there's an interesting debate on voy 60473 about when the 6 month transfer ban begins & ends for a dancer. The rule says a TC cannot enter a dancer for a comp (not that a dancer cannot compete) until 6months have elapsed from the date the Regional council receives notice that you have moved. In theory this means that if the entry cut-off date is within this period (AI's, GBs or BNs for example) you cannot be entered, even though the comp takes place after 6 months. - On a similar note has anyone else considered that because the Southern Regionals are very early this year, any dancer that transferred in the SR after the Worlds (which is usually when it happens) is banned to a date well beyond the Regional Oireachtas, so is effectively also banned from next years Worlds, even if they medalled this year. Surely not the purpose of the rule? I don't know if this actually affects any dancers but it was (NT) -- something to consider, Sun, Apr 29 2007, 23:43:22

I would really like to know if people really think that judging is corrupt in ID. If it is what is the point of it. - When my dd started Id I never heard of corruption, but as she got into Championship, I heard it more and more and to be honest I just couldn't understand what was going on. But to be honest at every competition depending on the adjs you know whos' won whether they are the best on the day or not. - Any competition where the judging is subjective you will have 'fixing' or just dodgy results whether it dancing, sycronised swimming, skating, showing dogs,showing goldfish or showing garden veg.   - I know what you mean about wondering why people bother to "fix" results. The only thing that I can see is that the ID world is a relatively small community and I think there are a lot of "favours" going on. For example if an adjudicator is freindly with a particular teacher they may place that teacher's dancers higher. Or on the flip side of that if an adjudicator has a particularly bad relationship with a particular teacher maybe they would be inclined to place their dancers lower. I don't have any direct experience of this it's just an observation but it seems to me that who you know inthe ID world or who you dance for can be quite important!     - I think that many of the times it may not be favours as you call it but as the adjudicatos are friends they are more aware of the dancers in the other school. As we all know the standard in most age groups is excellent and very close and sometimes all that is required is some adjudicator to remember you for whatever reason. Going by what I read on a few boards it seems that the overall results were pretty fair and mostly right. maybe a few surprises, but not too many big shock results. - I thought the judges were spread so far across the big stage that it made it difficult for them to see everything, especially what was happening at the other end of the stage if they were sitting in the last two seats. - personally now that competitive irish dancing is practiced worldwide, I think the worlds should be shared right round the world... they can do it for other sports ( just had swimming worlds in Melbourne) so why not for dance? ....I know that alot of Australian dancers sure would appreciate it being 'downunder' every so often too. Certainly is a valuable discussion that might actually be worth discussing. I am interested to see what the opinions of others would be. - overall I think it's a great idea, this may have been said before but as each country already has it own very big comp, ie: nans, all irelands, GBs, ect it makes sense that the 'Worlds' are hosted by different countries in turn. Possible big plus for uk/ire families is new open skies policy that allows airlines to run budget flights on transatlantic runs.Australians, Americans do all the running across the globe up to now so I dont think it's too much to ask that we occassionally take a trip and play in their backyard. - Traditionally the Worlds were always held in Ireland, the home of irish dancing. After CLRG agreed to let it go to Glasgow in 2202, this really opened the championships up to the rest of the world. If they can allow it to go outwith Ireland to one country, then they have no reason against not allowing it to go to other countries where ID is practised. I for one couldn't afford to go when it goes to USA however I believe it is a World event and should therefore be allowed all over the World. Why should dancers from the same countries have to fork out every year for flights/hotels etc? Might put it out of our reach, but it will put it within reach of many local dancers who are unable to travel to UK. Good luck to them and enjoy the experience. - I know there was one about the Mos school that ws deleted. To be honest it seems that there are so many people ou there who knows more about certain schools that the parents who attends theses schools. Hi my DD has been dancing for the last 12 months and really enjoys it. The only thing is she is finding it very difficult to keep her shoulders back and straight. Does any body have any tips or advice we could use?

- is she looking at the floor while she dances? looking down, even with just your eyes not even your whole head, can throw a dancer off kilt and make them hunch.... my neice also had similar problem as she was not kkeping her arms straight... seemed to follow through to her shoulders.... hope that helps. - It's early days yet. When my dd started she was concertrating so much on the steps her carriage wnet. When she mastered that something else went. - my dd often seems to move her head to the side, specially when she is doing cuts, i assume she gets marked down for this when she competes, i tell her to think like the string is going through the top of her head and pulling her up tall, any hints? - The easiest way to stop this is practice in front of a mirror - we bought a cheap mirror on a stand & dd put it in what ever room she was dancing in - she could look in the mirror & see her mistakes without looking down, took a month to stop the looking down without the mirror - she now teaches little ones & tells them to practice at home in front of a mirror. Know several big schools that have dance classes in mirrored rooms for same reason (NT) -- It works really well & quickly, Mon, Apr 02 2007, 21:08:57
- she may not even realise that she does it... we video our dancers 'trying their best' then play it back to them so they can see what we see. .. then they try it again conscious of the fact that they have to address XX issue... has helped so far, and the little ones just love to see themselves on film..lol.. personally not a fan of mirrors in the studio - little ones tend to be distracted by their own reflection and seem to'go off with the fairies'.. without mirrors they focus more.... mirrors tend to work better for home practices... but thats just been our experiences. I need to have a rant. We made a bad decision to attend St Bernadettes fesi. Don't get me wrong nice venue. Weird results in many age groups especially solo results. However in one of the age groups the Highly recommended 14 dancers in their solo results. That was after it was pointed out that 14 of these dancers hadn't placed at all. What were these people thinking? Would it have been so hard to work out the oher 14 palces? The dance Drama was beautiful. - Speaking from the other end of the spectrum my young dancer is in beginner and primary and we really enjoyed this feis despite the late running. The older gentleman who gave out the results on sunday in the sports hall really made the kids feel special. Especially letting the winner read their own number out via the mic. Our first Feis of the year, as a begginer we also had to forgo the wig here (downunder) my dd danced well AND she placed in all her 5 dances. two 2nds, two 4ths and a 7th (she tripped over her own foot!). she is very pleased and i am an even prouder mum. all the begginers looked very nice with their hair long and natural or curled gently as i did for my dd. bit fiddly but the end result was good. new (cheap) tiara and some fancy clips (also cheap) to finish it off and she looked a million dollars. -- no wigs, Sun, Mar 25 2007, 12:39:38 [11]

  - I feel for you. We don't compete so we don't have to adhere to the rules (yet) but our little dancers looove to get dressed up. The whole Cinderella image is how one Mum put it. I don't see the need for full wigs on the littlies, but think thta bun wigs or even hairpieces look nice, neat and not to over the top. So far as solo dresses.. I think the 'basic' is going to take some of the glitz out of the beginner kids, but it will INSPIRE them to work harder to make it up to the next level.   - Not even the dressmakers on the dressmakers board seem to know for sure, but our best guess is less applique and more traditional knotwork.. like the dresses used to be before the 90s?? or even before the heavily embroidered velvet champ dresses?? ... does that make sense? More about the dancing than the dress is the idea - also means that dancers have to 'earn' their dresses...which is not too bad an idea in itself. We need more kids getting into dance, and having to fork out for a $1000 dress for a 7-8 yr old is way more than most average families can afford. Oh, and how often do you see dresses advertised as near new because DD gave up before they could wear the dress?? I find that if people see a girl in a fabulous dress they expect that she is a fabulous champion dancer - then she just looks foolish if she can't follow through. - Off top of my head, I would say that rocks, crosskeys, kickouts, over 2,3s are traditional. Steps like toe work. bicycle jumps and maybe butterfly jumps are less traditional.     - To do crosskeys you start off by crossing the feet, so that outside of foot is against the outside of other foot and then you somehow have to twist it back round the foot very fast and close to the floor so it ends up back round the right way! Looks fantastic when done right but last time I saw them was when I danced so that is going back some years now but the rule book encourages TC to continue to teach them! TC tried to teach dd but to no success (if anyone has any better tips please give!!) Such a shame, would love them in her steps! Going back to butterflies, although they have been around now for some years I wouldn't class them as traditional, copied from ballet, but very lovely all the same. - hey Storm..we call them jump-cross-keys.... start on your toes with one foot in front of other and make a little jump straight up, then the cross - where your heels go outwards and touch the ground.. then the keys is to bring your feet back to start position, but the other foot is now in front...... does that sound like what you were thinking of? How does your dancer feel about competing when many of their top competitors are missing? My dancer is now not wanting to go to a feis unless they think all the 'big names' will attend because she does not consider it worthwhile! I like to go just for the practice. Does anyone else meet with resistance about this situation? - Good on her! And she is saving you money!! I know of world champ in our region who literally only goes to a few feises coming up to worlds and a couple of majors a year. I suppose there are some dancers that feel their time is better spent in lesson than feis and vice versa as there are a lot of top dancers that seem to feis every weekend. Personally, I like an easy ride for my kids which I know is wrong but then they are not at top level.
