Subject: Beginner's ignorance

If anyone has time to put a beginner on the right track...I recently bought a pair of Binatone MR250s (cheapskate, I know), and am a bit disappointed by the reception and range. Is it simply a question of the more you pay, the more you get? If so, any recommendations for the best low-end-of-the-market models? Thanks.
