While I think Melissa's dress could have been a bit more loud and eye catching, she still looks wonderful. Her mom and dad arrived in Baton Rouge a few days ago. They say that she's really tired but looks good! Good Luck!

        • Unfortunately, such tapes are not for sale, nor were they ever available to the general public. :( The only way you might find one would be a "black market" "bootleg" type copy, but even that would be very rare as the show wasn't televised...so it would have to be a bootleg of one of only one or two tapes out there..if that makes any sense.   • It's been a crazy past few weeks. Melissa has had some appearances, quite a lot of interview training, fittings. She not only had to prepare for nationals but also pack & move her entire room. She is leaving for UC Fullerton directly from Baton Rouge, plus her parents are selling their house & she had to get all her things ready for that move. She left yesterday. I wish her the best as well! Several gowns were being tossed around as potential competition ones..one black, one white, and a lavendar Takeo design...we'll see.           • I'm not sure when it started as a dual pageant. I know Takeo/eric inherited the un-synched year situation from the previous director. No, they will not be seperate. there will be an additional teen pageant in fall/winter..she will compete at Miss Teen USA NEXT summer...THEN, Miss Hawaii USA will NOT be in May..instead both pageants will be held the following fall...which is when most of the other states have their USA pageants. So, Melissa will have short reign, Radasha will have a very LONG one..something like 18 months. So, finally, in the fall of 2006 we will crown Miss Hawaii Teen USA 2007 & Miss Hawaii USA 2007.             • Actually....when the current directors took over they held the Teen pageant separate from the Miss. The previous director had the dual pageant in the Fall every year.               • I don't know the history of it. I imagine when they decided to hold the two pageants together, it just FELL that way..you know what I mean?   • Radasha must have been 2nd in every phase. Or it could be that the scores were dropped after top 5 and the winners were based off the final placement. I also noticed that there were 8 judges instead of an odd number (which is the normal). I dont think that Val would have won this year. She isnt as strong as Radasha or even Amber.   • As in the USA/Universe pageants, the scores are dropped after each elimination. So, once you are in the top 5, you are given a placement based on overall impression, which determines the final ranking. So, you could actually win all three phases and in the end, the judges could flip flop..and this does happen. • Although I suppose a surprise choice, I do like the winner. I think Alicia & Santos were both very strong. I thought there were a few contestants out of the top five that could have won too. Like the USA system, there are no scores with the top 5, the judges rank them, so previous rankings are out the window. I think the simple fact of just "liking a contestant" more than another comes into play. • Thanks for the support, Shannon. Melissa is a beautiful, articulate, and elegant 18 year old witha great record of community service through out her high school years. I've never seen a photograph of her that I felt did her justice. She is fluent in Chinese and actually spoke that language first at home. She will be rooming with Miss Teen Montana. She has been very busy these few weeks making preperations and packing as she will leave directly from Baton Rouge to start college in California. There certainly COULD be more done in terms of publicity, but there ARE people who spend time (their free time away from work) recruiting. • Actually, I did not go to miss USA in Baltimore. But, of course, the director and another committee member did. As always, there are favorites who stood out in preliminaries who do not make the cut. It seemed by all accounts that there were MANY standouts who did not make the top 15 this year (Jennifer amongst them, for sure). Obviously, they were looking at more than what you see onstage in making their selections. I don't think people were unhappy as much as they were seeing a change in what they are looking for.   • Judging is so weird in pageants. Its a gamble because no matter how prepared you are for a pageant, you can still lose. Its not that the judges didnt see anything in her...they probably just prefered a different type of girl. Preferance is the bottom line! • The last I heard about her was that she married Andrew Yani (sp) (A Hawaiian TV and E! personality) and they were living in CA and have a toddler.
