Gown standouts:

Megan McAnelly (Capital of Texas), Ana Rodriguez (Central Texas), Kelsey Moore (El Paso), Angy Torres (Houston), Whitney Jarrett (North Arlington)

Megan looks so regal! I’m blown away at how much she has pulled herself together for this competition… and even though she’s worn that dress a million times it never gets old. Her only problem is her loosy goosy lackadaisical interview so if she pulled that together we could be looking at a top 5 contender.

My favorite dress of the night goes to Ana Rodriguez. I’ve been very disappointed with her choices in the past, but this year she has surpassed my expectations! Had she looked like this at Miss Austin I think the outcome would have been different.

Kelsey Moore keeps climbing up my list. Whoever said she might be one of the last 2 standing hit it spot on. Her hair is soft, makeup is natural, and I think she would be a knockout at Miss USA.

Angy’s choice in gown was pretty boring for me; however, she looked absolutely stunning. And I know it’s not the dress that wins it, but rather the girl in the dress.

Whitney Jarrett hasn’t been a standout for me thus far, but that blue really made her pop! I feel confident after seeing her in gown that she'll make the top 15.

Even though these girls are my gown standouts, they aren’t all in my personal top 5. The only 3 people I see as a lock for the top 5 is Houston, El Paso, and Central Texas. Again, this is just my opinion and has no bearing on the final outcome and isn’t said to upset people! I may be totally wrong and have no idea what I’m talking about, but this is just my opinion! To everyone who has asked if this is a first-hand account… I have not been there for prelims or swimsuit preview and have gone off pictures and past knowledge of these girls. I wasn’t planning on attending at all, but a group of friends had an extra ticket so I will be there this afternoon! Based on what my group has been telling me and what is already common knowledge, El Paso and Houston are definitely among the front runners.

Honorable Mentions:

Nicole Golyer (Cinco Ranch) Sarah Boehner (Park Cities), Ivette Vargas (RGV), Frenchie Gilliam (San Antonio), Tahnae Tarkenton (State Capital), Mandy Grisham (Whitney Lake).

Disappointments:

There were several top contenders that just seemed to lose their spark, their flare, and their style. Overall, I think they played it too safe. Also, if I see one more see through dress I think I’m going to burst! It’s always crazy to me how girls will go all out at the preliminary phase, but then slack at Texas! You should look better than you did at prelims not worse! There were several girls that made significant improvements since the spring, but then there were some heavy hitters that left their A-game at home.

Congrats to everyone competing for making it this far and battling Miss Texas USA and the first week back to school. That’s a feat in itself!

As a side note, I thought it was interesting that Austin and Colleyville’s gowns had almost the exact same bead work. Given how odd of a gown it was in the first place it’s even stranger that 2 girls would have picked it!

So, I'm not up on Texas USA trivia but I was wondering -- how often does a new contestant win Miss Texas USA (El Paso was new, right?)?

Also, is she now the tallest Miss Texas USA in history?

they put Gulf coast (Taylor) as 3rd runner-up and Capital of TX (Megan) as 4th runner-up... as a Megan fan I have been waiting for her to finally get the placement she deserves, that girl is gorgeous I don't know how she was overlooked in the past, I think they should put her proper placement.

We live in DFW and it seems that their are tons of formers who are now either moms or working. It would be soo neat to form a group of woman who all competed, and make some new friends with at least one commonality..pageants! Thoughts?

she is wearing CLW's off the shoulder white gown with same styling behind it... not confirmed that is is her dress, but if its not, its a very close knock off.... i remember thinking CLW would win in that dress, but it never happened :-(

so there you have it, the reason she made it to Top 17! ;-)

What an exciting pageant to follow! We had over 50 people participating in the chat room - thanks to Lucy and Dairy Queen for providing updates!

Now, the pageant. I only consider two Miss TX USA pageants exciting from the last ten years - the year when Crystle Stewart finally won, and this year, when the ultimate newcomer won the state's biggest pageant on her first try! Even without seeing the results, the excitement was incredible.

Ana Rodriguez should be VERY proud - she's gone from Miss Congeniality in 2005 to placing 3RU, 2RU and now 1RU. I don't know if she ages out or not, but if so at least she can go out knowing she did and looked her very best. Angy Torres should be very proud, too. Placing 2RU your first time at TX USA is a great accomplishment only a few girls can claim.

Congratulations to Megan McAnelly, who was just rewarded for all the improvements she made this year! Winning Miss Congeniality on top of placing 3RU should make her feel so good!

And congratulations to Shannon McNamara! I wish "Friend of Shannon" had been in the chatroom to see NC Gal and I screaming when her name came up as a semi-finalist! Like Megan, it's nice to see girls rewarded for their improvements.

Congratulations to Sarah Boehner for finally cracking the Top 15, and Whitney Jarrett, too! Sarah wins my good taste award for consistantly wearing beautiful clothes and looking refined in both interview and evening gown. And Whitney's improvement in styling this past year was very evident and I'm glad to see it recognized with a spot in the semis. Both girls deserved it!

Someone in the chat room asked who to root against. And for the first time in any pageant, I couldn't name one girl! I honestly think this was the best semi-final group ever and every single girl deserved to make the cut. The only slight surprise for me was Emeraude Tobia, and only then because she wasn't in very good shape, but she was so beautiful I don't think you could consider it a big surprise. For me this is the only time I can remember being completely satisfied with the semi-finalists and thinking every single girl deserved it.

I got 13/17 and 3/5 including my top 3. The only two on my list who didn't make the cut were Raevan Valadez and Ashley Hughes. Raevan's omission, I think it's safe to say, was shocking to many of us, but I can't fault any of the other girls who made it ahead of her, they all deserved it!

And this is my favorite Top 3 of all-time, too! I would have been happy with any one of my top 3 and I'm really glad they all looked their best. I think a lot of credit has to go to having so many former titleholders on the judging panel. Kelsey, Ana and Angy were the clear standouts this year, and I'm really glad they were the last three up there. I would have been thrilled with any one of them as the winner, but I wonder if all those ex-titleholders saw Kelsey and recognized how unique she was to Texas pageantry and were just as excited as many of us were by her fresh, new look. That's not to take anything away from Ana or Angy because they looked absolutely perfect, but no one can say Ana looked fresh, she looked like a veteran pro, and Angy was polished to perfection.

I can only imagine what a heady experience this has been for Kelsey and I can't wait to see the video of her reaction! I don't think there has ever been a Texas USA titleholder quite like her, and I can't wait to see how she does at Miss USA next year!

This really was a fun, terribly exciting pageant to follow. As i said in the chat room, best pageant I never saw! Congratulations, Kelsey, and welcome to Texas pageantry!

Subject: I am curious about the ages of the ladies in top 17-I know that many of them are 23-24 years old and texas veterans. Yet the winner, I think, is the youngest. I think the judges got it right, but I am curious about the ages. I thought that some of our veterans really had soccer mom looks this year, but they made it into top 17. They looked very pageanty and processed-beautiful-but not fresh and vibrant. This is where I think Kelsey outshone them.

1. Does anyone agree that if Kelli Harral would have had the dress she had on last night at Teen USA she might have stood a better chance? I thought it was a perfect teen dress for her.
2. It just amazes me how some of the girls with the big titles, and all the best help Texas can offer, will wear a dress so wrong for them. Yet girls with probably a slim to zero chance of winning will get a dress that's perfect for them. Kind of makes me wonder what the motive is for the people who say they're advisors and trainers.
Subject: I am predicting that El Paso will be our winner based on photos. I hope she's ready to give up volleyball for a semester to prepare for Miss USA! She clearly stands out. I wish Raeven had chosen another gown-this one makes her look shorter to me in the pics. Not a fan of Houston's gown-too busy with all the ruching, but I love DFW's gown-very elegant.

My question is, after looking at the contestants, both headshots and what has been posted on Valley Queens, it is very clear that some of these girls don't even have a slight chance. Do you think these girls know this going in, and if so, what is the appeal of competing? Is it the thrill of competition, a self-esteem booster? I have never competed so I honestly don't know.

Surprises:

-The size of the stage! I’m quite impressed with the quality of the stage… I thought it would be similar to that of Miss Texas Teen USA and it’s anything but!
-Kallye Mitchell! She looked amazing during swimsuit preview! A little harsh in interview, but I think that had to do with the makeup. Long hair suits her much better and takes away the sportiness in her look.
-Kelsey Moore! I had her in my top 15 all along, but she just moved up after seeing her preview. What a bangin’ bod!! More importantly, I could really see her on the Miss USA stage. She looks really untainted from pageantry. Doesn’t appear to be over-trained, but then again, I’m taking everything from a photo!
-Megan McAnelly! This girl really pulled it together for interview! She looked classy, appropriate, fresh, and absolutely gorgeous!
-Huge surprise… I’m appalled at some of the interview attire choices! I’m all about being fashion forward, but good lord! I think I remember seeing major cleavage, 7 inch platform heels, and a ton of makeup! I know they just finished swimsuit preview on stage, but most of the girl’s makeup was way over the top!

Disappointments:

-I refuse to put girl’s names up here as a disappointment, but as I mentioned above, I am disappointed in some individual’s choices for interview. I’m eager to see tomorrow’s pictures to compare to the first group. The judging panel seems to be very traditional with Christine, Angie, and a former Miss Pennsylvania as judges. I know there are 4 other, but 3 women with a strong pageant background could be detrimental for some of the contestants with oober sexy interview outfits.
-I know the pictures were taken from afar, but I didn’t even notice Ana Rodriguez. I wrote out my list and completely left her off. I didn’t realize the mistake until I looked at interview photos. I have her on my list for the simple fact that I know she’ll be up there, but I don’t know what was missing during her preview… I just didn’t even notice her in the picture. Again, maybe it’s because the photo was slightly blurry so I just passed her by. She looked great for interview though!

Top 15:

1. Austin, Raevan Valadez 2. Bayou City, Kallye Mitchell 3. Capital of Texas, Megan McAnelly 4. Central Texas, Ana Rodriguez 5. DFW, Christina Campfield 6. Dallas, Brittany Tiner 7. El Paso, Kelsey Moore 8. Gulf Coast, Taylor Britton 9. Houston, Angy Torres 10. North Arlington, Whitney Jarrett 11. Park Cities, Sarah Boehner 12. San Antonio, Frenchie Gilliam 13. Southlake, Ashley Smith 14. State Capital, Tahnae Tarkenton 15. Travis County, Carly Morris

Top 5:

1. Houston, Angy Torres 2. Central Texas, Ana Rodriguez 3. DFW, Christina Campfield 4. El Paso, Kelsey Moore 5. Austin, Raevan Valadez

Subject: My Final Top 15 Picks for Miss Texas USA

Author:
Meemaw
[Edit]

Date Posted: 08/31/09 10:21:12am

TOP 5

HOUSTON - Angy Torres - Angy was my pick to win Texas even before she won Houston. This girl has great Miss USA potential, she is a stunning model whose legs really deserve their own category. According to those who know her she is smart, a little quiet but loves to laugh, and is one of the nicest girls you'll ever meet, not a mean bone in her body. A newcomer to TX USA, she has worked with Elise Horner (who placed 1RU last year as a newcomer), and she has the backing of the Houston machine behind her. As long as she projects her personality and doesn't falter in interview, I think the crown is hers.
CENTRAL TEXAS - Ana Rodriguez - this might sound strange to say considering Ana's been in the Top 5 for the last two years, but she's a bit of a darkhorse to win.  For one thing she looks like a mature, sexy woman competing against girls, and I honestly don't know if it will work for or against her. I also think she's a little lazy when it comes to her preparation. My main concern with Ana is her styling, and I don't think her placement will be decided until she walks out in evening gown. If she wears something tasteful and Angy Torres falters, Ana should emerge as the winner.
AUSTIN - Raevan Valadez - two years ago I never thought this girl would make it as a Miss contestant when I saw some unflattering photos from her freshman year in college. Since then she has shed the freshman 15 and matured nicely, and while I didn't give her enough credit last year, I'm a convert now. Her disingenuous interview is a turnoff for some, but she wouldn't be the first girl to win by being phoney. Her win in Austin was particularly impressive considering she beat both Ana and Tahnae, and she's almost certain to take the next step at TX USA, which is the top 5. Could sneak in and win if Angy and Ana both stumble.
DFW - Christina Campfield - last year Christina was a newcomer to Texas USA and made quite a splash by emerging from her sister's shadow and impressing everyone to the point where many thought she should have advanced beyond the Top 15. Now it's time for her to enter the Top 5 and get in line for the crown! I think Christina is classically beautiful and the kind of girl who will only get more beautiful with each passing year.
STATE CAPITAL - Tahnae Tarkenton - Tahnae is the ultimate cutie pie and there's no point in denying it, her pouty kitten look on the TX USA site isn't her at all. She has a few detractors who find her lack of sex appeal a liability, but I love her just the way she is. Not every girl needs to be sizzling with the fever. Tahnae placed 4RU last year and I don't see a Top 5 this year without her.

TOP 10

DALLAS - Brittany Tiner - her headshot on the Miss Texas USA website is so tragic I refuse to use it. The Brittany who wowed everyone in Dallas looks more like this. As long as she shows up looking like she did in Dallas she'll be a serious threat to make the Top 5. If she shows up looking like that Hee Haw headshot on the TX USA site she'll get laughed out of Houston and end up working as a gumsmacking waitress in Branson.
SOUTHLAKE - Ashley Smith - as long as she keeps her mouth shut I am in awe of her, but she needs to stop with the affected babytalk if she wants to be taken seriously. Personally I think her headshot conveys a maturity she doesn't yet have, but she's a stunning girl who won both swimsuit and photogenic in Dallas - no easy feat considering the competition. Top 5 at Texas is not out of the question, and with a little maturity we're looking at a future Miss Texas USA.
PARK CITIES - Sarah Boehner - Sarah competed strongly at the two toughest locals in Texas this year, placing 2RU in Austin and 1RU in Dallas. She is a gorgeous girl and very photogenic, but she needed to mature over the past year. Supposedly she has, and if so, she should do well at TX USA. I think she rivals Ashley Smith for photogenic.
NORTH ARLINGTON - Whitney Jarrett - another Top 5 girl from Dallas, I've been a fan of Whitney for some time now, but she needed to work on her styling and find the right look.  One more year and continued work on her styling and I think she'll be a Top 5 contender.
BROWNSVILLE - Emeraude Tobia - what a pleasure it is seeing this girl progress!  She looks amazing after reportedly working with Osmel Souza, and her candids prove this headshot is no illusion. She should be a strong favorite, maybe not to win but to do very well.

TOP 15

GULF COAST - Taylor Britton - I know she placed in the Top 5 last year, but I think Taylor is just too odd looking to win.  She's a pretty girl, but her facial features don't say Miss Texas USA to me. Still, she's super tall, super fit and super blonde, and in Texas that's good enough to get you in the Top 15. The additional cosmetic work may keep her in the Top 5, although personally I don't think she helped herself with those square shaped sandbags.
SAN ANTONIO - Frenchellen Gilliam - Frenchie never looked better than she did when she won San Antonio. She made Top 15 a couple of years ago and looks even better now. She's so in!
CAPITAL OF TEXAS- Megan McAnelly - I love this girl's new look. The old look wasn't her at all - she always dressed very old school and looked so prim and proper. Then she'd open her mouth and a hippie would fall out. This new look is more true to her personality, it's relaxed and fun, more contemporary and kind of messy. I think she has a good chance to make the cut, and I applaud the new look!
EL PASO - Kelsey Moore - the surprise of the year, this 6 foot 2 inch newcomer caught the attention of everyone when she won El Paso. This headshot isn't very good but her candid pics do not disappoint, and curious pageant fans anxiously await the opportunity to devour her.
BAYOU CITY - Kallye Mitchell - this girl has a face to die for and a body that must give her fits. She has the kind of wide, curveless midsection that doesn't allow for anything on her hips, thighs or anywhere in between. She needs to work with a trainer who can sculpt her midsection better because it's always going to be her achilles heel. From the neck up she's a shoo-in, from the neck down she's a question mark. And no, "John," I do not hate Bayou City, she's in my Top 15!

TOP 25 (ON THE BUBBLE)
BAY AREA - Alicia Venzant - Crystle-lite
BRAZOS VALLEY - Megan Scamardo - a classic over the top Texas pageant girl
CENTRALPLEX - Shannon McNamara - amazing transformation after working with Nicole O'Brien
CINCO RANCH - Nikki Golyer - 4RU in Houston and a pretty girl, but drop that awkward swimsuit stance!
FORT BEND COUNTY - Brittney Randolph - if she lives up to her va-va-voom headshot she's in!
HARRIS COUNTY - Lauren Sapaugh - I'd like to put Kallye Mitchell's head on Lauren Sapaugh's body
ROYSE CITY - Alicia Farrar - a very pretty newcomer who reminds me of Miss FL USA 06 Cristen Duren
SMITH COUNTY - Chelsea Culpepper - this girl is ka-uute! Her name alone screams Miss Texas USA
SOUTH TEXAS - Ashley Hughes - surprised me last year making the Top 15, she'll probably surprise me again this year
SOUTHEAST TEXAS - Peyton Saverance - her 1RU placement in Houston was a surprise but makes her one to watch

Austin and Dallas figure prominently in my Top 15 this year, including the entire Top 5 from Austin and 4 of the Top 5 from Dallas. Three notable things about this year: 1) the absence of many long-time competitors who either aged out or chose not to compete. This should introduce a lot of girls to the Top 15 for the first time. I have 8 on my list, including my projected winner. 2) Never before has there been such a discrepancy in height between very tall girls (with 6'2 Kelsey Moore leading the way) and very short (with four of Dallas' tiny Top 5), all likely favorites to make the cut. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out! And 3) this is the year Miss Texas USA is slumming it. The pageant will not be broadcast on TV, nor will it even be webcast. It will be held in a second class venue with a much smaller audience and a much smaller stage, and it will have a noticeably scaled-down look. There is a significantly reduced prize package and an undeniable loss of prestige for both the pageant and the organization. I sincerely hope this is a one time thing and that the Clarks dedicate themselves to restoring this pageant before its too late. With 110 girls paying a $900 entry fee, surely they can find a more suitable venue that holds more people and at least puts them back on par with other states. At the very least they need to have the pageant webcast if they hope to continue generating interest. Let's face it, this year everything about the pageant is cheap. Except, of course, the entry fee.

The ballots are in, thanks to everyone who voted! I used the traditional pageant scoring system, awarding points as follows: 4RU - 0 pts, 3RU - .5 pt, 2RU - 1 pt, 1RU - 2 pts, W - 5 pts. And here are the results!

Our 4th runner-up, with 38.5 pts, is...

Miss State Capital, Tahnae Tarkenton!

Our 3rd runner-up, with 68 pts, is...

Miss Austin, Raevan Valadez!

Our 2nd runner-up, with 69 pts, is...

Miss DFW, Christina Campfield!

Our 1st runner-up, with 72.5 pts, is...

Miss Central Texas, Ana Rodriguez!

And our Mock Miss Texas USA 2010, with a whopping 117.5 pts, is...

Miss Houston, Angy Torres! Congratulations!!!

Your top 5 favorites were very clear from the start, in fact no one in the Top 5 finished outside of the Top 5 in any round of voting. But this was by no means a Houston rout until the very last round. In the three previous rounds, voting was extremely close among the entire Top 5, with four of them finishing 1st or tied for 1st in at least one round. Only in the final round did the voting turn into a blowout victory for Houston. Thanks to everyone who participated in the contest!

Congratulations to Miss Houston, Angy Torres, YOU ARE OUR MOCK MISS TEXAS USA 2010!

...that former Texas Teen USA competitor, Candice Crawford, is dating Tony Romo... and that she is hosting the Cowboys' Weekend Sports show on CW-33.

Has anyone seen her on it?? How does she do?
