Subject: What qualifications should a pageant judge possess?

Author:
There's been much negative talk regarding the judges used at North East Star.

Let's hear your opinions! For a pageant such as North East Star, where the entry fee is low, what type of judges do those entering expect? A former Miss America? Miss Maine? The mother of a queen? Please share!

Judges do not necessarily have to be current or former pageant queens, but they should know something about pageantry (director, coach, committee), stage presence, or for the little ones, have experience with children such as being a teacher. In my opinion, and from talking with others, it is difficult to be objective when a judge knows many of the contestants. I think this was part of the problem that people had with Northeast Star. The former dance teacher and pageant director had met several of the girls at Little Miss and Miss International, and she was also the dance teacher of the director. Many people had the pre-conceived idea (correct or not) that she wanted her student's students to win talent. Personally, I think the outcomes were fair. It is very difficult to find people to volunteer to judge pageants in rural areas, especially people who don't know any of the contestants. I do wonder if the outcomes would have been different if the 2 judges who couldn't attend had been there, as it is often said, Different judges, different outcome. However, the directors did the best they could to not cancel the pageant.

If a judge is good, they judge you on what you do THAT day only, whether they know you or not.

The judges used at Northeast Star were all qualified and had some affiliation with pageants. In fact, Melissa Wilson Wright, a former Miss New Brunswick, who judged for Northeast Star has also judged for Miss Eastern Maine and Miss St. Croix Valley. As the director of those two pageants, I can tell you from looking at the judges' scores and comments, she is a very fair and honest judge.
