished, relatively well hydrated mostly adult female. Her only problem appears to be eye infections. No trauma seen. I cleaned her up and put terramycin opth in her eyes. She showed enough spunk to bite me on the finger before she went back to the seeds. Thanks for the typhus update. She doesn't appear to be systemically ill, but I'm always worried about rabies in general. General care is taken care of, but I worry about socialization. She is alone here and too feral (too old) to want my companionship. I put her in iso to keep her stress free (from my four legged friends). I hope to do a soft release when her eyes clear. I question visual ability in one of them. But maybe noctournals don't see well during the day. I don't know. How is the eyesight on yours?

I have a young flyer up here in Rhode Island. All info found specifies "Southern Flyer". Has anyone kept a northern squirrel as a pet? I'm looking for specifics on aging him, diseases, diet, behavior. How well do they see in the daytime? He doesn't appear to have very good vision right now but no injuries, good appetite. I've done lots of rehab before (past licensed for that and active as an RN) but most stuff up here is for gray squirrels. I'd like to rehab and set free unless there's a reason not to. I think this one is big enough to be weaned but will need age info to make sure.

I have a question for someone out there who can answer it for me. I have a female fs. I've had for almost a year. She's a great little girl.

My question is. I have noticed that some of her hair is coming off her little tail. I need to know what I need to get. If there some medicine that I can get from my vet please, let me know.

I cant take her to the vet because she would most likely run away and I just cant take the chance. If there is something (meds) that you know works perhaps the vet will just sell it to me.

I appreciate any advice that you can give me.

Beverly I read a pre post that you wrote on bonding. You said that if an adult flyer won't let you scoop them up it could be ill. Please explain a little more for me? Froto don't like to be scooped up and comes out on his terms most of the time. He will let me pet him in his nest box and when i get him out he stays on us. He is not very social. It seems that your flyer has dysentery. This is not all too uncommon for flyers to receive. Common symptoms are irritable attitudes, obsessive sleeping, and constant defecation through out the day. Her constant defecation on you may make you angry don't take it as an insult. Your concern should be when she starts to throw feces at you. I am a breeder of flyers and I have seen many wars where small squirrel feces were being thrown all over the place. This causes for a major concern.
I have a small theory of why these flyers start these feces wars. I think it may be because they see their owner or someone else have sex on a daily basis. Especially if the owner is the one being dominated in the bedroom. This can be very traumatic for your little flyer. Not only will flyer resort to random violence, but they will also explore their own sexuality. Females will constantly lick their vaginas, as for male they will grasps their penis and jack off repeatedly throughout the day. These flyers may masturbate for hours at a time. It gets pretty gross at times.
So the next time you engage in sex I would advise you to keep your flyer away for the safety of your squirrel and your man's penis.

I obtain two darling 3 month old gliders a few days ago, but theyre very different from what I read about on the internet. They make no noise at night, are more active during the day, They don't seem too interested in eachother and are they suppose to make bubble popping noises when they sleep? @_@ I'm so confused.

i read your message boards all the time..please give me some help/information

i came back from vacation two days ago and i had someone watching my little girl flyer shes 4yrs old. when i came home she seemed to be fine but last night i went in to feed her and she seemed very sick, her eyes were slighty open and she was moving slow. i fed her grapes and broccoli and she ate quite a lot of it actually. then i gave her water in a little cap and she drank atleast two capfulls. for my cage i have been using a water bottle with the ball in it. i was worrying all night, i was afraid it was the vitamins but i give them to her all the time the dry vitamins in her food and i also use the drops. after about 10mins of when i fed her she starting gagging and she threw up. i comforted her and kept her in my robe and talked to her. i gave her a little more water and she went to sleep in my shirt. i sat on the floor with her in my shirt and petted her for a few hrs...her eyes seemed to get better later on last night. i fell asleep and woke up about an hour ago. she was missing and i looked around the room and she was sleeping in a pile of towels on the dresser. she seemed to be doing a lot better, she was climbing around and having a good time, she looked so much better. i was really worried. i fed her this morning some cut up apples she only took a peice or two and she went to the cage and ate some dry seed. im going to continue feeding her and giving her water frequently and checking up on her. i think its the water bottle, it would be a lot of help if you could give me some answers i will totally appreciate it. feel free to email me tlowman495@juno.com

Just curious. I know the general consensus is that they are very clean, but mine has a habit of taking bites out of everything I eat, especially popsicles. Everytime I get a popsicle out, he pretty much sits on my arm or clings to the stick and eats half of it. I know it's because it's one of his favorites because I buy all natural strawberry fruit bars and my squirrel loves strawberries. Anyway, after he did this a couple of times, I decided I wouldn't throw away a whole popsicle just because he had taken a few bites out of it.

So now I just share what I've got with him as long as it's not chocolate.

My 'Lucky' babies are looking for new homes -- Judy C., Thursday, June 24, 12:32:02pm

Well, my three 'Lucky' pups are getting all grown up now - at least, that's what they would like to have you believe! I have two girls and a boy, they're 5 1/2 weeks old now, and starting to eat solid foods - love those apples! One of the females has a shorter tail than the others - I suspect it was bitten off in the snake episode, probably when the mother was so frantically moving them. They're all healthy and tame and sweet as sugar.
I am in southeast Texas, down near Beaumont, and do not ship, but can arrange to meet you somewhere if it's not too far away.

Bella is 9 months old and was raised by hand from six weeks. She's playful and affectionate and likes people.

Unfortunately, I am facing a high-risk pregnancy and I'll be moving in with parents-in-law until I deliver. They enjoy Bella as a visitor to their house, but having her live there is unworkable.
I'd like to find someone in the Cleveland, Ohio area who would like to meet Bella and consider providing her a new home.

I recently bought an 8-10 month Southern Flying Squirrel. He is sexually mature, I know this because of his full-size testicles. We get along great he lets me pet him, however he will not let me scoop him up with out him biting me. I need to know that dispite his age will I be able to bond with him using the "bonding" method (shirt pocket), or if there are any other ways I can help bond with my new found friend.
