Catie, while you were teaching, did you find that bad spellers were always bad spellers? That they never really improved much?

I have an aunt who is a terrible speller. I can blame genetics. She graduated 1st in her college class (math major), but can't do a crossword puzzle, because she spells the right word wrong.

What's your opinion on spelling? Is it a sign of intelligence? A sign of dilligence? Of a natural ability? Is bad spelling the sign of a deficit?

And did you worry about it when a kid was a bad speller? If it did, how did it rank compared to other things, like poor math skills, or trouble recalling facts in other subjects like Social Studies or Geography? How important did you (do you) think spelling is?

Do you agree w/ the new method of grading that allows for incorrect spelling if the word is something that a kid that age wouldn't ordinarily know how to spell, so long as it's phonetically close?

All teachers, please feel free to respond.

Joan
