This is obviously not a popular opinion. BUT I am going to encourage you to do it.
We are not in NYC or LA...but on the other hand we do live in an area that is also higher up in the industry.
Our local Sunday paper has a section for theater etc in the classifieds (I know not all areas do) and that is actually where I found my daughters first audition when she was 4 months old. She got the job for a national print ad.
After that we did decide to go with an agency. We did a lot of research on agencies in our area. Found some of the most reputable and well known ones. Ones that do not charge you, require classes etc.
After I booked my daughter with an agency (I actually ended up booking her with three or four but only one got her jobs on a regular basis)she had auditions pretty much weekly. Between the ages of 4 months and 3 years she did print ads and commercials.
She is older now and wants to get back into it. She remembers some of it and loved doing it.
We have never paid for a casting call or paid an agency.
I say look in your yellow pages or even online for agencies in your area. Book an interview with them. Ask questions. And if they have the right answers look into it more. Yes it is harder if you do not live in a huge area...but not impossible
