I couldn't agree any more! It is an absolute joke that the NRL thinks they can create top referees out of ex-players by sending them straight into the fulltime squad! Where is the experience that these guys need to gain from district refereeing? They have thrown these guys into the deep end and as referees, the best place to refine your skills is in the park footy matches in the juniors. These so-called 'referees' that they have contracted have no where near enough experience to be officiating at that level. You make your mmistakes as a new referee in the park where the effect is minimal, not in the Toyota Cup! Furthermore, the flow-on effect that these guys have created is going to cause problems right down to the juniors. 3 fulltime spots that would have gone to experienced, hard-working Premier Squad officials have just disappeared! Every referee below the NRL Squad has been put back 3 places, which can turn into more and more years slogging it out in the lower grades for referees who are more than capable and deserving of being in the NRL squad! That means that the top 3 Premier Squad referees are put back, the top 3 Inter-District Squad referees are put back and possibly 3 Junior Rep hopefuls will have to slog it out even further in district.
The message that this 'Cadetship' is sending to all referees below the NRL is that if you're an ex-player, you've got more chance of making it at the top than someone who has spent years refining their skills in the park and reps and grade for nothing. It is not acceptable that we have this type of double-standards in our game where referees who aren't ex first grade players are slapped in the face and told that they are wasting their time and energy because they aren't a famous name! I don't have a problem with ex-players learning their way through district and reps refereeing like we all have to do, but to skip straight to the top is ridiculous! It's an absolute smakc in the mouth from the NRL who are basically saying "$%#! you' to everyone in the Premier and Rep squad! It is just typical of the politics and mentality that the NRL has and this has to stop!
We need to stand up and be heard on this because the referees in this great game have been walked over for far too long! If the NRL want to feed us this tripe that it will be better for the game, every official from Premier squad down may as well step aside so these geniuses running our game can fill our spots with ex-players because that seems to be 'the best option' in their eyes! What a load of horse!!! >Well said! Just another waste of money which should be
>spent on the current non-nrl refs.
>
>Who says that ex-players make good referees? that is
>where the whole premise of this program falls flat on
>it's face.
>
>So the NRL is effectively saying "stuff you" to all
>the referees out there who have slogged their guts out
>for years, getting paid chicken-feed, abused etc
>
>Great job NRL!! rolleyes!
