The Flying Squirrel Message Board

My name is Jill and I created this board in 1997 when I got my flying squirrel Charlie. He was such a wonderful pet. You can learn a lot about flying squirrels on this message board by posting your questions and going through the archives. Please keep to the subject. About Me: Since 1995 I have been breeding African Pygmy Hedgehogs (Jill's New England Hedgehogs) and produced a DVD Hedgehogs Unleashed. I have kept a number of odd pets over the years.   Hello, i met my friends FS today, fell in love and was lucky enough to get one from his friend that didnt want his anymore. Which i was more than happy to recieve. But the only thing is that it isnt a baby and i dont know how much attention this guy gave it.
  
  1) My question is what would be the best way to start bonding with it.
  
  2) What length of time will it take for it to want to chill with me.
  
  3) Are they relatively nice animals.

  I have a male flying squirrel and usually he is very playful, but the last two days he will not come out of his nest except to eat and drink water. When I try to pet him, he runs back inside his nest. This is strange because usually he can't wait to get out and play. This is my first Fs and I do not know much about handling one and playing with one. He was captured when he was two weeks old and the mother was killed. He is now four and 1/2 months old. He knows my voice and usually comes straight to me.

  My lovely Peanut just got her big girl cage in! The thing is huge....She's going to go crazy in it! I want to put some live branches in there for her to climb and chew on, but I am not sure what they like or don't like and what they can or can't have as far as trees go. • Update on 'Lucky' babies. -- Judy C., Saturday, June 12, 03:44:00pm
  The three 'Luckys' are doing fine. They're eating well, and today their eyes are opening. Although I have not been able to find any, they seem to have a flea or two. It is so funny - one will start scratching, and apparently hit a ticklish spot on the next, who will immediately join in the scratching, and, in turn, will hit the right spot on the third baby, who will join in. Then suddenly, everyone stops and falls asleep! You'd swear they had been practicing it. Could turn out to be the newest Flyer Olympic Sport - Synchronized Scratching.
  
  I'm going out to check the outdoor cage today, to see if I can figure out where that stinkin' snake got in. I can not imagine how he did it - it was a BIG snake - between 3 and 4 feet long - a chicken snake, if anyone is keeping score.
  Lace suggested keeping a goose in the cage to kill the snakes, but that's an awfully messy solution! And I can't just fence in around the cages to keep geese - they'd just fly out to get to the lakes. Geese just aren't very cooperative.

  I've had my flyer, Earl the Famous Flying Squirrel, for about 6 months. He's spoiled with treats and love, but I can't let him run around the house because we have 4 cats. I don't always get to spend a lot of time with him, and I'm worried that he's lonely.   A snake got into the Wild Bunch's cage and ate one of the flyers. I THINK I had 2 males and a female left in there, and I know the female had 3 babies. All 3 of the babies had been moved to a small box that had no bedding at all, and were still alive. (3 1/2 weeks) I found one male in a nest box and brought him inside. Went back and found a female hiding in a nestbox with a very small entrance hole, and brought her in. Now, I can't be positive there were two males and one female, but I think so. I can not tell for sure if the female I found has been nursing or not - at 90 mph who can tell? My husband has already disposed of the snake, and I don't know if I can find it or not, so that I could cut it open and maybe still tell something about the dead squirrel.
  
  What do I do? Should I put her in with the babies and watch to make sure she doesn't hurt them? Or put them next to each other and see if she goes crazy trying to get to them? She is in a cage, and the babies are in a plastic small pet carrier - hamster type. I've got Esbilac, so that's no problem. Please someone give me some suggestions!
  
  By the way, the babies are two girls and a boy.

  I could also use any advice you could provide a new "dad", in regards to dealing with his new "little one", bonding, feeding, all the basics.... I have done a lot of reeading, but just in case I missed something...
  
  Oh, and are there any "typical" squirrel names? For example "MAX" is the most common dog name..... I need to find a good unique one form my new guy....

  Blossom's second pup died the day before yesterday. We were so excited when she had her first litter of three pups. The one that's left is the healthiest. Beverly gave me good instructions for feeding the pups myself. Next litter I plan on having a nursing kit available. I feel bad as we already had the pups promised to adoptive homes.

  Hi, my name is Kelly and I have had a southern flying squirrel since Oct 2003. He is doing very well. I have a puzzling question. He loves my kids and seems to like my husband, but on 3 occasions he has jumped onto my husband then suddenly bite him. Twice was in the facial area which my husband had a mustache and a small beard. And once the first time was on the hand. I will have him out to play in the evening and if he sees my husband he want to jump on him. Of course now my husband does not want to handle him at.   I found a hurt grey in the road this morning. Do any of you know of a rescue that will take him in? I think he needs more than I can give him, I hate to say it but it might be one of the ones I raised and released last year. I picked him up and he made no attempt to bite me.

  In the last couple of box checks on the pups we could see two of the three were behind in development. I wasn't surprised that the smallest one died. The first one is doing well and is the size and development that you would expect for 5 weeks. The second one might not make it either. We'll never know the reason as I've fed Blossom the same foods I have all along. She uses her calcium block and I put the L & M vitamins in her water just as I've always done. This was sad as I had homes for all three. Two of the people might have to wait for another litter.

  Well, almost any other time, I'd speak right out with the utmost confidence and say that I have four beautiful baby boys for sale. But considering the 'gender confusion' reported lately on the boards, I'm not about to stick my neck out! There are definitely four of them - they are definitely beautiful - and they definitely appear to be boys, but I'm not guaranteeing anything :-)
  They are captive bred, hand raised, and ready to go. I will not ship, so you'll have to pick them up. I'm right on the TX/LA border, north of Beaumont. Email me if you're interested.

  Does anyone know any good techniques on taming squirrels? I caught one.....but he won't stop freaking out. help. I need to use for a biology experiment but he prolly should be tamed somewhat. I'm thinking of putting him into a larger cage with sticks and stuff. Any Ideas?

  Hi! I have a question: I think that one of my mom's flyers might be pregnant. Unfortunately, I do not live with my mom so I can't observe. But I was wondering just in case, should my mom separate the male and female (have them in separate cages) or is it ok for them to be in the same cage but have different nesting boxes? The cage they share is about 3 by 3.5 feet. I was reading the threads and I don't want anything tragic to happen. I told my mom to keep them in separate cages for now, but I wanted to see what you all thought. Since my mom does not have an extra cage large enough (she has a much smaller extra one, it's pretty much a bird cage), I would take the little guy home with me to babysit. Also, any other advice on pregnant flyers or how to tell? She "looks" pregnant, but she could just be chubby.
