Subject: Future of Wessex League

Alex Pike makes some good points about the Wessex League in the interview with him reported on pitchside.net The standard of grounds and pitches has certainly deteriorated in recent seasons - and possibly the standard of football as well - but it's alarmist to ask who will possibly replace the four clubs that have applied for promotion.
The Wessex League is one of 10 Step 5 leagues from which only 8 clubs will be promoted at the end of the season, so there is not even a guarantee that the Wessex Champions will go up. And, if and when they do, they'll be replaced by a relegated club - almost certainly Newport IOW - which will not result in a weakening of the league.
No, if the Wessex League wants to improve the standard of football played and its standing in the non-league world, I suggest its officials focus on helping the smaller clubs improve their playing surface rather than worrying too much about how many seats are under cover.
