How does your dancer feel about competing when many of their top competitors are missing? My dancer is now not wanting to go to a feis unless they think all the 'big names' will attend because she does not consider it worthwhile! I like to go just for the practice. Does anyone else meet with resistance about this situation? - Good on her! And she is saving you money!! I know of world champ in our region who literally only goes to a few feises coming up to worlds and a couple of majors a year. I suppose there are some dancers that feel their time is better spent in lesson than feis and vice versa as there are a lot of top dancers that seem to feis every weekend. Personally, I like an easy ride for my kids which I know is wrong but then they are not at top level. Can anyone enlighten me as to 1) who all the Irish Dance Associations are (eg An Commision, AAIDT etc etc ).. 2) what are their differences, pros & cons? .. If your school is a member of one association and not another, do you know why the TC chose them over the another organisation? Can you be a member of more than one organisation? I really don't know much about who is who and what is what, but before our school commits to one or another of these associations I want to know that they can offer us the best support for our situation...we are remote from the rest of Austalia, and that makes us very remote indeed especially from the rest of the irish dance world. - The organisations are all basically the same and all have their own political issues. An Coimisiun (CLRG) are by far the largest (hence most complaints are about them) Most dancers start with them and after taking the TCRG join them. You cannot be a member of two but some allow cross organisation feis. CLRG don't. If your TC is qualified they will already be a member of a federation. Is there a good irish dancing school in Darwin?

i am moving to darwin soon and i was just curious to know if there is an qualified irish dancing school that does the exam work, because i currently live in victoria and would like to continue with the exam work to perfect my technique.

any clues as to what i should do?

- hey curious .. we are a small and new school but have been dancing ten years or more. There are only two schools in the whole state - mine which is new and 'progressive' and the other one that is very traditional and does not ever want to do any competition - mostly ceili stuff. Due to our remoteness we can't travel to feis so no-one here is TCRG - well not yet. Is your move from Victoria to Darwin related to a miltary posting? Feel free to email me if you want more info. What a shame the O'Mordha feis once again this year has such a bad press. We went last year the competition ran more than 4 hours late, there were no apologies from the organisers, Canteen was very very poor and the entry fee was a disgrace. Would've thought that the organisers could have made much more effort this year. I'm so glad we decided not to attend again this year. We are used to feis running late but come on at least most of the other feis try their best to make things better year after year, but it seems the organisers at O'Mordha haven't learnt their lesson. -- mum of dancer who had a lovely chilled day, Mon, Feb 26 2007, 11:49:04 [15]

- was horrified to read some of the problems with this feis, luckily dd isn't getting regular recalls yet so we keep to local feis and after what I've read I'm grateful for that. Like everyone I've been to many feis that have run late, sometimes just half hour and so far, the worst has been 2hrs. Each time there has been appologies made for any delays, so I can't understand these feis organisers not having the manners to do the same. I'm feel sorry for all those who attended, not just for the delays, but mention is being made of very questionable results. Not having attended this feis I wouldn't comment on that part, but I would expect to hear soon a good reason for the delays. I should think that many people will really seriously consider whether to ever attend this feis again, maybe then if the numbers go down enough the organisers will realise that people will not continue accepting treatment like this especially at an ordinary feis (NT) -- wishwillow, Mon, Feb 26 2007, 15:28:18
- My friend and i went with our daughters last year, and there were seriously questionable results including my own daughter who won by the way. My friends daughter didn't win. But last year a lot of people had the same complaints and it seems that the organisers have totally disregarded last years complaints so I can't see them taking any notice this year.   - Ermmmm perhaps the fact that Stella's adjudicating the Worlds this year explains why the feis had more dancers from further afield than usual! AND it wasn't just parents from the school helping. There was a very well know NW TC doing the MCing and someone affiliated to her school seemingly doing the results. If he wasn't he was back and forth with the results sheets! The running behind time of a PoTD feis is beyond anyones control, but the running of the comps and splitting them into silly age groups with 2 contestants is!   - Well the ACDC school have been attending this feis for the last couple of years but the friendship between both TC's is well known. Kenny Academy usually attend too...but there were more schools from London this year and more per age group, in the younger ages especially that have never been seen before. 30 in the u14's n 15's is about 10 or more than this feis usually draws. Have attended every year for 10 years so think I know when the competition is growing and can hazard a guess at why!!       - Quite honestly it'd take too long in a post on an ID board. Suffice to say that there is and probably always will be underhandedness in ID. Why we stay in it, heaven knows, I guess in the hope that at some point things will change. People will say there's nothing wrong, and it's those people who need to pull their heads out of the sand, look around and see what's happening. Is it possible that the All Ireland's are becoming more difficult then the worlds. Reason I'm wondering is that everyone has to qualify for the worlds, so it is a limited number of dancers from each region/country who get entered. With the AI's provided you are up to a certain standard, ie: regular placer at most feis through the year, you can enter the AI. I noticed a few names on the AI results list who I don't think qualified for the worlds this year. I am presuming that most if not all the world qualifiers danced at A I's, so put with the number of dancers who maybe should have qualified it would make it not only a bigger comp, but just maybe a more truely reflective one of dancers standards. -- curious to veiws on this, Sat, Mar 03 2007, 5:30:39 [3]

- Have always felt that the Irelands are more difficult due to the numbers. But, on another note I have felt there are less bizarre marks as well in that the winner of the worlds can be afforded such enourmus political pull cause its the 'big one'. You only have to see in some tough regions that great dancers have not qualified and in other smaller regions lesser (no offence intended) dancers have qualified due to less top dancers in that region. Ok so I read in the Irish Post that parents are havng a hard time with the cost of ID, and are blaming tcs commision(sp) etc.. Parents when are we going to take the control and stop spending 1,000 on a dress, If you want to do all the feis in every country, then STOP complaining, too many parents want their dd to follow the latest trends, Stop encouraging your dds to keep up with the kid next door. What are you teaching them.         actually once you've bought a new dress from Gavin, Siopa Rince, Anne Ash etc. you can tell which other dresses they havemade. They all have their own specific way of making the dress. It isn't only the fabrics & designs that make them unique, but the particular method of construction. - Well they should be interested, its their job. I bet if fines were introduced they would soon prick their ears up! At the end of the day its their job to keep parents informed & check entries. In the real world, if you told your boss you simply didn't have time to do your job properly you wouldn't have a job for very long. - I totally agree with Storm on this one. All TC's have passed exams & been registered with AC, therefore put in a position of responsibility. One of the basic responsibilities involved in that job, is completing & signing feis entry forms. If they are unable to ensure that the entry form they are sending in is up-to-date & valid within Syllabus Rules, then frankly they are not doing their job properly! & I would dread to think what else they were incompetent at. We are very happy to host this year�s International Irish Dance and Irish traditional music camp in the beautiful remote location in Hajos, southern Hungary. It is with great pleasure we welcome adjudicator Mary Brady Costelloe to assess dancers on a daily basis and give them written critique, something that will surely prove to be most valuable in the dancer�s progression to achieve perfection. Stephen and Alan Scariff will be here to teach dancers new material and also help them clean old material. We will also have on board Brenda Curtain who will teach musicians of all levels how to play the fiddle/violin (Irish Music), Banjo,Tin Whistle, lilting (Irish yodelling). We welcome dancers and musicians from age 8 up and from all levels.
Registration is now open. Dancers who register before May 15th can avail of the discounted rate of EUR 300 (late entry rate EUR 350). Fee includes tuition, food (3 meals per day) and accommodation. Dancers may arrange private classes with the teacher of their choice for the extra fee of EUR 50/h. Shared private classes EUR 35/h/person. Adults who accompany children will have to pay EUR 150 for food and accommodation. Dancers who wish to also take part in music classes may do so for an extra fee of EUR 50 or musicians who wish to participate in dancing classes will also pay likewise. Tin Whistles may be ordered prior to the camp, however violinists will be required to bring their own instruments.

- I'd try Des in the first instance, Shelley-Anne ( lol at the name ;oP ) as I've known him to list lost property on his website in the past. He could also forward an e-mail to Debbie & Bernadette for you. Secondly, post this question along with your contact details on the UK & Ireland board. I recently found some quite valuable lost property at our own school's feis & gave it to our TC. Turnout was not that important back then--it was about steps, crispness and being clean. Hi, I have a complaint, I'm fed up of going to feis and seeing the same vendor, I'd like a choice of who to buy my wigs from, I have a choice who to buy my daughters dress from, who to buy my shoes from.   - perhaps it is a case of some of the vendors not knowing about the feis, or that the associated costs of being there are simply not worth their effort ..after all unless they already have a child dancing in the particular feis then it is a specific trip for them..and if it is a smaller feis with likelyhood of small sales there is a good chance the trip would end up costing them money... thereby forcing htem to raise prices even more - it is a vicious circle... I guess they have to weigh up the pros and cons of each feis and consider whether it is viable for them. I have to say after speaking to a couple of vendors, they are told they cannot be accomadated because certain other vendors are paying 500.00 up front to keep other vendors OUT. Thats ok for the vendor to pay the 500.00 but what about our choice.   - it's only better to order online when you know exactly what you want, then there is the wait for delivery and if the item isn't right, having to send it back, the cost of which isn't always covered by the seller. And you can't browse the same way online, it's nice to physically pick things up and check them. When it comes to wigs and shoes, especially, they need to be tried on. I personally do buy a lot online and mostly from overseas because of price, but used to always wander round different vendors at feis and buy something I just like. Now with feis so often only having one vendor I don't bother. If what the other post says is true, then that is really bad. That one vendor can block others from a feis like that. Shame on feis organisers who go along with it. So much for parents ONCE AGAIN being allowed choice. - It's because feis only allow one of each commodity at the feis, mostly due to space. It's well known amongst feis vendors that one particular vendor will offer more money for the pitch than others may be able to afford. Even complains if anyone new comes in, who's not even selling anything remotely similar to what they do! Been there and decided it wasn't worth the hassle with this particular vendor even tho my stock was nothing at all to do with what they sold.   - Do the feis orgnaisers get paid for the space they rent out? I have only seen the vendors at 2006 NANs (but I expected more than twere there) so I wouldn't know firsthand. ..     - Some feis organisers ask for a donation, others expect at least 10% of your takings, others ask for a flat fee....one feis I did expected �150 for the w/e. I spent over �900 on stock for that one, thinking we'd be in a prime position, but no, we were stuck out of the way and I took less than �100 Feis organiser wasn't too pleased when I could only offfer him �10, but not as miffed as myself who had paid for 2 nights in a hotel, petrol from over 200miles away, dancers feis entries and meals etc...I went home, as you can imagine, out of pocket and totally deflated :o( (NT) -- retired feis vendor, Sun, Feb 18 2007, 18:04:29
- Being completely practical for a moment, remember that for feis vendors this is their livelihood. If they travel 300 miles or so and spend two days on their stalls plus loading and unloading their vans, they need to make a profit on all of that or they go hungry. Now, if there are two similar vendors at an ordinary feis there will almost certainly not be enough customers to go around. Michael Flatley. Just got this off feisresults live commentary, the Man himself on stage. Delighted to see him on the road to full recovery. The recalls for the main Championship have been announced, but there has been a pause in the proceedings as MICHAEL FLATLEY himself has appeared on stage to present a cheque to An Coimisium which is going to be used to sponsor a complete set of new World trophies for this years championsips.         Yes I do. As with any employment the employee has an option to take out personal insurance cover, it isn't up to the employer to provide forms. It might cost, but in this situation it appears that it would have been justified. In addition it should be noted that employment law applies to this job just as any other so the addendum is not legally binding or enforceable. In such a situation there would be a case for constructive dismissal, and a lawyer would be happy to take on a big company. You seem to think these "kids" are different to the "kids" in normal jobs with unjust bosses. As a direct consequence, insurance policies are not applicable, as it is only in the case of sickness, redundancy, or loss of job that any payout would be made. Still with me? As regards collective bargaining or a group lawsuit, each and every dancer is an individual, and at appropriate times they are brought into rooms, separately, told to tear up existing contracts, and sign new ones, or they are out of work!         How patronising you are. Yes I understood fully. However, you do not understand what I said. There is always the option of insurance, you just have to approach a specialist broker, who works in the particular field (ANYTHING can be insured against for a price - eg rain on your wedding day) If they have signed a contract that keeps them "employed" but agrees to no wages then that agreement is illegal and therefore they are at liberty to just walk away and join another show. However if being in this show is more important to them than working with an honest employer then they have no-one but themselves to blame. I called them kids because the previous post did. If you really believe they are kids then the parents should ensure they are protected, just as they would if they got an office or factory job and were mistreated. Although they are not likely to be in Equity yet I think you would find they would help as this is the sort of thing they exist for.         Unfortunately you are well adrift of reality. In this part of the world there are standard employment protection policies for sale, none of which would cover the circumstances where they remain 'technically' in employment. Your second point vis-a-vis the forms relate to forms confirming they are no longer employed, and not insurance forms as you [Mis]interpreted. They need these forms along with relevant P45 equivilents to claim under the terms of applicable poilicies. Apologies about supposedly patronising you, but in the end you still don't understand!         I'm sorry but I am in the insurance game, and can assure that a Lloyds underwriter can insure you against your contract being suspended in this way. They are not unemployed, (hence ASU policies not valid) but rather in suspension. I would assume it is fairly common with the shows, so might already be an "off the shelf" product, but if not an underwriter would cover the risk.         Just to weigh into this .. can I ask a question that may or may not clarify things for me..being in Australia does mean we have different laws so I might not have it right anyway. If the dancer is not getting paid because the show is not playing, but they are not free to find alternate employ during this 'standdown period' does that mean that they are getting a percentage of the show takings? I mean that either they are on wages (weekly pay for work) or salary (weekly pay regardless of hours) or commission based (so they get paid only if they perform) or do they have annual leave etc to draw upon which would also be paid (or is that only in Aus?)..         insurance is not my question..that is something that personally I feel everyone should have anyway... you insure your house & contents, your car etc why not insure your income too, so for me that is a no brainer anyway. I just can't understand what sort of pay schedule these dancers are on. I am sure that whichever way you look at it they are not as aware of their circumstances as we would all hope, however, they did sign a contract and they should have been aware of what that contract meant. If they didn't understand it they should have had a lawyer or someone read it for them before they signed it. Most countries as far as I am aware would have a free legal service of some sort that probably would have loved to have had a look at the contract before they signed. Even university / college law professors would look at it for them.
