My most memorable character was my Gram, She was somewhat like Grandma Esther, in that she was feisty and tart tongued. She also resembled Esther in her strength, and the fact that I still feel her love surrounding me like a warm quilt...35 years after she left us. For some reason, Gram never wanted to talk much about the past.. so I pieced these stories together from my mom and her cousins. Gram was the first woman in her town to register to vote, and also the first to bob her hair and get a permanent wave. During the Depression, while visiting her friends at the local Deli. She noticed that business was down, and suggested that the Jewish owners tap into a customer base that they'd never thought of. Their Catholic neighbors were looking for something cheap and filling to eat on Fridays. Gram gave the Krasners her recipe for Boston clam chowder, and brought in two Irish girls to prepare it. It all worked out wonderfully. The Deli got more business, the girls got jobs and a good meal. The Krasners were able to keep Kosher, and my Gram got a discount on groceries.

I still have the recipe for that chowder, and the old wooden spoon she used so well.

Growing up in a time when women were either mothers or "Old Maids", This bright, politically saavy woman always wanted to "Be Somebody".

I'm happy that she knows now, just how much of a SOMEBODY she really was.

"...use the brains God gave you; help your neighbors; if something needs doing, get out there and do it; and fight for what you believe in..."

I love you, Gram...

Joy
