I wonder what the tally would be if we could do this just once.
There are a lot of people talking NO and saying Fight.
If we could split the vote, just this once.
Those who vote Yes get the terms of the agreement.
Those who vote no, get to fight for their 1% and fight for holidays, and risk losing BOTH!
Who knows how long it would even take?

Bet there would be a lot less NO's and fighters then.

Subject: Pension Reform Proposal

So, how is this working out FOR us?

Pension Reform III core components:

Increase the retirement age for virtually all state workers, reflecting the fact that people are living and working longer.

This change will more closely align the state system with the retirement ages already set by the federal government for Social Security benefits.

Group 1 (elected officials and most general employees): Increase the retirement age to 60-67 from the current 55-65;
Group 2 (employees with titles reflecting hazardous duties): Increase the retirement age to 55-62 from the current 55-60;
Group 3 (state police): The maximum benefit is currently reached with 25 years of service. Our proposal would increase this to 30 years by lowering the benefit factor after 20 years of service from 3.0 to 2.5 per year of service;
Group 4 (firefighters, police officers, some corrections officers): Increase the retirement age to 50-57 from the current 45-55
Eliminate early retirement subsidies

The current system provides an incentive for those who have reached minimum retirement age to retire before reaching maximum retirement age, as the increase in benefits resulting from additional years of service is less than the benefit of additional years of pension. The Administration’s proposal would eliminate this incentive.

Gov. Deval Patrick defended his decision to sink some $60 million in taxpayer funds into a solar panel factory he once called a “symbol” of the Bay State’s economic future that announced yesterday it is closing and laying off 800 workers.

In one of the largest direct investments in a company in state history, Patrick bet heavily on the success of Evergreen Solar Inc., located at the former Devens military base, a move that drew fierce criticism during his campaign for re-election. Yesterday, he lost that bet.

“I’m obviously deeply disappointed,” Patrick told the Herald, referring to Evergreen’s decision to close the manufacturing plant.

“We worked real hard to build up this company, and I’m delighted that we’ve had four years of 900 jobs. But I am obviously disappointed that we’re going to lose 800 of those jobs, and I’m about fighting for every one of those jobs,” he added, referring to some 100 jobs that still remain at the company’s Marlboro corporate office.

Asked whether it was a mistake to bet millions on the firm, Patrick said, “No, no. First of all, we have clawback provisions,” referring to a series of strings attached to the tax credits and incentives, which included a $1-per-year lease at a site that would have otherwise cost millions.

The Patrick administration offered Evergreen more than $76 million in incentives, but the company ultimately accepted about $58 million in aid in 2007 - the bulk of which included tax incentives and direct grants, along with a $5 million loan and a $13 million grant for infrastructure improvements to support the Devens plant.

Top state officials said yesterday they were confident they would recoup “a significant portion” of the money, but would not give estimates.

Evergreen has been steadily shifting jobs to its facility in lower-cost China, but until today had indicated its Massachusetts operations would continue, giving Patrick no prior warning of the closure.

Even some critics of the plant were rendered speechless by the abrupt shutdown, slated for the end of the first quarter of 2011.

“It’s a tragedy,” said Jay Wallace, a neighbor who came to blows with Evergreen over noise coming from the plant. “I feel bad for all the jobs that were promised and lost. We took a huge brunt in the beginning, because they didn’t meet their engineering requirements and their noise was off the charts, but they’ve actually just fixed that. In some respects, I was feeling that this was good.”

Evergreen CEO Michael El-Hillow said another drop in solar panel prices forced the company to scrap its Devens facility.

“Although production costs at our Devens facility have steadily decreased, and are now below originally planned levels and lower than most Western manufacturers, they are still much higher than those of our low-cost competitors in China,” El-Hillow said in a statement.

Patrick indicated little regret over the investment.

He added, “I think we did what we could have and should have.”
