Subject: The Power Plant Would Be Good For Dracut
In reply to: Michael H 's message, "The Bottom Line - NO POWER PLANT FOR DRACUT" on 10:59:43 09/06/01 Thu

The power plant would be good for Dracut, and for society as a whole.

1) The amount of taxes generated by the plant, as compared to the intrusiveness to the neighbohood and the cost to the Town to provide related services, is a deal for the taxpayers. In order to generate the same amount of taxes from commercial sources, you would need to fill up the rest of the remaining open space in Dracut with little factories and terminals, causing orders of magnitude more pollution, noise and disruption. A modern power plant in that location is a perfect use of the resources available.

2) Each year in the US, 50,000 people die as the result of pollution from old, dirty, coal-burning plants. To the extent that these plants are built, as the Conservation Law Foundation and other really green institutions have recommended, old plants will be used less and ultimately taken offline. Electricity is fungible, and demand will not decrease in our lifetimes. Better to get it from clean sources than from filthy sources.

By the way, most people in this town overwhelmingly support the plant. If you believe otherwise, why not a) get a petition up for another referendum on the subject, or b) run candidates for Selectman whose sole platform is anti-plant? Care to bet on the outcome? This forum and others do not come close to representing the consensus in Town. (Hate to be the one to break it to you!)
