Subject: "Don't cry for me Colleen Garry!"
In reply to: Michael H 's message, "Alcohol Tax Bill On Beacon Hill" on 06:50:41 05/24/01 Thu

This is laughable on so many fronts I needed to take a day to give my thoughts some sense of organization.

First, what is this trend in society where we assign a medical pathology to what is clearly a behavioral issue. Expanding the definition of “disease” to encompass drug addiction, degenerate gambling, and being a philanderer (Wade Boggs, Michael Douglas) is simply an exercise of the Liberal Left to legitimize deviant behavior. Once legitimized it can then “be treated” by a confluence of Government sponsored programs which must be paid for by a host of taxes.

And, I’m sorry but these programs often seem at cross purposes. Some in the government would have me pay for needle exchange programs. In other words, I would enable a heroin addict a safer way to continue being addicted. I am now asked to fund programs to combat this addiction that I have already helped facilitate.

I have empathy for people who are addicts, to a certain extent. I have overwhelming empathy for the family members who are affected by the addict’s behavior. But if money were the cure-all for these behaviors, Robert Downey Jr. and Darryl Strawberry would have been clean and sober a long time ago.

Despite Colleen Garry’s assertion, I have a hard time equating some kid on the ward at Boston Children’s or Dana Faber with a predatory low-life mugging old ladies of their social security money so they can stick it in their arm or up their nose. In fact, it’s absolutely absurd.

It’s obvious to me with her sponsorship of this bill as well as thumbing her nose at the electorate with her vote on the Clean Elections funding, that Colleen is more concerned with ingratiating herself to the liberal establishment on Beacon Hill rather than representing the voters who put her there. Or perhaps she is attempting to drive all business out of Dracut in the hope that we no longer need the lighting on Lakeview Ave that she has yet to deliver on. She’d Better do something (finally) about the Tyngsboro Bridge though, because traffic to New Hampshire is going to triple with this additional tax.

And isn’t it particularly galling that the Great & General Court would contemplate a tax to aid addicts when the lottery, another harmful societal woe, hums right along with its $10.00 scratch tickets. Please. Don’t cry about those poor addicts when the State participates in running a numbers racket preying on those who can least afford it. It’s all about extracting as much money from the citizenry as possible for the State.

Finally, if this goes through and we have yet another tax levied against us, I hope the first treatment center is located in the State House. Those marathon budget debates last year certainly conveyed the need for some help for “Those who still suffer.” No show votes and booze-soaked legislators who don’t have the leadership to be an example but can look us straight in the eye and ask for some more of our money.
