What amazes me is the abundance of food for that huge family during the depression. My Mother speaks of how often a cold biscuit is what she had for lunch at school. Wrapped in a paper bag. Of course my Grandmother practically raised all ten of hers by herself since my grandpa left them and she didn't live in the country where she could grow a large garden, own cows or chickens. There were no collectables at all. But as a child I do recall my Grandmother in her later years collected little nic-nacs that each of her children would buy her throughout the years, assuring she had nice things. I recall vividly, anything she had behnd glass, in a curio cabinet, I longed to get my hands on it. I was only allowed to look and not touch--that drove me nuts. (which explains why I am this way today) :-)
