My guess as to why no comments probably because it's being discussed by every show on every sports radio station the last two days, with multiple appearances by Steigerwald and Mears so there isn't anything to rumor monger about.

This one is simple: Mears was always going to be the successor to the Lange/Steigerwald lineage.

The only question was one of timing.

So the timing was either because of Steigerwald health or fatigue, which he did not mention or allude to at all in any of his appearances or letter in the PG.

The only other thing I can think of is the new Las Vegas NHL franchise is starting to build their media team and Mears would have certainly been a front runner for the play by play job there. So ROOT/Penguins figured now was the time to secure Mears.

Actually thinking about it some more, during his Cook & Poni interview Mears almost let slip that he knew about this awhile ago so the Las Vegas thing might be on the right track.
He was asked when he first heard the news who was it that he called first: "hmm,ahh,umm, I've got to think back cause it wa..there wher..it's really..my parents..."

Makes me think he almost said something like "it was..awhile ago.."
