I went to an Amish draft horse school in Sugar Creek. We visited the harness shops, wagon and cart builders. Some invited us to their homes so we could see how they live. They showed us how they live upstairs in the summer because it's cooler, and move down to the basements where it is warmer in the winter, etc. The ceiling fans and power tools running on water power generated from a stream was amazing. We even got to go back into the areas of the Old Order Amish. We also helped shock corn, load it on wagons and take to the silos to make silage. One of the best parts to me was meal time. Not only was the food wonderful, but we ate at a long table much like the Walton's and had real conversations so unlike what most of us are use to today. We did not stay at their homes, but in a motel nearby, but spent each day driving horses and touring the area with Eli Yoder. They were very friendly and so nice. I hope to go back someday. We do go to Jamesport, MO every summer for their big auction. I always have to buy another piece of horsedrawn equipment. And of course eat some homemade icecream and pie, and cinnamon rolls, and chicken noodle soup, and fresh bread, and apricot preserves, and, well you get my drift. I have to go on a diet before and after I go!
