Subject: Pre-Show: Oh SOOO Blessed by Keith Karma
In reply to: Texas_Cheryl 's message, "Waco Concert Review. I’m sorry this is so slow in coming. Since I took Friday off I actually have to WORK today to get caught up. I can only write when my boss can’t catch me!" on 16:39:36 02/05/06 Sun

Where to start where to start, I guess I’ll start at the beginning. The first Keith Karma: I woke up at 6:30am to RAIN. I hate driving in rain, driving in rain scares me a little bit, and the other idiots I’m driving in rain with scares me a lot. I hadn’t gotten much sleep and I wasn’t looking forward to driving tired in rain. By the time I left the rain had cleared, the sun was out, and the streets were dry. Clear weather and light traffic coming back too. God was VERY good to me!

I got to the venue about 3:45pm. I drove around a bit, saw the busses, and found an excellent parking space. (Why wouldn’t I 4 hours before the concert. Five minutes after I park, as I’m sitting in my car sorting what goes in with me (cameras, film, batteries, etc) and what could stay in the car, the parking lot attendants take there place to collect the $5 parking fee. I went up and asked “Do I pay now or after the concert as I leave?” (I know, you think I’m crazy, but I try to be honest and it was only $5.) I was told “Well you’re in now aren’t you?” I said yes. He says “Well then I guess you got lucky. Oh, and by the way, the door you parked by won’t be unlocked tonight so you might want to move to the other end of the parking lot to have a straight line to the main entrance.” I thanked him and offered him a $5 tip for the info but he refused and I went on my way.

Having never been to the venue I wasn’t sure where I was going so I just ambled up to the door and tried it. One of the doors (of 5) was unlocked so concessions could come and go and set up so I just walked right on in. I started walking around the halls and found a side entrance to the arena. Once again, ONE door was unlocked so Keith’s crew could come and go as needed. I walked in to the quiet arena, sat down in a chair out of the way, and SECONDS later I hear Keith say “It’s too quiet I need it louder.” That’s right. On stage at 4pm was Keith Urban doing sound check. Seconds later he starts to play. The stage lights were off but I made out the jeans, tee, and baseball cap. The floor lights of the arena were on and reflected off his guitar and I could see him play! I got to watch sound check for 10, maybe 15 minutes. Because I was so quiet and out of the way I wasn’t noticed right away. Then it happened. Keith pointed right at me from the stage and I knew that was it, I was in trouble. His road manager walked in behind me maybe a minute later. “Do you have a badge?” I gave him a confused look (dang those acting skills come in useful at the strangest times!) and said “Badge?” He said “Sound check is closed and you can’t be inside the building without a badge.” I said, “Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t know. I just wanted to hear him play.” He asked, “How long have you been in here?” I said, “Ummm, 10, maybe 15 minutes.” He said “WHAT?!? Well, that’s 10-15 minutes more than most people get to see. How the hell did you get in anyway?” I said, “The door.” (NO, he was NOT amused.) He said, “That’s for Keith’s personnel to use ONLY.” I said, “I’m sorry, I didn’t know. This is my first Keith Urban concert and my first concert in 14 years. I’m used to stage managing NOT attending these kinds of events and I’m sorry if I upset or made anyone angry.” He personally escorted me to the door, held it open for me, and said “The doors open at 6:30pm. We’ll see you then.”

Oh NO, that’s NOT all.

I walked outside and there was a lot of activity: radio station setting up their booth, a concessions tent being set up, etc. I took a book with me so I went in search of a quiet place to read. I knew the buses were on one side of the arena and figured it would be busy over there too, no chance to see Keith since he was on stage, so I headed around the building the other direction. About a quarter of the way around there were two sets of locked double doors, a nice clean cement slab, and nobody around so I sat up against the wall in the sun and opened my book to start reading. Right then I heard Keith’s guitar start to play. He could NOT be heard in the front but he could from the side. The exterior doors were mere feet from doors into the arena and I could hear every note. I couldn’t hear him talk well but I could hear the music perfectly. It gets better! Maybe 5 minutes later I hear voices. It was the cleaning crew washing the doors and windows. Thinking sitting on cement in the sun would get old for 2 hours I got up and asked them thru the closed door, “Is there a seating area around here? Maybe some benches or someplace I could sit and read?” The two ladies didn’t speak English so they called over two more cleaning people. The cute Mexican guy spoke English. I repeated my request. He opened the locked door, motioned me inside, patted the seat of a padded folding chair that just happened to be sitting right inside the door against the wall, and held the door open for me to pass thru. I asked “Are you sure? I don’t want you to get into trouble for letting me in.” He smiled, said “You aren’t bothering anything.” and walked away. From that corner (that’s right, I was in the literal corner) I was a few feet from the arena entrance and got to hear every note and every word of sound check. Keith was on and off stage until right before 6:30pm, sometimes playing random music (or maybe new material I just didn’t recognize), sometimes playing current music, and sometimes singing. The doors were supposed to open at 6:30pm but Pat Green didn’t take the stage for sound check until 6:30pm. Due to the time he only got to do half of two songs and that was it.

And another thing. Five minutes after I sat down inside the building and opened the book (no I never read, just wanted to look like I was so I wouldn’t get kicked out again) an older married couple (at least in the 70’s) wearing event staff badges came to that spot. They were there to work the concert though they didn’t seem to know anything and couldn’t or wouldn’t answer any questions once the doors finally opened. I just knew they were going to kick me out but I waited for them to say something. They never said a word. She pulled up a chair about a foot from me, sat with her back to me the whole time, and never said a word to me. (An old person that doesn’t like to talk? WHAT?!? She and her husband chewed the ear off EVERYONE who walked by but never said one word to me.) She kept coughing so I offered her some of my water. A foot away and she didn’t hear me. Now, I was in that spot for a little over TWO hours. People walked past me all the time but no one spoke to me or even acknowledged I was there. I seriously wonder if I was invisible in that chair in the corner. (SOOO fitting, I know.)

Once the doors opened I went in, took my seat, and tried to talk to the people around me. They were very cliquish and would only talk to people in there group. I overheard someone say all floor seats went to Baylor people and when I said “No they didn’t.” she got MAD. Floor seats were offered to fan club members at the presale where I got my 13th row ticket so I knew not everyone on the floor was from Baylor. Many of the seats may have been gotten by Baylor people, but I guarantee the Dallas, Nebraska, and eBay buyers didn’t work at Baylor to get tickets.

Maybe here I better explain how I got from row 13 (Section F row 3) to center Section B row 2 seat right in front of the drums. I admit it, I was BAD, and I have no remorse. I bought a ticket at the fan club presale in Dec. Then the week before Christmas a great friend of mine mentioned her 21 year old grandson was really good on the guitar and thinking about trying to make it in the music business and that he might want to go to the concert with me. She gave me money (my ticket price) to either buy my ticket or try to get another one for him, hopefully close by. For Christmas all I got was money so I figured what the hell. It’s my first KU concert, I don’t know when or if I’ll get to see him in concert again, I wanted the grandson to get a good idea of what really goes into putting on a show like that, and dag nab it I wanted I wanted AMAZING seats. So I bought 2 tickets on eBay (adding to the scalping problem I know) but not really caring. The grandson chickened out going 2 weeks before the concert, so I had 2 extra tickets instead of one. I intended to list the 13th row ticket on eBay for what I bought it for to try and get my money back anyway (since I refunded the grandmother’s money when he backed out) so I went ahead and auctioned both tickets. I started the listings at what the tickets originally sold for and let bidders decide how high they would go. I did make a little money on the 13th row ticket but the 2nd row ticket buyer was CRAZY. She paid more for 1 ticket than I paid in Dec for both, she was in Scottsdale, AZ, and she never showed up for the concert. WHY would anyone pay big bucks for a concert ticket and not go? I just don’t understand that. Oh well, either way Max it Out and St. Jude are getting nice donation checks in Keith’s name. I just wanted to get my original ticket price back and for the tickets to not go unused. I never meant to make money off them so all proceeds are going to organizations I know Keith supports. At least a little good will come out of using eBay. (A little more good from eBay: the woman who got called up to the stage’s edge for a kiss by Keith got there from her sign that said “I sold vital organs on eBay to Be Here tonight.” When Keith asked what she sold she said, “My heart.”)

. . . about Keith, of course, but also about the boss.

Mine has this habit of just "popping" around the corner with no notice he's coming. Yikes! I usually have an Excel window that's open all day. Can you say click the taskbar button? LOL!

Now imagine if we had all gone to this show...the road manager would have never been heard from again.

Dang, Cheryl you should work for the FBI! LOL! Well, everyone else may have not noticed you, but Mr. Urban sure must have. Well, you might not ever get his hugs or kisses but ,heck, you at least got a finger point! Just think, for that moment all his attention was focused on you, Texas_Cheryl. He may have thought you were going to kill him or wanted to kill you but you had his attention nonetheless...LOL! You are a sly devil, girlfriend! Fumbling around, book in hand, offering water bottles and cash to others that don't rat you out...(Note to self: bring book and water bottle to appear nonchalent and sooooo not excited about being near Keith in order to trespass and eavesdrop at will...LOL!) No aplogies for the good tickets, Cheryl. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do...Can't wait for the concert review!
