It is with great regret that I have closed the MAIDs board.

It would seem that some people are more interested in trying to 'out' the Mods than concentrating on what's actually going on in the World of ID.

I neither have the time nor inclination to be arguing with people any more. I have a life that goes beyond ID now, thankfully.

The board has, in the past years, changed dramatically, after those who set it up, with all good intentions, were hounded into obscurity.

I apologise to the die hards who tried to make it work, but it has just proved to be too stressful for me to try and keep a handle on it of late, especially when I was offline for days last week and was still accused of things I had no control over.

So thanks to everyone for their support, but it's really time to get on with things other than deleting vitriol from people who should know better!

- There appears to be a lot of pressure on the Mods of various forum in an attempt to get them to close down. Why anyone needs to "out" the Mods I can't understand, as their anonymity is purely to protect them from the politics of Irish dance, and personal attacks. At one time the mod of the UK board was accused of being me, in an attempt to prove that the forum was biased in my favour. In fact most of the forum are truly independent, and moderated with a light touch, simply to protect people from nasty attacks and possible lible or slander. If we lose the forum we'll be taking a step back into the dark ages before the Internet, where dancers were isolated from each other and the poor behaviour of certain AD's and TCRG was kept out of sight, with no-one knowing what was happening. - As Irishdaz said, being able to share and chat with others in ID has been one of the most positive advances in ID and that is something none of us want to loose. It is due to the majority of the board users, who provide valuable information, often with humour and mostly their great support of each other that makes running the boards worthwhile. As a parent of a dancer it has been a God send to know that other parents and their children have been there, done that, and lived to sell the t-shirts. A convicted paedophile, who admits to his past, is deported for violating the child protection act. His conviction means he cannot work with children or be involved with them again, he ignored this advice, and so is deported. He then starts up a new organisation in the country he's currently living in, advertises on here for teachers (without telling people who they will be working for) - continues to run workshops, competitions and adult classes. But this is all ok apparently, because WIDA 'is not just Sean Gavan', it's a whole organisation and the convicted paedophile is not allowed to be left alone with children. And Irish Daz is happy to advertise the organisation, because Sean has been very up front with him about his past (lucky Daz). Irish Daz also feels that the organisation contains a great deal of innocent teachers and children, who should not be punished for their leader's crimes.

What a joke.

If our prime minister was a convicted paedophile, his MPs might well be innocent, but they would replace their leader. If a head teacher, or a school governor, was a convicted paedophile - the school would continue with a change of leadership. This organisation should continue with a change in president.

Irish daz says (and I quote): 'maybe he does have something to offer the world of irish dance'. This has not been thought out carefully enough. It's not just about whether he's alone with children, or whether he's president or active teacher in the organisation, it's about the statement you are making. He's present at competitions and workshops where children are performing - how would you feel about his thoughts towards those children - or indeed what he does with the photos after the event. I certainly would not want a photo of my daughter up on his wall at home - would you? Paedophilia is a sexual preference - it's not a mistake, or a one off - a paedophile sees children in the same way we might eye up Brad Pitt or Kelly Brook. By supporting the organisation, you are allowing him access to a whole load of child pin ups - on a regular basis. It's not always the actions parents need to be worried about.

You say that his former class were very supportive of him, raised a whole load of money to fund his defence. Just because he is a paedophile, doesn't mean he doesn't have the ability to build relationships with people. They might well have supported him - but that's more than likely because they didn't believe the conviction.

The tone of your posts on here suggest that you feel that the man is sorry for what he's done so we should give him a second chance. I agree, the organisation should not be punished, but until they insist on a change in leadership - they are opening their children up to danger. You might argue there is danger everywhere. Very true. But we must do our utmost to avoid it - if a man walked into a feis with 'paedophile' written on his t-shirt, he would be asked to leave, would he not? Like I said before, the risk here is what is being promoted by continuing to allow this man to run an organisation.

parents and teachers who have said they are ok with it are misguided. Have you wondered what's crossing his mind when he sits and watches your son/daughter dance at a feis?

We can't always spot a paedophile, but where it is obvious, they should not be encouraged or allowed to be involved in an organisation which is based around children. It's illegal.

If you are supporting this organisation, please make a stand and rally for a new leader. You would not be able to live with yourself if this person reoffended.

Let me make it clear - I do not support any paedophile. However, I am trying to separate my own strong feelings about an individual from the group he formed. I 100% agree he should be more open about being president, and on the original website he was. I have no idea why he doesn't do so still. If TCRG had not affiliated to WIDA it would not now exist. As it does I support them as teachers. I cannot do that without accepting the federation, even if I do not like the person at the top. Maybe one day he will be driven out and WIDA will continue without him as its head. It won't get big enough for that without being allowed to advertise, so I believe for the long term good of ID we have to accept matters not being quite as we'd like in the short term. I am not going to take part in this any further as I sense a tone that may lead to further mis-interpretation of my motives. Is there a rule about pupils taking classes? Just wondering as our teacher went away and our class was covered by a boy from another location of the school? This has happend many times in our school and wandered if it was aloud?! Honesty and integrity in posting results at feisianna -- TheThinker (Wanted: honest opinions), Wed, Aug 22 2007, 13:16:27 [12]
Some questions have come to my mind after having driven eight hours to another feis in the "Deep South", only to be dissappointed once again by the results (After placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in all of my dances at the last few feisianna, I only got one 4th place in only one, out of five dances at this "Deep South" feis). This was quite a blow to what I am used to placing, especially given the fact that there were even less competitors in my competitions at this particular feis than other recent feisianna in which I placed my usual. When the scores came in, all of the first places were given to dancers from schools WITHIN that particular region of the Southern Region (I am in the Southern Region as well, however, I am a few states away from the host school, therefore, I am not from a school WITHIN that specific area of the Southern Region.) I even overheard one of my competitors say that she got first place in the two dances where she needed the first places. One of those dances, I was almost sure I would place well, however, I didn't even place at all. This was a shock since I and others noticed the adjudicators' reactions when I danced. I say all of this to ask: Who takes the scores from the adjudicators' hands? And who is responsible for entering the scores into the computer (in this case, they used the software program where the results are printed out on paper and taped to the results wall)? Are these perhaps "feis moms and dads" from local and surrounding schools? How would I be guaranteed that the placements the adjudicator initially gave me are the same placements that show up on the printed results paper? For that matter, there can ALWAYS be an error, whether it is an intentional error or not. Right? So, after all the long, hard practices on my own, the expensive solo dress, and the expensive trip, I am now disappointed that I did so poorly at a feis where I had less competitors than I am used to, after placing very well at other recent feisianna. Has anyone else ever questioned the integrity of the people running the feisianna? Or should we all just trust everyone involved and never question things, even though we have worked so hard to get where we are? It just seems so strange that the last couple of years, I have tried out one or two feisianna in the summer that have been in the "Deep South". Every one of them has been the same disappointment for me, the same outcome (where I had just placed well at other feisianna, then I go down there, and can't even place with smaller competitions - and the same thing happens to others that have done the same thing from my school). I even wrote an email to the host school, but never got a response from them. Interesting. What are your thoughts? Does anyone else see the potential of human error at feisianna, whether intentional or just an honest mistake? And should we trust things when feis moms and dads are usually the ones voluteering to copy the actual scores from the adjudicators? Why can't we see the adjucator's raw score sheet? Am I alone in questioning these things? I just think there should be no question left in our minds about fairness and honesty. I do not want to be involved in a sport only to learn there are dishonest things going on behind the scenes. I am not accusing anyone, just questioning, because we don't know what goes on after our scores leave the adjudicators' hands. What do you think?

- Is there just the possibility that although the numbers are smaller taht you are competing against dancers who may just be better than you. If it is happening at more than one feis in this particular area, this would be the most obvious answer.     - If this is the case I do not believe that the organisers and helpers will be changing the results, if they were found to do this they could be banned from being part of An Coimmission for life. - My thoughts are that you are probably at best an average dancer. And with all average dancers, you will have some "on" days and some "off" days. - Most schools have styles and when they host a feis they tend to hire adj. with similar styles. If your school style is different, it is reasonable to assume you might not do as well. - While there is frequently data entry error there are usually quality control measures taken in the tabulations room to catch these such aas multiple people checking results entered against the handwritten results. So you would have to get an entire room to agree to falsify results and keep quiet about. Not gonna happen. There is also the possibility that the ADJ writes down a score in the wrong slot not corresponding to the dancer intended, writes down an incorrect competitor number, or ranks them different than the raw score would indicate. These are taken back to the ADJ for them to correct before posting. I suspect that your perfomance has more to do with travel, expectations and judges being hand picked by the host school to prefer their style than fraud or even human error. If you suspect human error ask your TCRG to request a copy of the adjudicators score sheet or for the hosting teacher to check the scores for your TCRG -- deep south, Thu, Aug 23 2007, 4:37:40
  - As a mom of a "deep south" dancer I find this post a bit offensive. My dd is in Prelim and "feishes" in Texas and the surrounding states. Let me tell you the quality and level of her competition are outstanding. There are some awesome dancers in the SR and especially the "deep south" (think Catie Foley). If you didn't do well, then you need to look to yourself as the cause. My dd got 6 firsts at a feis in November in OPW, when she went to the next feis in Jan she got one first.     - Carriage is very, very, important, it actually makes up to 25 out of the 100 marks available from an ADCRG and is one of the 4 areas they specifically mark. There's nothing more likely to spoil a good dancer than their body wobbling all over the place, or bending forward every time they leap etc. It makes them look really untidy as a dancer, and draws your attention away from the feet. It has the same effect as flapping arms, or waving hands.
