Subject: Elastics for Ghillies - info

Since so many have asked at the studio, I'm posting the information that was sent to the Company/POI dancers regarding using elastic cord rather than the ghillie laces. Here's the original email from Jill:

Hello Dancers,

In an effort to make shoe changes during performances as FAST as possible, girls may be interested in converting their ghillies to elastic laces instead of regular shoe laces. This is strongly recommended for anyone who has tight changes for the upcoming POI show!

Depending on how tight you like to tie your laces, choose one of the following black elastics, each available from JoAnn Fabrics Store for about $1. If you like your laces very tight, choose the 1/4” elastic because it is more the width and feel of a shoe lace.

1/4” braided elastic (www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat2660&PRODID=prd2901&source=search)

Oval cord elastic (www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat2846&PRODID=prd2902&source=search)

Or

Round cord elastic (http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=cat2846&PRODID=prd2904&source=search)

Using the elastic, lace and tie your shoes as you normally do except double knot with two tight knots, and gather the extra length into a bow. Dance once BEFORE you cut them to make sure that it is comfortable. When it is, undo the bow and add a tight TRIPLE knot, then cut the ends.

To put your shoes on with the elastic laces…

1. Put your foot in and tighten the laces

2. Cross the loop (twist it) once on top of the foot and loop it underneath the foot

3. Cross (twist) again underneath and put the foot through the loop so that the knot is on top

If that doesn’t make sense, just ask someone who has done it already to show you…

Hope this helps!

Jill's updated comment is to use the flat elastic, as the round and oval have had a tendency to cause discomfort to the dancers' feet when worn for long periods of time. My personal experience with my girls is that the cord works best for them. As always, your mileage may vary. Best of luck!
