• Is there a rule about pupils taking classes? Just wondering as our teacher went away and our class was covered by a boy from another location of the school? This has happend many times in our school and wandered if it was aloud?!   • not sure if it's allowed or not, but it could have problems regarding insurance if the person taking the class isn't a qualified teacher, But if the person taking the class is running it ok and the children are getting their time fairly, I would think it may be better then having to miss the class completely.     • Comission rules are that a qualified teacher must be in attendance at all classes, ie not a pupil or trainee teacher, unless in case of emergency, when it may be possible to allow a senior pupil or trainee teacher to takea class.   • Sounds like you want to make it pretty clear which school you're talking about. I would say, if you're worried that rule breaking is affecting your child then act by going to your regional council or speaking to your teacher. I don't really understand what difference it makes to you and how posting on this board can help you?   • This is strictly against the rules. Contact your regional council, as unless they know about it they can't bring pressure to bear on rulebreakers to make sure they stick to the rules. • Honesty and integrity in posting results at feisianna -- TheThinker (Wanted: honest opinions), Wed, Aug 22 2007, 13:16:27 [12]
  Some questions have come to my mind after having driven eight hours to another feis in the "Deep South", only to be dissappointed once again by the results (After placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in all of my dances at the last few feisianna, I only got one 4th place in only one, out of five dances at this "Deep South" feis). This was quite a blow to what I am used to placing, especially given the fact that there were even less competitors in my competitions at this particular feis than other recent feisianna in which I placed my usual. When the scores came in, all of the first places were given to dancers from schools WITHIN that particular region of the Southern Region (I am in the Southern Region as well, however, I am a few states away from the host school, therefore, I am not from a school WITHIN that specific area of the Southern Region.) I even overheard one of my competitors say that she got first place in the two dances where she needed the first places. One of those dances, I was almost sure I would place well, however, I didn't even place at all. This was a shock since I and others noticed the adjudicators' reactions when I danced. I say all of this to ask: Who takes the scores from the adjudicators' hands? And who is responsible for entering the scores into the computer (in this case, they used the software program where the results are printed out on paper and taped to the results wall)? Are these perhaps "feis moms and dads" from local and surrounding schools? How would I be guaranteed that the placements the adjudicator initially gave me are the same placements that show up on the printed results paper? For that matter, there can ALWAYS be an error, whether it is an intentional error or not. Right? So, after all the long, hard practices on my own, the expensive solo dress, and the expensive trip, I am now disappointed that I did so poorly at a feis where I had less competitors than I am used to, after placing very well at other recent feisianna. Has anyone else ever questioned the integrity of the people running the feisianna? Or should we all just trust everyone involved and never question things, even though we have worked so hard to get where we are? It just seems so strange that the last couple of years, I have tried out one or two feisianna in the summer that have been in the "Deep South". Every one of them has been the same disappointment for me, the same outcome (where I had just placed well at other feisianna, then I go down there, and can't even place with smaller competitions - and the same thing happens to others that have done the same thing from my school). I even wrote an email to the host school, but never got a response from them. Interesting. What are your thoughts? Does anyone else see the potential of human error at feisianna, whether intentional or just an honest mistake? And should we trust things when feis moms and dads are usually the ones voluteering to copy the actual scores from the adjudicators? Why can't we see the adjucator's raw score sheet? Am I alone in questioning these things? I just think there should be no question left in our minds about fairness and honesty. I do not want to be involved in a sport only to learn there are dishonest things going on behind the scenes. I am not accusing anyone, just questioning, because we don't know what goes on after our scores leave the adjudicators' hands. What do you think?

  • Is there just the possibility that although the numbers are smaller taht you are competing against dancers who may just be better than you. If it is happening at more than one feis in this particular area, this would be the most obvious answer. Though you may be one of the best dancers in your own immediate area, you may not be quite as good as the ones in this area. (NT) -- Work harder and you may see results improve.       • If this is the case I do not believe that the organisers and helpers will be changing the results, if they were found to do this they could be banned from being part of An Coimmission for life. It could be that they only employ adjudicators they know will like the style of the home dancers thus a heavy biased in adjudication that can seem to be wrong. I know some feisanna in USA seem to bring back many adjudicators year after year. Would be nice if they had to change the full panel each as we normally do in the UK.   • My thoughts are that you are probably at best an average dancer. And with all average dancers, you will have some "on" days and some "off" days. And with most average dancers, they usually accept their placings and return home to practice and improve. They do not throw around childish accusations and look for excuses.   • Most schools have styles and when they host a feis they tend to hire adj. with similar styles. If your school style is different, it is reasonable to assume you might not do as well. The question is, have you had these same adj. at other feiseanna and placed higher? If not, please don't blame the feis. Feis workers are too busy to be this devious.   • While there is frequently data entry error there are usually quality control measures taken in the tabulations room to catch these such aas multiple people checking results entered against the handwritten results. So you would have to get an entire room to agree to falsify results and keep quiet about. Not gonna happen. There is also the possibility that the ADJ writes down a score in the wrong slot not corresponding to the dancer intended, writes down an incorrect competitor number, or ranks them different than the raw score would indicate. These are taken back to the ADJ for them to correct before posting. I suspect that your perfomance has more to do with travel, expectations and judges being hand picked by the host school to prefer their style than fraud or even human error. If you suspect human error ask your TCRG to request a copy of the adjudicators score sheet or for the hosting teacher to check the scores for your TCRG -- deep south, Thu, Aug 23 2007, 4:37:40
    • As a mom of a "deep south" dancer I find this post a bit offensive. My dd is in Prelim and "feishes" in Texas and the surrounding states. Let me tell you the quality and level of her competition are outstanding. There are some awesome dancers in the SR and especially the "deep south" (think Catie Foley). If you didn't do well, then you need to look to yourself as the cause. My dd got 6 firsts at a feis in November in OPW, when she went to the next feis in Jan she got one first.   • Errors DO happen, but I would never think they were intentional. Have seen competitor numbers transposed on the posters, 2nd & 3rd places flip-flopped, and DD was not announced as placing when she had.     • The poster suffers from "SR Entitlement Syndrome". Too many dancers from the other regions come down to the SR and just expect that they will beat all these "yahoos" down in the "deep south". I know you state you are in the SR but Maryland is in the SR so those dancers probably do a lot of feiseanna in the MAR and MW too. I think even some of our more northern SR members expect that if they go to TX, LA, OK, or ARK they will be guaranteed 1sts. Sorry to burst your bubble but that just isn't always true. The problem wasn't with the tabulators, the SR, or cheating. The problem was with YOU on the DAY of this particular feis. Go home, practice and then try again.   • I would say bad or shaky carriage mostly,especially on jumps. moving arms and hand gestures are a very close second.. Seen many a very good dancer moving hands, (NT) -- observer, Sat, Aug 04 2007, 4:30:29
    • I've never really seen carriage as a big issue but thats JMO. I mean, if a dancer has fantastic footwork, turnout, trebles, rhythm, lift then to me they are so much more important than if they are a big shaky, or slightly leaning or hand is wobbling, that to me is very minor but maybe thats the difference between 1st & 5th place for instance, but obviously I am no expert!       • Carriage is very, very, important, it actually makes up to 25 out of the 100 marks available from an ADCRG and is one of the 4 areas they specifically mark. There's nothing more likely to spoil a good dancer than their body wobbling all over the place, or bending forward every time they leap etc. It makes them look really untidy as a dancer, and draws your attention away from the feet. It has the same effect as flapping arms, or waving hands. The top half of the body should always be vertical and unmoving, as it then makes the dancing look effortless and floaty (NT) -- watch Ciara Sexton as an example, Sun, Aug 05 2007, 13:16:02
        • Living in Midlands I've had pleasure of watching Ciara on a number of occasions & yes her carriage was amazing, if you couldn't see below her waist you'd thinkg she was standing waiting for a bus! I guess what I am trying to say is that my preference is a dancer with amazing dancing ability with slightly off carriage than perfect carriage but off rhythm or with mediocre dancing. When you master both, then you get to be a world champ over like Ciara but for me its dancing 1st carriage 2nd. My son has fantastic posture & carriage but his footwork - arrghh!   • Every adjudicator will have something different they look for, but for most people who have danced it will be lack musicality that would really stand out. You find yourself tapping your foot, then stamping it and then your upper body starts to try to get the dancer to listen too.   One day a Hobbit came to pass. He wasn't very important, but he knew right from wrong, and was the only Hobbit in the whole of Middle Earth who was prepared to say the name of the coven out loud in the land of Web.
  
  Seeing that the Pixie was behaving so badly he said "Enough, I challenge the Elven Lords to stop this Pixie from treating all the little sprites so badly.
  
  At first the Elven Lords were keen to protect their friend but soon they found that more and more sprites, emboldened by the steadfastness of the Hobbit, began to rebel against the nasty Pixie and his master, the evil witch of the West. Eventually rather than risk a rebellion, they decided that enough really was enough.
  
  The little Pixie was banished from the realm of Middle Earth, back to the West from whence his evildoings sprang, and the last time he was seen, he was down in the Gutter.
  
  The moral of the story is don't tread on the little people on the way up the ladder, as they might just knock you back down again, and it's a long crawl back out of the gutter.

  I wish to protest the planned M3 motorway through the ancient grounds of Tara. As you are aware, expert archaeologists in Ireland and internationally have pointed out that Tara is not just constituted by the actual hill, but also by the surrounding landscape, which is extraordinarily rich in archaeological monuments. This is precisely the area the planned M3 will cut through, only 1 km from the hill itself.
  
  You are also no doubt aware that the Tara landscape is recognised as a site of not only Irish, but world importance. In particular, it holds a significant place in European cultural heritage. • NAN splits. In an ideal world the competition would be split totally at random, so that dancers would not be with the same girls year after year. Sadly, if it was, people would say it was being fiddled to keep girl A apart from B,C, & D to ensure that girl A wins the split. Splitting by Dates of birth was purely a way of doing this in which no-one could dispute the reasoning. A few stray errors really should make no difference, and those shouting loudest about this are probably concerned that they are now in a group that they perceive to be "the hardest" which is probably not the case. -- my thoughts inside, Sun, Jun 24 2007, 22:15:22 [6]
  Perhaps they should split the groups totally randomly the night before. Dancers or their TCRG could queue up and on production of their ID card be asked to press a button on a random number generator (like a bingo/lotto machine) to generate either an A or a B to select the split. Or it could actually be their competitor number for the comp, with all odd numbers being A and all evens being B (or something similar). The second option would mean that the program would be without numbers, further lessoning any chance of AD's and TC's being accused of conspiring together to mark dance 140 well.
  The split/competitor number info would then be entered into the Computer on the spot as their agreed competition split. I'm sure that the software used could cope with sorting the dancers by a column with an A or B column, so that all other details can still be entered before the event.
  There could be no suggestion of cheating as no-one could influence the outcome. Any "harder group" would just be the luck of the draw.
  Panel X would be listed to judge split A Heavy round & Split B light round, with Panel Y doing the opposite.
  The recall should be fixed at 30% of each split, but these should then be combined into a joint Recall, representing 30% of the total, and a number usually far in excess of 50 dancers. I would then suggest that a totally separate adjudicators panel (panel Z) then judges the combined recall. Alternatively panels X and Y could combine to give a 6 way score for the recall.
  Agreed this would mean a slightly larger recall, but would put all of the top dancers fairly competing against each other, with the result being only one champion, the TRUE champion. It would reduce the number of Worlds qualifiers by 2 as you currently have 3 for the first 10 + 1 per 10, meaning that because we have two comps we have an extra 2 for the first 10 in the second group. This would make it the same as the other secondary qualifiers (GB's AI's etc)

        • it is obvious that you have to split for the first rounds. My dd danced in a comp of 300, split 150/150. If they had danced ALL 300 in one comp it would have taken at least 4 hours per round. The AD's would need a lunch break so that means 9 hours. Add best part of an hour to collate and check the scores, and announce the recall. Assuming an 8.00am start that takes us to 6.00pm. Recall of 30% (say 100 inc ties) would take about 2 and a half hours. Add at least half hour for scores etc. So results "might" be ready at 9.00pm. Presentation would possibly finish at 10/10.30, assuming no glitches. (NT) -- too long a day, Thu, Jun 28 2007, 11:27:47

• Guys, the timetable for the Solent feis and the FULL details for the Southern Region Council grades feis are now on Irish dancer, my thanks to Des for sending them to me. The SERC rades feis is asking all dancers to refrain from wearing the fancy dresses and only wear a skirt & blouse. I wonder if it will catch on?   • Fantastic idea, I for one will definitely be supporting this feis and for the rest of us mums who complain about the dresses and wigs lets hope you all support this feis as well, because I'm sure if they have brilliant support it'll run again and again.   • Personally I'm delighted to support this feis in the spirit it's being run, Will be interesting to see how many dancers accross the grades will be brave enough to go without the fancy dress. I hope every parent who every shook their heads at the crazy prices dresses were costing, as well as some styles, will support this feis and encourage their dancers to try the natural look. Remember it's only one feis out of the whole year where you can relax and not worry about dresses, wigs, make up or even tan, what a really pleasurable thought. Just wondering why, I thought reel, slip jig, heavy jig and hornpipe would be same or very similar quality for all championship dancers.   • Not all schools concentrate on all the dances at the same time. My DD has chosen reel & hornpipe for the BN & that is all she is working on at the moment, plus her set dance, which is in jig time.           • They completely messed up the results and called all the wrong things on stage. Afterwards a parent reaslised that they had missed all the grid marks off for one abjudicator on some children which changed the whole championship result, it mostly affected a little girl who had been called as top 5 and wasn't and another girl who was top 5 but had been called as about 10th. The solo results also seemed to be a right mess. They didn't announce their mistake or re-do the presentations so it was a complete farce. (NT) -- Mum of U13 involved, Mon, Jun 18 2007, 22:09:30

  • I noticed that mod on the other board has been asked to delete the posts about the disgusting behaviour of a particular dancer. Fair play to the mod people were allowed to have their say. But I'd like to say that last week when one of their dancers didn't get what was apparently rightly deserved and they ranted on about it, the post wasn't asked to be deleted the mod did this herself from what I can gather.     • From what I understand everyone has the right to request removal of posts and it is up to the moderators if they consider the request a reasonable one. Obviously this was the situation at the time, as over time the Mods of that board have been very fair and have tried to allow everyone to voice their views, and remember they have kept that board available for many years because of their judgement. • How stressed are you. Anyone read about the mother who abandoned her two daughters aged 9 and 6 by a busy roadside, after a row because her daughter forgot her dancing shoes on the way to class. It doesn't say what type of dancing they do, but even when I'm ready to strangle mine the worst I've done is turn round and just gone home and not talk for a couple of hours.
