I was recently approached to donate to someone's entry fee for a national pageant. I was perplexed because I feel like if you can't afford it on your own why are you entertaining the idea? It wasn't for an ad page of anything but straight up the entry fee.

How do you feel?

I can top that. We once had a director contacting us about helping pay for her queen to go to nationals right after the pageant was over. The director was in serious debt. 12/01/13 Sun

Its a hobby and I think that ladies need to pay their own way or get it through business sponsors but not friends, family, individuals. In this tight economic world, it's ubsurd to expect others to pay your way. IMHO 12/01/13 Sun

I personally think it is tacky. Again, if you can't afford to play, don't play. It isn't like you are trying to raise money for a good cause.You are literally trying to raise money for a MRS pageant that nobody outside of the pageant world cares about. -- Just my opinion though., 12/04/13 Wed

have to agree. No one cares and generally respects pageants, let alone want to contribute to the cause. It's rather humiliating to see girls asking for funds and worse when no one is donating. Wouldn't want my name on one. -- no thanks, 12/04/13 Wed

I understand going to a business and asking for money if you have been an excellent customer. However, to ask family and friends for money so that you can do a pageant is disgraceful. It is indicative of our Obama society, if I can't afford it, somebody else should pay my way because I want it. No respect for what other people have earned for themselves. Even if somebody else got their money by pure luck, that does not mean that you are entitled to any of it. To think otherwise shows that you lack character. I can see both sides to this. A lot of women especially those new to pageantry believe its acceptable to ask individuals for sponsorship since directors encourage it (quite a bit) when they tell how much it cost to enter the pageant. On almost every website application form right after the fee amount is a blurb about getting family and friends to pay it so for this to stop the directors need to stop saying its the normal way to raise the funds. This is VERY true. That was the first thing I was told when I started doing pageants and I continue to see directors tell contestants that today. I also notice that when listing the contestant's sponsors in the program book, the director doesn't even give the option to list "None" or "Myself". Under the sponsor's section, it ALWAYS says "Family and Friends". (Unless the contestant actually has businesses sponsoring her, of course) (NT) -- So true, 12/09/13 Mon

It says Friends and Family but it usually isn't Friends and Family that pay. It is one thing for a young girl 14-26 to ask. I agree, that's why I said the DIRECTORS need to stop telling contestants to use Friends and Family. I don't even believe a 26 year old woman should be asking for friends/family to pay. I didn't dare ask any friends/family to help me pay for pageants even when I first started at 19 years old. I thought it was silly then and think it's silly now. If I needed extra money I actually went to businesses, to get sponsorship. Amen! I know better after a few pageants but its funny to see how the directors do this. I got a Go Fund Me message earlier this week from someone wanting to compete at a Mrs America prelim. Why on earth would you ask another contestant to sponsor you?? Your kid I get, children can't raise their own entry fees. Some pageants are for charity. But one Mrs contestant to another? I do not applaude Mrs. contestants seeking donations on line such as fundme. Saw one on FB who actually posted a video. If you need money to help support your quest for the crown, do it privately. tacky at best 02/04/14 Tue

it takes a lot of moxy to ask the public to donate to your hobby. I find ways to do it even if I have to save for a year, sell stuff, make things, but to flat out put your hand out is really awful. -- i wouldn't be able to hold my head up, 02/13/14 Thu
