**The Flying Squirrel Message Board**
	My name is Jill and I created this board in 1997 when I got my flying squirrel Charlie. He was such a wonderful pet. You can learn a lot about flying squirrels on this message board by posting your questions and going through the archives. Please keep to the subject. Hello,
I just got a flying squirrel. It is about 8 weeks old. most people are saying that they are very friendly however mine isnt. It says in its nest box and when tried to be touch by my brother it bit him. Please let me know what i can do to "train it" or make him more friendly with me. THanks in advance.

I have 2 females and 1 male flyer. The male is 1 1/2 , one girl is 3 and the other just turned 1. They were all handfed babies but have not been handled for a while. They are still fairly tame and will let me pet them. Because of family obligations and other pets, I feel they should have a better home then what I can provide at this time. I am in Central Texas. Ricky (Zach) was one of Laurie's first rescues. He came to me from Casey through Bobbie. Ricky has settled in here just fine with Ripley. Although they are not sharing a cage yet they are having playtime together. While they are out they do enjoy checking out each others cages. Ripley is VERY impressed with Ricky's cage and is trying to talk him into "trading spaces".....Ha! Ricky is so sweet he went to a business meeting with me today and no one even knew he was around. He likes nothing better than to have his back rubbed and being hummed to.

My wife and I found a squirrel on our carport a few weeks ago. At first we thought it was a baby squirrel, but after we showed it to a few people, we have arrived at the fact that it is a flying squirrel.

We have been feeding him hamster food and peanuts and a little celery here and there and he's been eating like crazy. When we put out hand in to feed him, he usually climbs all over our hand, but when you try to hold him, he just wriggles away. He's getting better, but he still doesn't seem to keen on the idea of being held. He's very jumpy and the slightest movement appears to scare him, but he's starting to trust us.

I'm afraid we may have missed the bonding period with him and I just want to know where you veteran squirrel owners would go from here. Should we just take him and hold him anyway? Will he get upset? I read all this about putting them in your pocket, but I'd be afraid to do that right now for fear that he would hop out and run away.

Anyway, having no idea how old he is, we really don't know what to do next. It would be really neat if we could keep him as a pet, but can we still bond with him?

Katie here was kind enough to send me this url after I asked her a question. (If you haven't checked out her Glider vs Squirrel site, do it now, it's great!) I'd like to know if anyone out there has had a male SFS neutered. I'd like to have this done, as I'd like to get Talisman a companion but do not want to have them breeding. Some of my questions are, what is the safest anaesthetic to use, what is the post-operative care like, etc. Any information you could provide will be greatly appreciated!

I've just found a book - Wild Heritage by Sally Carrighar, published back in the 60's - that has a few pages about flyers, and some great drawings of them. The info is nothing that will help you with the care of your flyers - just a beautifully descriptive bit about their gliding and playing. The entire book is fascinating - it's about "animal behavior in relation to human behavior". The book is very inexpensive. There are several on eBay, and probably - tho I have not checked - on half.com as well.

I believe all three of Scalisti's wives may be pregnant, and due in less than a week. Plumeria, Orchid, and Rakita are all really plump. Pictures soon! I didn't realize Scalisti has been that busy, but I really can't wait for the little miracles to be born!

Also, I got two new flyers, Caramel and Nibbles. I'm trying to introduce Nibbles (the female) to Scalisti, because she won't get along with Caramel, and Scalisti has more experience with feisty ladies. Caramel, on the other hand, is going to wait for his new girlfriend which is going to be the daughter of Scalisti and one of his ladies. Pictures of Caramel and Nibbles will also be posted soon!

I still have this female and one male that are ready for new homes, and Annie has at least three in the nest box, born 4-9-04. Way too early to handle them to see what sex! I've already ordered more Esbilac.

My Fox Squirrel babies are growing like weeds - boy! can they put away the food! They are as big as a grown grey squirrel now, and still growing. They have moved up to one of the outdoor cages - they had to have more room. Their new cage is 4' X 8' X 6' high. When they outgrow that, they should be old enough to release. (They better be - I'm not building anything bigger for a while!)

I was able to tell that both of Orchid's babies are boys. Rakita's is a girl, and I'm keeping this one. Orchid's last batch was 2 boys, so she gets the title "boy-maker." The odds that a female of any species, except for the armadillo, would have 4 boys and no girls is only 6.25% (1 in 16).

I need a little help...Iposted this else where to so sorry if it seems redondent. My sister-in-law's flying squirrel (I'm not sure which kind) just had babies and I was wondering if you could give me some advice to pass on. Such as: When should they be removed from mom? Should dad find his own cage for a while? Do they need anything special right now? How should they be weened? Do you have to bottle feed so they bond with humans? I'm sorry to bombard you with questions but I haven't been able to find much info on the internet to help us out. (and we'd really like to see these little guys or gals live) If you can offer any help it would be GREATLY appreciated!! Thanks So much!

OK, I thought it was funny when I puled my cell phone
out of my pocket and saw that Ripley had chewed the
antenne almost all of the way through.
But today, I took a nap on the couch with Ripley in my
bra (nothing unusual in that). O woke up and there
were these little pieces of rubber that I couldn't
figure out where they came from, until Jerry (hubby)
asked me to hand him the remote...........there are no
buttons let on it. I slowly backed out of the room
holding Ripley tight, getting the coldest stare I have
ever seen my hubby deliver. Finally through gritted
teeth he says, "And you want another one of those
things?"......Ripley and I are hiding in her room for
the evening........ROFLMAO!!!!!!!

Help! Petey, my 8 month old FS is chewing up my windows! I keep fresh limbs in her cage, but when she's out she chews my window sills and around the edge of the glass. I've tried the Bitter Apple spray, but she just chews right through it. Does anyone know of anything I can put on the wood that will repel her? Thanks.

Shadow's biological mom, Orchid, just had 2 babies this morning, and Rakita had 1 baby 2 days ago. Unfortunatly, Plumeria had a stillborn.

I know this isn't about flying squirrels, but it's about their cousins the gray and fox squirrels:

The state of Texas, which prides itself with what is believed to have excellent conservation practices, should not be so proud. From what I have been told about hunting, hunters help other animals from starvation by culling off some of their herd. This is not the case with squirrels, in fact it is the opposite. There is no closed season on squirrel hunting in the state of Texas, and that means baby squirrels are starving to death, a death far worse than a bullet. Sign here:

Can anyone tell me a list of safe foods for flyers? Maybe even favorites? And also branches I can find outside or order online, I hear some people do that. I need any suggestions. My little guy is doing great with a mixture of nuts and veggies but what else can I offer him? Are there vines or branches he might like to eat? What is NOT to be given? Hey y'all

I'm new to the board, and would like to get some advice.

I rescued 2 baby southern flyers about 1.5 years ago. Recently the male died unexpectedly, I suspect from the internal & head injuries he suffered when they fell from the nest. He'd had a history of seizures from the time I rescued him.

Since we lost him, the female has become withdrawn and shy. She is so sweet, and I feel so badly for her. I am torn as to what to do. I think I want to get another female companion, but am also considering adopting her to a family who has flyers and is very knowledgable.

What would you folks do? Any suggestions as to how to help her? I love her so dearly, and it breaks my heart that she misses her brother so much.

i have 3 male flyers and need a female badly. i don't care if it is older, a baby, and old breeder. my 1 male (Secret Squirrel) is extremely lonely and has started mock mating with adolph, and heinrich, much to their dismay. i live in rhode island and can not get a petshop to order me a female. they claim it is impossible, judy c.'s baby pics bummed me out bigtime. i will either pay shipping and squirrel cost or i can breed you a new gene pool female. all 3 males are unrelated and 1 female will do. from there i will give a baby female from 1st breeding to squirrel 2. then when she breeds i will give a female baby to squirrel # 3. this will start a new geen pool for me, and i will glady return the favor and send you as many females or males that you want. pleaseeeee help me. email me at Phaleg@cox.net with any ideas.

Fur loss in 12 yr old flying squirrell -- Paula from Texas, Wednesday, March 10, 02:42:17pm
My 12 yr old male flying squirrel has a bald spot that is gradually getting bigger and bigger. About an inch wide down his back & now the fur is coming off his tail. The skin looks healthy, no rash. Other than balding, he is fine, eats well, etc. He doesn't scratch, but it looks terrible. Any ideas as to cause and/or cure? Took him to a vet who thought he might be rubbing on his wooden nesting box where he sleeps in his cage, but he's had the same type box for 12 years and it's lined with soft fleece.

Cage redesign... Share! -- KJ, Friday, March 19, 08:09:01pm
Since we're doing this whole "spring cleaning" bit, I figured I might as well do a major overhaul of the squirrel cage. I plan to coax my fiance into helping me take the whole thing outside for a good scrub (while the kids cool their tails in the CritterTrail 2) ... and while we're at it, we're going to move some things around.

I haven't really added anything new in a while, just moved a couple things here and there. So far I've got their plastic nesting box (it's big! huge! really!) a little pouch that they don't use (so far as I know) ... a couple of big ol' natural branches (I forget what kind) ... a little manzanita branch clipped to the side of the cage, a water dish, a cuttlebone, and a large plastic corner dish that I've been feeding everybody off of.

I've got a Wodent Wheel from Nemo's days, and Shelley gave me another wheel I have yet to try (she said they didn't use the one she sent) ... and I picked up a pair of little jeans from a garage sale. I plan to foist it on my sister and see if she can sew off the legs and fix it up so it can be hung in the cage... somewhere! I haven't figured out where yet! LOL.

Lemme know what other toys your kids have to play with, both inside and out of their cage. I'm also rotating and adding to the play furniture in the rest of the room...

Oh, one more thing. What do you guys use for bedding material? I'm almost out of what I've been using so far, and wanted to know if there's something better.

2 year old Female Flyer in SC w/ cage & stand $150 OBO (by next week!!) -- ParkRangerSara, Friday, March 19, 01:12:20pm
I have received several messages but many of you are far away from South Carolina and I need to locate a home for my dad's flying squirrel by next weekend. Charlie is almost 2 years old, super healthy and lively. She would need some loving attention and time to adjust if being introduced to new flyers, but I would love for her to have a companion. Please email me a response since I keep forgetting to check back on this message board! The cage and stand she comes with can be seen on www.qualitycages.com she has the large top opening and front opening cage (i think it's listed under small animal cages or sugar glider cages) with the black stand on wheels. Very nice.. She also has a stash of foods and bedding and nest boxes and a wheel. All she needs now is a new home. Dad travels too much and cannot be with her as much as she needs the attention and my mom does not like many animals. I know this is short notice but hopefully we can work something out!! She cannot be shipped, she must be picked up in person!

CHARLIE NEEDS A NEW HOME (Part 2) -- Sara, Tuesday, March 16, 09:21:00am
Okay anyone who responded to my first post I will try to locate your email addresses again, but I got the approval from Dad to find Charlie a new home BEFORE MARCH 24!!! Charlie is a beautiful female flyer about 2 years old, very fiesty and loves to glide all over the place! She's bonded to my Dad mainly but jumps from person to person when we have guests over so I'm sure her new owner can bond with her with lots of love and attention. Please email me soon. She comes with two nest boxes, a large flyer cage with a front door and a top door and a pan, and the cage has a stand. The cage without the stand is 30 inches tall. My dad would like to sell her with the cage, so any offers and LOVING owners are welcomed please. We love our flyers, but Dad travels too much now and Charlie needs attention!

Hello,
First of all what is the difference between this message board and the Flying Squirrel Fancier. I just realized that there were two squirrel message sites. is this true?

I have a question on meal worms and protein. I know flyers can have them for protein but how many and how often should they be given?
