Subject: Only a Gretch expression can suitably describe my day yesterday......

"craptastic"

right from the moment my alarm went off (an hour early, WTF???)

my car broke down in pouring rain and heavy traffic right outside the car park entrance to the Uni, why the security guys found that funny I have yet to discover

I almost choked on a piece of sausage at lunchtime

I stained my new white lacy blouse with beetroot juice

I lost my mobile, no trace of it for most of the day then someone found it just before I went into total meltdown

My washer refused to work when I got home

I still have a headache but so far, (fingers crossed) today has been incident free

watch this space

Beetroot is very common in salads in Europe. Not in USA? They even use it in France, and as France is the culinary capital of the world it must be good.

Although possibly Andy was drinking beetroot juice. They're weird up north.

I'm fairly sure beetroot is eaten in America! ;-)

you wouldn't see beets on a menu though. nor is it served regularly in homes...or sprinkled on anything. *barf*

I went out for dinner at a fantastic restaurant last night called Chez Pétrelle, and for my main course I had a very slow baked shoulder of lamb with roasted root vegetables including roasted beetroot. I'd never had beetroot roasted before and it was delicious.

[> [> [> [> Oh, BTW -- DZR, 14:23:24 01/15/09 Thu [1] (62.240.244.114)

The beetroot had been roasted with the skin on, and I believe whole and then sliced when served, as the outside was roasted but the inside flesh was firm and clearly hadn't been in direct contact with any fat or oil. It was very tasty, a crisp clean taste (not at all like dirt!), and the flesh was a much lighter colour than I would have expected.

... blanched, then sautéed with shallots in butter is delicious -- goes great with roast pork belly. Red cabbage braised with onions, garlic, apples, cloves, cinnamon and some brown sugar and vinegar is one of my favourite winter vegetable dishes.

Then there's coleslaw, sauerkraut, choucroute. Man! You don't know what you're missing!

(Obviously old dark green cabbage leaves boiled are stinky and disgusting. But cabbage doesn't have to be like that. You've just had it done badly.)
