Your Mom sounds like mine (except that she would have just invited everyone to her sister's and forgotten to tell her sister about it). The family dinner at my brother-in-law's just got cancelled. He and his first wife have been going at each other in one protracted post-divorce battle after another since 1998. The most recent one resulted in his being held in contempt for quitting his job and refusing to pay child support. He could have asked to court to modify child support, but he thought if he just wilfully violated the court's order, the judge would see how petty the ex was when she sought to enforce it. Now he thinks the judge just hates men.

Tangent - I was at the first wedding WITH the toxic mother-in-law, and the ex-beast is the only woman I've ever met who was nastier than TMIL. The night before the wedding, the two of them had a knock-down drag-out swearing match - in the restaurant - about whether TMIL or the groomsmen should get the doggie bag (yes, doggie bag) from the groom's dinner. XH1 (not a groomsman, no claim on said doggie bag) walked out, and I went with him. Next day, before the wedding, brother-in-law hollers at me because XH1 "made my mother cry" and what was I doing to help her? Okay, so I did her makeup and kept my mouth shut. Heard at reception, ex-Bride to TMIL: You'll never see your grandchildren, never hold them in your arms. TMIL to ex-Bride: Like I could even lift them,go fuck yourself.

end Tangent

Soooo, the stress has been escalating at the home of BIL and new wife. BIL has been pretty horrid to his kids w/ex-Bride, who has been relentless in her attempts to alienate them from him. They are lovely kids, but both are showing a lot of stress from being caught between badly behaving parents. BIL's 4 year old w/ new wife is also totally stressed and showing it every way a 4yo can - and Samson hits her back (GAH), and then she goes ballistic screaming at everyone in sight to give Samson a time out (which makes giving him one problematic, especially since she follows him to the chair to push him, hit him, and scream at him). Pre-school teacher gave us a note about Samson's behavior on Mondays (Something in particular going on Sundays - he's so good the rest of the week??? Uh, trip to BIL's....)

So, am I sad about Christmas at home?

Nope.
