Paul Simon Accepts Honorary Seat on Little Kids Rocks
Board of Directors
Music Pioneer Encourages Kids Across the Country to
Rock!
May 28, 2003 San Francisco, CA Little Kids Rock
(LKR) an innovative non-profit music program for
children, announced today that legendary singer,
performer and songwriter, Paul Simon, would be joining
Little Kids Rock as an Honorary Board Member. The
Grammy award winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
inductees post on the LKR Board of Directors will
begin immediately and will help the organization gain
visibility as it provides free music education to
children across the country. Mr. Simon is a proponent
of music education and is committed to using his
talent to encourage children to discover their own
creative outlets.
"We at Little Kids Rock are absolutely thrilled to
have Mr. Simon accept a seat on our Board" said David
Wish, founder of Little Kids Rock. "On a national
level, music programs are being gutted with
unprecedented speed." Wish added, "We are excited to
align forces with such a dynamic, musical legend to
further our mission of bringing free music education
to kids all over the country."
Simon, who was won 16 Grammies, has contributed in a
substantial manner to charitable causes. He is
co-founder of the Children's Health Fund, a national
mobile medical-outreach program that provides free
care for homeless and underserved children in South
Africa. He also regularly performs in benefit concerts
and has raised money for AIDS research, the Nature
Conservancy, the Fund of Detained and Imprisoned
Children in South Africa and AmFAR.
Paul Simon is the latest name on LKR's growing list of
high profile supporters. Both Bonnie Raitt and BB King
are honorary members of the Board of Directors.
Carlos Santana's Milagro Foundation has purchased more
than $10,000 worth of instruments for the program. Bob
Weir and members of the Grateful Dead have funded
classes. The String Cheese Incident has held silent
auctions. John Lee Hooker was a founding Board Member
and visited some classes before his passing.
About Little Kids Rock
Little Kids Rock believes that music is a critical
component of a first-rate education. Many elementary
schools have been stripped of their music programs.
These cuts have had a disproportionately large impact
on children from low-income backgrounds. Little Kids
Rock restores music to its rightful place in the
academic lives of the kids in our public schools by
providing a rich music education program including
instruments, instruction, and trained mentors. Founded
in 1996, Little Kids Rock is headquartered in San
Francisco, California and serves schools throughout
the San Francisco Bay Area, New York, New Jersey and
Memphis. Little Kids Rock will be opening chapters in
Boston and Los Angeles in Fall 2003. For more
