Not that I can know, exactly, but in all the times I've seen Keith perform (on tv, like we all have, and in person twice), I've never had that creeping feeling there's more going on here than just a truly dynamic performer giving it his best shot - with one exception.

There's a tape over at YouTube of him playing in Atlanta. It's not "Stupid Boy." It's one of his older songs, I think. (Sorry, can't check at the moment) It's obviously late in the show, and Keith is positively wringing with sweat, but with a smile on his face that wants to be a laugh. There's something about that tape I can't quite explain, but it bothers me. He's smiling, he's happy, he's singing, he's sweating. But it's astonishing how untimely his movements are, given that it's Keith. I don't mean he's flopping around or reeling like a drunk or anything. I just mean it's "off." (To me, anyway.)

It's a subtle kind of thing that I'm not even sure is there, really, but it's like watching a baseball game when you've seen that shortstop turn the double play a million times. After a while, you just *know* if he's going to make it or if that one hitched step or other infinitesimal hesitation is enough to stall the play and leave the opposing runner safe.

Do I think Keith has been on drugs all along? No, I don't. Do I think he's been drinking the whole time? I have no idea, but I have never seen anything terribly "altered" about any of his interviews or performances - even right up to his announcement about going into rehab - except for the tape from Atlanta and a couple of clips of him in the studio working on the album.

I, too, want him back clean and sober - and happy! And I want to believe he's been that way for most, if not all, of the time I've "known" him. Whatever may have happened to him, whatever it is he may have done, I think it must've been recent and no matter what we may be hearing from the $10,000 winner of the Publicity Freaks Clearing House Award, until we hear it from Keith, I'll hang in with that.

I don't know if this is the very adolescent me coming through, but I've been thinking...there are those men out there who, even though they want soooo badly to be in a committed relationship and in marital bliss, can't handle the ropes of mariage that hold them down. I seriously hope Keith is not one of those men who buckled under the pressure and relieved his stress those ways. I've always thought of him as that rebel without a cause, doing whatever pleases him, having a little "fun" and then driving away with no regrets. Maybe it's just me dreaming that he hates the confines of his mariage and that I could be the one to give him a little "fun"...a girl can dream right?! lol
