Earl Hamner has remarked on several occasions that his family was more fortunate than many due to the fact that they had a garden to grow vegetables in, and they raised and slaughtered a pig each year. His father also hunted off the land and game would have been relatively plentiful in that area. So I don't think it's unusual that they had a lot of food. Also, unless you come from a BIG family, I think seeing that table full of food IS an eye opener. Most of us are more accustomed to seeing enough food for a much smaller family. Also, remember, they NEVER ate out...that wasn't really even a possibility.
