| Subject: Gowns...In looking at the gowns of the top 15, I am going to guess that most are very expensive Stephen Yearick, Carlos Alberto or Tony Bowls gowns. My question is can a girl really be competitive at Miss Texas USA anymore in a less expensive gown? Be realistic here, please. With our economy, many girls cannot afford to spend $4000-6000 on a gown. I have alwyas been impressed that the winner of Houston gets a $3500 gift certificate to Elizabeth Anthony. That certainly gives her a big headstart. |

- Supposedly Christine Friedel won in a $30 gown or something like that. I think a girl could win in an inexpensive gown, as long as it didn't look inexpensive. It has to look great on her and she has to feel great in it. If wearing a cheap gown will make her self conscious, then it probably won't work. (NT) -- DJS, 07/ 1/08 12:58:33pm
- Sommer won in a $700 gown and an interview dress from Dillard's junior dept. -- Outside, 07/ 1/08 4:26:30pm
- It just proves its the girl and not the gown. Sommer is gorgeous. (NT) -- the new teen Guzman needs to hide her lack of looks with a good wardrobe, 07/ 1/08 4:50:02pm
- Tahnae Tarkenton's gown was definetely off the rack (NT) -- Honestly a cute girl but how she made the top 5 in that dress is a mystery to me. I wouldn't wear that dress to Miss Iowa, 07/ 1/08 7:54:39pm
- I really believe a girl can win with an inexpensive gown. All you need is stage presence, a good body for a gown to flatter, a great walk and a good dose of confidence. You can throw a ton of money at a designer, that don't mean you'll get good taste. I've seen just as many inexpensive yet tasteful evening gowns as tacky high priced ones. A hefty price tag does not guarantee good taste. (NT) -- Meemaw, 07/ 1/08 9:21:52pm
- Meemaw, I believe that is true in most cases... but it really seems that in Texas, you have to use the sponsors and Elizabeth Anthony gowns do not come cheap. It seems like it's become more of the norm -- look at the girls who regularly make top 15 in Texas. They all seem to have thousands of dollars to throw into a new, custom gown for every local and state pageant each year. (NT) -- Lubbock girl, 07/ 1/08 11:58:31pm
- So should the girls who can't afford the expensive custom gown just give up? (NT) -- ???, 07/ 2/08 12:27:25am
- Yes, but they're just following an established pattern. I guarantee you, if Valerie Pro had picked out a tasteful, inexpensive dress instead of wasting $18,000 on a Christmas ornament, she still would have made the top 15 and finished no worse than she did on Sunday. I'll tell you what, I'd like to see a couple of Top 5 fixtures do that and NOT make the cut. There'd be some splainin' to do! (NT) -- Meemaw, 07/ 2/08 12:35:53am
- Julie at Elizabeth Anthony will gladly meet any budget. I know of VERY competitive and successful contestants that have spent $1,000 or less on dresses. Ask her to call you with sales or just tell her your budget. She is great to work with. By the way, did Valerie Pro spend $18,000 on that red gown (Meemaw referred to this in her post)??? If so, oh my! (NT) -- Miss Frugel, 07/ 2/08 12:42:20am
- Cassie Meyer's year as 1st runner up she wore a $700 Jovani (NT) -- ... but she had Rupa add crystals to the bodice; stunning!, 07/ 2/08 7:19:42am
- Candace purchased her gown used and less than $1,000.00. And Christina's gown was a Yearick bought on SALE from Nordstrom's. She had already purchased it before Lubbuck Girl found it. So Christina was praying that no one would go look at them. (NT) -- girls you do not have to go broke over evening gowns to do good, 07/ 2/08 11:45:22am
- Grace is a wonderful person to deal with at St. Thomas - she is very attentive and has great follow-up. (NT) -- ., 07/ 2/08 8:02:09pm
- Speaking of gowns - I'm entering my state Teen USA pageant. Do the WINNERS of state pageants usually wear white, gold, or black gowns? I'm new & don't want to make a costly mistake. (NT) -- Please advise., 07/ 2/08 11:25:44pm
- Does anyone know who was wearing a gown from St. Thomas? I saw Tahnae's name, but i was wondering who else/ (NT) -- Thanks, 07/ 3/08 12:22:11am
- Capital of Texas' red dress was from St. Thomas. She wore it in Miss Austin and Miss Texas. (NT) -- ., 07/ 3/08 1:01:44pm
- Thanks for all the info on St. Thomas! I have been buying dresses from Elizabeth Anthony's but the last time was a disappointment because she really urged me to buy a dress that looked beautiful in the store but washed out on stage. Since she is the expert, I went with her advice rather than my gut. Big mistake! Based on the comments on this board, I am going to look into St. Thomas! (NT) -- That's what I love about this board!, 07/ 3/08 5:14:05pm
- With all this talk about pageant gown expenses; you have heard this before, “it is not the gown it is the girl in the gown.” I am a judge the first phase of the competition is INTERVIEW, I pay attention to her confidence or her uncertainty when speaking with me. Second phase is swimsuit did she pick a swimsuit that flatters her body type. Lastly, gown, this portion is all subjective. What I like the judge next to me might not like. The scores are tallied, top five are picked and the judges pick who they think should represent the state. Sure some of the gowns really pop that make that girl standout, but if she does not score high she and her fifteen thousand dollar gown are left standing in the back. - David's store blk. in Waco is small, but he has been taking some girls to market to pick out gowns..and not selling them for as much as you would find in other stores....one contestants worked with Tony Bowls to get her gown thru David and probably saved a lot of money. He does not mark them up as much. -- Outside, 07/ 4/08 10:11:30am

- Are these expensive gowns registered with the manufacturer to avoid duplicates? I am asking because my daughter tried on a gown at Elizabeth Anthony last year very similar if not the exact gown as the one SA is wearing in this photo only it was a different color. She didn't buy it, but I was wondering if there's an effort to avoid duplicate gowns for the same pageant. (NT) -- curious, 07/ 5/08 11:51:14am
- DAVID ISIN CONTACT WITH MISS LAREDO DESIGNER -- LILY, 07/ 8/08 7:06:00am
- Ladies, just know yourself and, like the posters above are saying, trust your gut! I began doing much better in pageants when I stopped listening to others as much and instead started listening to myself and what I felt good in. You know yourself better than anyone (well, except for your parents maybe) and you need to learn to trust yourself. Early in my pageant years I let my directors persude me to get a gown in a color that I KNEW wasn't right for me...but I told myself "well, they know more than I do." And I placed lower that year than ever. The same goes with sizes - you know your body. (NT) -- HDgal, 07/ 8/08 4:07:07pm
- A little more on St. Thomas - if there are two gowns by a designer (like Pinera) and you like the top of one gown and the bottom of another, they will call the designer to see if they can make the gown that way custom for you and they will usually be able to order in a different color. Grace is wonderful and very helpful. (NT) -- ., 07/14/08 1:49:58pm
- The thing that everyone forgets is that the gown must fit the person. You can pay hardly nothing or tons of money..if it is not right for your body and coloring its not going to do you justice no matter how much it costs. Think of the stage and lightning..body & height ..etc... -- Pag fan, 07/23/08 12:32:13am
- there were TEXAS AMERICA girls this year in the top 10 who had used Pineras from Miss America wardrobe swap, and one custom made by Ramon Guerrero and the 1st RU had an old prom dress! (NT) -- name, 07/26/08 1:21:02am
