Five toots on the Waverly Square firehouse whistle did it for us... but they had to do it five times in a row. I can't remember how many times we sat there and heard it toot... a set of "ones"... then a set of "twos"... and on up till they got to "fives". We also listened to the closings on WFAS.

Years later I became the one reading the closings on FAS, and answering the phones when all the little ones would call to ask "is there school today?" GRRRRRR... "It's a big world out there kid... which school?"

As kids though... the whistles meant it was time to grab the sled and head for Leewood golf course for a day of fun in the snow... or at least til they chased us off.
