Subject: How far to work?
How far do you travel daily to work? How far would you be willing to?
Growing up, it was about 15 minutes into "town" and that was just normal. About the same when I was in school.
Since moving here I have been less than 2 miles from work, which is nice as I have a 2 hour gap in the middle on the day and I can come home and let the dogs potty.
We found a house that we like and we are going to take a second look, but it is somewhere between 23 and 35 minutes away from work (37 per Google, 26 per MapQuest, and 22 per the GPS.) We are going to clock it when we go for a second look.
For the most part I don't think I would mind the drive, but the days that I don't get out on time for lunch I wouldn't be able to go home. And I often don't get out of work until 7pm so the drive will make it late. And there are sometimes patients in the hospital on weekends that I need to go and check on.
But so far this house is so much closer to what we have been looking for than any others we've seen. Even the closest houses we have looked at are a bit over 15 minutes away as we need to be outside the city limits due to the stupid lazy dog laws around here.
I would not HAVE to go home at lunch as Tim gets off work earlier than I so the dogs would get out then, but I like having the extra time with them. It also seems ecologically unfriendly to travel it 4 times a day.
We do not plan to ever move again and I hate big decisions!

Make sure when you time the drive -- Steph, 15:53:03 09/06/10 Mon [1] (c-67-171-52-2.hsd1.wa.comcast.net/67.171.52.2)
to do it during the rush hour commutes....we made that mistake with one of the houses we lived in. It was not a bad drive during the weekends when we "tested" the drive but when we actually tried to come home during the "busy" times it was an extra half an hour...yuck

Very good point. -- doni, 16:10:40 09/06/10 Mon [1] (adsl-66-143-166-122.dsl.austtx.swbell.net/66.143.166.122)
It adds a full hour, and usually more, to my commute (30 minutes there and back...approx 22 mi each way), during "rush" hour.

MTE! I drive 12 miles to work.... --

...it takes me about 15 minutes in the morning.
On the way home at 5 pm, it takes me 35 to 40 minutes to
get home...and I live out in the boonies....sort of.

That is a thought -- niki, 09:27:30 09/07/10 Tue [1] (h69-21-145-10.applwi.broadband.dynamic.tds.net/69.21.145.10)
Although I do not leave work at "normal" times and it is mostly county roads (not highway) so I don't think there will be a big effect.

For me.... -- Jenn, 21:33:08 09/06/10 Mon [1] (pool-71-170-235-80.dllstx.fios.verizon.net/71.170.235.80)
....the distance would be a deal breaker unless you plan to keep the house longer than the job. I have had the long commutes and I haaaated it. Didn't mind at first, but after a year, it added stress. Granted, this is with Dallas traffic and Texas heat. Here, your 23 to 35 miles would easily double and potentially triple in bad weather or rush hour traffic. I would personally give up some things I desired in a house for a more desirable commute.
Also factor in spending more on gas, any tolls, more frequent oil changes, etc, if that is any issue for you.

I'm spoiled... -- lynne, 04:31:34 09/07/10 Tue [1] (c-75-72-210-21.hsd1.mn.comcast.net/75.72.210.21)
My drive is about 12 minutes, against traffic. I loathe driving, so I'd be tempted to move if my commute was longer than about 20 minutes. Well, maybe 30 to be realistic.

I plan to keep the job until I retire. I plan to keep the house longer than that, but pretty much everything involves going into town.
Traffic is not a big concern here (thankfully!) Winter is, but as they are county roads they usually get plowed earliest.
But it isn't 23-25 miles, it is 23-35 MINUTES. I tend to measure in time as that is what I am concerned about. It is about 18 miles. But the absolute closest we can get is about 15 minutes, so I keep thinking that this is not a big difference, but I don't know.
There are houses on the market, but so few seem to fit what we need. I am not overly picky about the house itself, but it needs to have an area we can fence and there needs to be a way to easily let the dogs outside (ie I am not walking them out to a fenced area in the snow at 11pm) I also REALLY like a attached garage as we have so much snow here and it is easier.
My car is fairly good on gas, and we have talked about Tim getting a cheap car and only driving his truck when he needs it, but he needs it fairly often. Tim already (for 5+years) has 30 minutes to get to work and it doesn't bother him at all, but he enjoys driving whereas I just don't mind it.
I hate big decisions. I guess we will see.

I recommend... -- suek, 09:55:50 09/07/10 Tue [1] (NoHost/12.174.118.19)
if you HAVE the time and choose to go the longer distance, I love books on CD...I have listened to them for a good 18 years now and love it. My drive is only 15-20 minutes (about 12 miles) but I love my drive to/from as I can move forward in my book!

definitely a good way to pass time -- Jenn, 11:30:57 09/07/10 Tue [1] (pool-71-170-235-80.dllstx.fios.verizon.net/71.170.235.80)
I even had my mini dvd player along. I would bring movies or tv on dvd that I had seen plenty of times, but love. That way, I didn't need to see it (not safe!) but would just listen. That passed a lot of time for me.

Minutes is definitely better than miles. Here it would still take a lot longer. But like I said, that's Dallas for you.
At our old house, I lived 8 miles from the gallery. Most days it took 30 minutes. Some days it took 45. For 8 miles. Blecch. I used to not mind driving. But Dallas drivers in Dallas traffic make me a little crazy!
Just try it if you can sometime during the time you would normally be driving. That will tell you plenty. :)

For years, I had a 20 minute commute -- Tapanga, 05:02:28 09/07/10 Tue [1] (CPE-70-94-62-20.kc.res.rr.com/70.94.62.20)
Then, I switched jobs and my commute became 35-40 minutes and I hated it. When we bought our house 2 years ago though, we didn't move closer to work. The house is forever and the jobs probably aren't. And, since I quit, that was obviously correct. Steve still has a 45 minute commute but we're less than 2 miles from my parents' house and that's big help sometimes. Plus, if we had moved to a different suburb two years ago, I wouldn't be on the Planning Commission and everything else now. Believe me, the pollution caused by our two commutes bothered me but I figured since you can't count on retiring from the same employer, it was better to pick the retirement house.
