It's a vexing question Kat, I have no doubt that KV62 was not originally meant for Tutankhamun, the shrine took up all of the space in the burial chamber, leaving only a two foot clearance between it and the side walls. The top of the Shrine virtually reaches the ceiling. So, we can confidentally say, the buriel in KV62 was a quick fix for an untimely death.

A West valley tomb for Tutakhamun makes sense, as we know, he referred to Amunhotep III as his father on numerous monuments. Of course the term, ' father ' was used to indicate a relationship with an ancestor and doesn't necessarily mean a literal ' father'.

So, being buried near Amunhotep III would make sense for Tutankhamun's buriel.
