Little Kids Rock "Drums" Up Support for Free Music
Classes!
Drum Manufacturers & Celebrities Unite for Music
Education
July 18th, 2003 NASHVILLE, TN (NAMM SUMMER SESSION -
BOOTH 2037) Little Kids Rock (LKR) an innovative
non-profit music program for children, announced today
that drum industry heavyweights Sabian, Sonor and
ProMark have come together and made a substantial
donation to the Little Kids Rock program. One hundred
complete drum sets have been awarded to LKR, an in
kind donation worth well over $100,000. The first
Little Kids Rock drum classes will begin during the
2003-2004 school year.
"This is going to have a huge impact on our program,"
said David Wish, Executive Director of LKR. "Our
program focuses on teaching kids to play popular
music. To date we have mostly offered guitar classes
but we have always wanted to offer our students
lessons on the drum kit. Now we can!"
"We are proud and honored to be helping Little Kids
Rock reach the newest generation of musicians," said
Jerry Goldenson, Director of Sales and Marketing at
Sonor Drums. Passion and commitment is what music is
all about, concluded Goldenson. Sabian's Director of
Sales, Peter Stairs, is similarly enthused. "When I
read about this great program giving free instruments
and lessons to kids I knew instantly that it was
something that Sabian would want to get behind," said
Stairs. Pat Brown of Promark said, "As
representatives of the music industry it is our duty
to support music education for children and Little
Kids Rock is a first-rate program."
Sabian, Sonor, and ProMark endorsers have also rallied
to the cause. Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers
has donated a Sabian cymbal autographed by the whole
band. The cymbal will be auctioned off by LKR to raise
funds. Vertical Horizon's Ed Toth says, "I wouldn't
be half the musician I am today without music in the
public schools... now some public school systems have
no programs at all. Little Kids Rock brings music back
to those whose lives it affects most; young kids!"
Mike Shapiro, a long time Sonor Endorser, Independent
Artist and Education Director of the highly acclaimed
L.A. Music Academy recounted, Music education in
schools builds character, helps kids realize their
potential and makes dreams come true. I know because
it did all of these for me. I can't imagine where I
would be today without it. My experience took place
years ago, when music education in public schools was
still an integral part of the education process.
Today, for many children, the chance to be involved
with music in their own school is dying. Thanks to
"Little Kids Rock", the opportunity is alive and well
again!
These celebrities are the latest names on LKR's
growing list of high profile supporters. Paul Simon,
Bonnie Raitt and BB King are all honorary members of
the Board of Directors. Carlos Santana's Milagro
Foundation has purchased more than $10,000 worth of
instruments for the program. Bob Weir and members of
the Grateful Dead have funded classes. The String
Cheese Incident has held silent auctions. John Lee
Hooker was a founding Board Member and visited some
classes before his passing.
