Subject: My opinion of MS Teen/USA Pageant |
Author: JF [ Edit | View ]
|
Date Posted: 07:29:13 11/14/06 Tue
Last night was my first experience attending the MS Teen/USA Pageant. I must say it was a very organized and well put together pageant. The host was wonderful! He did such a good job. The opening number was very cute but sexy at the same time. I liked how the older girls were in red and the younger girls wore white (they may do this every year). Jalin really stood out to me in this competition because she was wearing a red leather outfit. She looked amazing! The sets on-stage were very effective and looked good at the same time. I wasn't as impressed with Raegan as I was with Kendra. Kendra has received a great deal of negative energy so I was very eager to hear her and see her personality on stage. Raegan was very cute, and her brown dress was stylish - I was kind of hoping to see her red one from Miss Teen USA. She mentioned trying to get into a college in California studying fashion - best of luck to her. During Kendra's onstage time, she had a great sense of humor. I expected not to like her, but I really did. I liked her haircut and her first red velvet dress. The black dress she wore at the end was very very sexy. Kendra said she is getting married next month, and I wish her only the best.
When it came time for the teen results I may have only gotten 4 out of 10 for the teen, however all 4 were in the top 5 as well. I scored Courtney Ponder, Meredith Maginnis, and Anne Elise Parks well in both categories again. These three really stood out in evening gown. Anne Elise has the best on stage presence! Courtney Ponder was wearing a white dress that looked amazing on her. I also liked Jordan Wilkerson again - she came across as very teen. I agreed with everyone in the top 5 except for Paige Lancaster. I scored her high in swimsuit, I just didn't believe she had as good as stage presence in gown as she did in swimsuit. Her brown dress did look beautiful on her and made her stand out among ALL of the white dresses. I think I have most of the questions correct:
Jordan - Do you think young celebrities such as Lindsey Lohan have made an impact on today's teens, and what kind of an impact is that?
Poor thing, I felt really sorry for her. I think she had a good answer, she just froze on stage.
Courtney - Schools promote competition among athletics, do you think they should also promote academic competition?
She nailed this question in my opinion. I thought she did a really good job.
Anne Elise - How do you go about making big decisions?
She responded with a very heartfelt answer and appeared mature and teen at the same time.
Meredith - Other than parents who has made the largest impact on your life?
Her answer was about her sister, but it seemed a little too practiced in my opinion. She spoke well on stage.
Paige - Who is the best role model for teens in 2006?
She gave an ok answer, but did well with the question.
I was very happy with the teen results. Anne Elise well represent us well, and I believe she will do well at Miss Teen USA. She appeared not only beautiful on stage, but confident. She had a very graceful walk, and spoke well during the onstage question. Best of luck to her!!

Miss MS Teen USA 2007 - Anne Elise Parks
I felt pretty good about my Miss evaluations. I had seven out of the eight correct. I scored the same five really high in both categories - Katie, Alexis, Haley, Sarah, and Jalin. JoAnne and Joy both did very well, I just didn't feel they had the sparkle on stage. I was very impressed with Alexis. I do not know if she has done any other pageants (I know she has won MSU's Miss Maroon and White) but I could see her as MS Miss USA in another year or two! I am not singling Jalin out, however she did trip a little on her dress and it really surprised me. She wore her evening gown from Miss America and it looked perfect on her. I personally had 3 out of the final 5, but I can understand the judges' decision with JoAnne and Joy. The final questions were:
Joy - How do you define success?
She gave a pretty good answer, I just didn't like how she restated at the end, "that is how I define success"
Sarah - What is your opinion of plastic surgery for cosmetic reasons?
Sarah gave a really good answer and almost made me rethink my opinion on this subject.
JoAnne - What type of legacy do you want to leave behind?
Her answer was good, and she appeared well spoken.
Jalin - Thanksgiving is right around the corner, for what are you most thankful?
She gave a very heartfelt answer and did a great job.
Haley - What is one thing you love about Mississippi and will promote?
She showed her personality the best during the question. She gave a really good answer, and I thought her accent was very cute.
I had the exact same results as the judges. I knew as soon as I decided to go that Jalin was the one to beat. She has an incredible swimsuit and a very good height for Miss USA. I believe with her already holding two state titles that she will do very well with this one also. Her Miss America experience will help her a great deal. I believe Sarah is the one to beat for next year. Good luck to Jalin and I hope she brings us the Miss USA crown!!

Lowndes Junior Miss wins 2007 state title
By Ida Brown / senior staff writer
Aspiring attorney/broadcast journalist Caitlyn Terrell Smith, Lowndes County Junior Miss, won the coveted 2007 Mississippi Junior Miss title during Saturdays final night of competition at the Temple Theatre.
The statuesque Smith smiled broadly as she accepted the Mississippi Junior Miss medallion from Virginia Fox, Mississippis 2006 Junior Miss.
A shower of confetti fell from the ceiling as the 40 other contestants rushed toward Smith giving her big hugs and kisses, and extending their congratulations.
In addition to the overall state title, Smith received a $9,000 scholarship from the Mississippi Junior Miss Scholarship Foundation and a $1,000 scholarship from Mississippi Coca-Cola Bottlers Association.
Smith also received the overall talent award, a $1,000 scholarship, and she was a double-preliminary winner in scholastics and fitness $500 scholarships for each during Fridays competition. She is the daughter of Jeffrey and Dr. Laura T. Smith of Columbus.
First alternate was Allison Kelly Pace of Madison County. The daughter of Kaye and Ben Pace of Madison, Pace received a $4,250 scholarship from Mississippi Junior Miss and a $200 scholarship from Mississippi Coca-Cola. Pace was a preliminary winner in scholastics.
Second alternate was Kathryn Ellyse Wyatt of Perry County. The daughter of Joseph and Gloria Wyatt of Richton, Wyatt received a $2,000 scholarship from Mississippi Junior Miss and a $150 scholarship from Mississippi Coca-Cola. Wyatt also was a double preliminary winner in self-expression and scholastics.
Third alternate was Dailee ReJoyce Eubanks of George County. The daughter of Bruce and Dawn Eubanks of Lucedale, Eubanks received a $1,500 scholarship from Mississippi Junior Miss and a $150 scholarship from Mississippi Coca-Cola. Eubanks also was a preliminary winner in talent.
Held under the auspices of the Mississippi Junior Miss Inc., the program opened with a fanfare that included the introduction of the Junior Misses. To lighten the moment, the judges wore large blue star-shaped glasses as they smiled at the contestants. Another highlight of the evening was a moving farewell by Mississippi Junior Miss 2006 Virginia Fox, which culminated with an inspiring dance.
Smith will go on in June 2007 to compete in the Americas Junior Miss national finals in Mobile, Ala.

Clinton's Foshee wins '06 pageant
During a TV commercial break before the start of the talent competition, Miss Byram Tri-County Taryn Leigh Foshee of Clinton took a seat at the Baldwin piano that had been rolled to center stage of the Miss Mississippi Pageant here Saturday night at the Vicksburg Convention Center. She confidently smiled at those in the audience, as if maybe she knew something they didn't.
Foshee tore through the rollicking Spanish number El Cumbanchero with the speed and efficiency of a Jerry Lee Lewis, not a note turning sour. Fans roared their approval as she stood and bowed. At that moment, Foshee admitted later, she had a feeling she might win.
And she did.
Foshee, a 5-foot-4, blue-eyed brunette who graduated from Hillcrest Christian School in 2003 and attends Mississippi State University, was crowned Miss Mississippi, completing her dream after finishing second runner-up the past two years. She advances to the Miss America Pageant in January.
"I have to give my parents a lot of credit for keeping me positive and giving me the confidence to continue trying," Foshee said, standing onstage a half hour after she was crowned by outgoing Miss Mississippi Kristian Dambrino of Grenada. "They've always told me I can do anything I put my mind to."
In the audience, as the finalists were announced, her father, Jim Foshee, wasn't sure she had won.
"I can't get used to them announcing the first runner-up, and the other person actually wins," he said, smiling. "(Wife) Kathleen was acting crazy, and I was just sitting there. I finally asked her 'Did she really win?' It's something that will leave you speechless."
Said Foshee's mother, Kathleen, her left arm wrapped around the couple's youngest daughter, 19-year-old Victoria: "Taryn stuck it out. This is something she's always had her heart set on."
Miss William Carey College Lacey Cherie Cofield of Wiggins was first runner-up.
Second runner-up was Miss University of Mississippi Tara Tutor of Pontotoc. Miss Dixieland Amanda-Paige Whittington of Mize finished third runner-up.
Miss Hattiesburg Rachael Shannon of Terry earned fourth runner-up.
"Taryn is in for a lot of hard work, but it's a tremendous honor and her life is changed forever," said Susan Akin, the last Miss Mississippi who went on to win Miss America in 1986.
Akin watched the pageant on television from her Jackson area home.
Other members of the Top 10 were: Miss Itawamba Community College Corie Philece Stanford of Saltillo; Miss Madison The City Lindsey Cacamo of Madison; Miss Historic Crossroads Jessica Rene Sparks of Belmont; Miss Northridge Anna Elizabeth Tadlock of McCool; and Miss Meridian Ashley Buckman of Bay Springs.
Emcees of the show, which followed a Wizard of Oz theme, were producer/actor Michael Young and 1981 Miss America Susan Powell.
Fourteen contestants, including Miss Metro Jackson Catherine Anne Carter, were awarded scholarships.
Miss Grenada County Lauren Vance won the $2,500 Cellular South scholarship for receiving the most text message votes.

Wilder wins Miss Mississippis Outstanding Teen
Kasey Wilder of Pontotoc was crowned Saturday night as 2006 Miss Mississippis Outstanding Teen, edging out her step-sister, Amanda Duff, both double winners in the three nights of preliminary competition at the Vicksburg Convention Center.
I just feel shocked, said Wilder, a 17-year-old senior at Pontotoc High School told a reporter for the Vicksburg Post shortly after winning the pageant. I cant quit smiling.
Wilder was crowned by Natalie Wood of Oxford, who won the crown during the inaugural pageant, also at the convention center.
Patterned after the Miss Mississippi pageant, which will be in Vicksburg for the 48th year this month, Saturday nights competition began with the naming of the top 10 of the 40 contestants. Those 10 went on to compete anew in talent and active wear. Additionally, the top five were asked to respond to questions that were personalized spins on current events.
For her talent, Wilder sang New York State of Mind, which gave her a win in preliminaries Friday night. She had won the active-wear competition Wednesday.
Her step-sister and first runner-up, Amanda Duff, also 17 and from Pontotoc, tied in the win for the talent competition Wednesday night and tied in the active-wear Thursday night.
Others in the top 10 also included the other two contestants from Pontotoc County: Katie Waldrop, 16, of Ecru, and Lauren Rosado, 16, of Pontotoc.
Wilder is the daughter of George and Kathy Duff and Johnny and Janet Wilder, all of Pontotoc.
She is student council vice president and a member of her schools French Club.
She also is a member of the homecoming court.
She also received the Congressional Award for Leadership.
She will compete Aug. 16-19 in Orlando in the 2006 Miss Americas Outstanding Teen Pageant.
The statewide pageant is open to girls 13 to 17 and serves as an introduction to the pageant world in Mississippi and the United States.
It is managed under the Miss Mississippi Corporation.
