The Flying Squirrel Message Board

My name is Jill and I created this board in 1997 when I got my flying squirrel Charlie. He was such a wonderful pet. You can learn a lot about flying squirrels on this message board by posting your questions and going through the archives. Please keep to the subject.   i recently got a flyer about 2 weeks ago. i am already having problems he is ablsolutely terrified of me. i have to pick him up with a glove and force him in his pouch.he runs away when i see him.i already love him and feel i made a mistake with him.wenever i open his cage he tries to run out please help!!!

  I need help. My new puppy is now with me a little over 2 weeks. I would say he is about 8 weeks or so. He is not like my last squirrel nor is he like the other squirrels I read about. He was handfed and I got him from a very reputable breeder.
  
  He does not like to come out of his bonding pouch or his sleeping bag, ever. I carried him in my shirt pocket for a while, he liked it. Now he wont except anywhere but his sleeping pouch in his cage. I recently gave him a bigger cage. He will not come out of the pouch for anything now, including food. I have to pull him out against his will to feed him. Now he will only take a few sips of food before running for dear life off of me looking for cover. He will not play anymore, only look for cover. What should I do?
  
  I work during the day so I only have a few hours at night to play with him, and he wants nothing to do with me. My last squirrel from the day I got him was almost in separable.
  
  I have been building a cage for him, a huge one. I am spending multi-hundreds of dollars on the cage. I have not finished it yet and I am tempted to stop working on it for a bit and not putting any more cash into it because he doesn’t seem to utilize any space bigger than his small sleeping pouch.
  
  He will play a bit if I stick my fingers in the pouch, but I don’t like doing that because he is biting a little. I know he is just playing but I do not want him to learn to bite.
  
  Help!!! I am loosing patients and I really want to be friends with him.

  Last year Beverly sent me this information on how to feed a pup. I found the information helpful and she told me I could post it on the forums.
  
  I buy the Esbilac powder. I mix it with one part Pedialyte and one part warm water to one part powder (mix the powder with the warm (hot from the tap) water, then add the Esbilac). I use either an eyedropper or a plastic syringe.
  
  I hold the pup in my left hand, with it's back against my palm, and its belly & hands & head resting on my fingers. The do squirm a bit, and you have to hold loosely, but keeping the thumb snug against the index finger, so the pups shoulders cannot 'escape' your palm.
  
  Just squeeze a droplet of the formula on to the cleft in the pup's muzzle. Try to avoid the nostrils. I also usually put a piece of toilet tissue under the pup, so I don't drench them in formula. The pups are usually pretty good about sucking in the droplet, but if yours is resistant, just keep trying. As a droplet is sucked in, add another right behind it. Most pups will suck up about 5 drops, before needing a 'breather' moment.
  
  Even if you only manage a drop or two swallowed, that's better than nothing. Carry the pup in your shirt, and try again in about an hour. I generally try every hour, for the first day, until the pup seems to have the idea. Now and then, you'll get bit, but at the infant stage, they don't often have much of a bite, and it's more like being pinched.

  I have a 3 year old flyer (Peepers) and wanted her to have a buddy, so I got Pixie in December. She is now 3 months old. They will "sing" to each other, but there is no friendly contact! Peepers is always chasing Pixie out of the "squirrel room", and when I'm around Pixie gets chased off of me! I'm not sure what a "war dance" looks like, but I have the scars to know they are real! I worry that they will never get along. Did I wait too long to get another flyer? Or am I just in too big of a hurry for them to be friends? Also what is the "sining" all about? It sounds real pretty , but I think it's squirrel swearing!

  I discovered my little 4yr old flyer in the toliet yesterday. I spent the whole rest of my night heartbroken over the incident. ive always kept her in my room along with her cage. for a while i had been leaving her cage door open so she can come and go around my room as she pleases. well after the incident yesterday i realized she had been being really sneaky to be climbing under the door of my room and running around the house. who knows how long this had been going on, but im starting to get better about it...the memories are in my heart.

  I know alot about the Prevost's squirrel and I get really mad when people come here with false information.Prevost's squirrels cost about 500 dollars. When a Prevost's squirrel has a baby it has Only 1-4 a liter. So they are vey hard to fond. Honolulu zoo has a very good price check it out there see ya!!!

  I sadly announce the tragic passing of my youngest flyer, Avellana. I found her on the bottom of the cage, with a bite wound on her head and a bloody mess, indicating it was murder. She was caged with Plumeria and Caramel. I knew that Plumeria sometimes didn't get along with Avellana, but I never expected this. She was 8 months old and the daughter of Scalisti and Rakita. I called her the Princess more often than her name. She will be sorely missed. :-(

• Help with new 8 month old flying Squirrel -- Brent, Thursday, December 09, 01:53:35pm
  I just bought a fs that is about 8 month old. I have had him for 3 or 4 days now. Everythime i stick my hand into the caage he flips out, runs all over the cage, then into his cubical bed at the top of the cage. My question is this... did i buy him from the pet store too late to really tame him or is it just going to take some time for hime to calm down and get to like me? I am currently carrying him in a bonding pouch for a few hours each day whenever i can get him out of the cage. Any suggestions on how to tame an older fs would be greatly appreciated.

  He finally dropped!!!! He's definatly a male. We were getting worried for a bit there. He's also filled out some and actually looks like a male fs now. He's very healthy too!! I am still looking for another fs for him to have a friend so if anyone is looking for a home for one (pref. a male ) PLEASE LET ME KNOW ! I am despirate to find wingnut a friend to rufhouse with.   Just thought I would share some of the things my flier enjoys to eat that are healthy and good sources of calcium. I have a freshwater aquarium with a slightly problomatic snail population. My hedgehog likes to eat worms and slugs, so I gave her some snails to try. She loved crunching on them! Since there were so many little snails , I offered a few to my flier and he ate the snail plus some of the shell. I know wild fliers eat bird eggs, so I gave him an infertile parakeet egg (I know it sounds bad, but the bird didn't want anything to do with them) and he ate the whole thine, shell and all. He also will eat chicken egg shells and he gnaws on some deer bones I found in the woods. The bones had already been chewed by some other rodents, so I figured they were good ones! Any other strant food items fliers like?

  Good morning! hope some one can help me out. I woke up at 1:00am from something falling from the ceiling. GUESS WHAT IT WAS? YES a flying squirrel. I didnt realize they were so popular till i got on the web sight.do they bite?, what should i feed it? i have no idea how old it is.I dont even know how it got in the house.i do live in a wooded area.

  My cat brought in a live flying squirrel, seemingly unharmed. I fell in love with it. It's been snuggling in my shirt for the last four hours, without complaint, even while my cat slept in my lap. It's time for bed, and my boyfried has made it clear that he wants the squirrel to go back to it's outdoor home, and I figured that would be best anyway, but it won't leave! I brought it outside, but it just crawls back under my shirt! It's COLD outside! It's past 11PM here in Maine, and there will be frost tonight, our first of the year. I'd feel so heartless leaving my little buddy out in the cold, where it doesn't want to be, but I really have nothing to do for it inside with my two cats. I guess I know what I have to do, but it's so hard...

  we caught 4 baby flyers in our attic yesterday. we put them in a cage and gave them parrot seed and water also apple slices. they don't seem to be eating. they have their eyes open and are very acive. they are about 5 or 6 inches long. since i have never seem these little critters before i do need some help.

  Is it normal for a flyer to squeamish at abrupt sounds? If I make a smooch noise with my mouth it jumps. It also jumps at the sound of opening its cage, something falling to floor etc.

  My flyer has recently gained a lot of weight. I mean, in one week its very noticeable how much fatter its gotten.
  
  I haven't changed its feeding habits very much. I've actuall cut down on richer foods like pecans.
  
  Is it natural for it to put on weight for the winter or should I change its feeding habits?

  One day I was outside and I noticed my cat acting weird. I went over to it and noticed it was playing with something. At first I thought it was mouse but when pick it up I saw that is was something else. It was quite small (like 4-5 inches) i assumed it was a baby and fed it with a eye dropped and milk until it became strong and active again. When i got on the net i noticed it was flyer. Before I read that I already started to bond because it crawled under my shirt by its own accord.
  I think its a girl because I can't notice anything protruding in that area.
  Is it alright to give it bird vitamins in its water? (i keep its water in a bottle cap) because i read that their bones can be fragile if u dont give them vitamin d2.
  I give it acorns i gather from the yard, pecans, grapes, apple slices, little peices of cheese, and unsalted peanuts along with dried peas. Is this a pretty good diet?

• Ventilation question about cage -- Laryssa, Saturday, November 20, 12:08:42am
  Hi all! I haven't been on for quite a while, and I wanted some opinions.
  
  I am thinking about buying a cage from this magazine Cages By Design. My 3 flyers are in a bird cage right now - and they pee on the bars, of course..and it's impossible to clean. I have to take apart the whole cage and it takes forever...
  
  So...I was thinking about getting one of these. This is what they look like:
  
  And they have options for wire sides, or solid. I wanted solid so their pee can't get out the sides...but is that going to be too little of circulation? Does anyone here keep them in something so enclosed as an aquarium? It is pretty big...the one I'm looking at is 36"Tx36W" by 24"D.
  
  You can add vent strips to it but will I need to? I am just not sure.

  Please, if anyone is online and can help me tonight, I would very much appreciate your response. With further research on-line I have determined that the FS I found next to my cat Monday night is quite young, I am guessing maybe 7 or 8 weeks. He did have some neurological manifestations that seem to be lessening, but he was much more awake yesterday and had a much greater appetite. Even this morning he was able to hold his weight on his sternum without falling over like yesterday. Throughout this afternoon, however, he has pretty much stopped eating or drinking. He just lies on his side as if asleep. I am quite worried about this turn of events, particularly since I now know he is so young. I have purchased Pedialyte and Nutrical, and he will take them in very small amounts, but I need to know if there is anything else I can do. Since x-rays and vet examinations have not found any obvious injuries from my cat, could he be too young and fallen from a tree and sustained a head injury? How quickly should he bounce back if I just haven't been feeding him the appropriate foods at this time (he would only take honey water and walnuts yesterday). I really want this little guy (Napoleon) to live. Can anyone give me advice????
