The 72 beauties seeking the Miss Universe crown in long Beach, California, were thrown into a temporary tizzy when Miss Germany, Marina Orschel, changed somebody had undermined her vital statistics. She was furious in broken accents when she discovered a German press agent erroneously listed her bust measurement as 36 inches. “I know I am size 40,” she yelped. Pageant officials scurried to correct the error.

Sara Tal, 22-year-old Israeli student who is Miss Israel, arrived at Idlewild Airport to compete in the Miss Universe contest. Miss Tal, a tall brunette, is a political science student at the University of Tel Aviv. She served in the Pioneer Fighting Youth as a border patrol guard. She wore desert clothes of white cotton, including a coat, blouse, skirt and hat. She displayed hand-made Israeli Jewelry and said that it was her ambition to return to Israel to work for the government as an aid to immigrants. She was born in Poland and lived in Israel most of her life.

Margaret Anne Haywood was the first runner-up twice: First, she was the first runner-up of Miss U.S.A. 1955 and she represented Arkansas. The winner was Carlene King Johnson who participated in Miss Universe 1955 and she was in the Top 15 (Left photo).

Second, she was the first runner-up of Miss World 1955 and the winner was Miss Venezuela Susana Duijm (Right photo).

Eric Morley went to Long Beach to see how Miss Universe 1955 was organised and copied some ideas for Miss World 1955. Eric Morley invited the candidates from Alaska, Argentina, Cuba, Honduras and Venezuela to go to London to participate in Miss World. Only Cuba, Honduras and Venezuela competed in Miss World 1955.

Shapely Miss Venezuela, Susana Djuim, 19, right, who placed first in Great Britain,s annual cheesecake derby and who was named Miss World in the international contest at London, England, gets a congratulatory kiss from first runner-up, Miss U.S.A., Margaret Anne Haywood, 20, of Jonesboro, Arkansas. This marked the first time that the title has gone to an entrant from South America. Miss Venezuela, dark-eyed and shaping up 34-21-34 before an all-star panel of judges, took the title, a new sports car and a $1,400 cheque from a field of 21 international beauties.

This photo was published on 22nd July, the day of the final night. Miss Canada, Cathy Diggles waves in a parade. She is one of the 15 contestants who Thursday night won their way into the Miss Universe 1955 beauty contest semi-finals. The other semi-finalists are from Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), El Salvador, England, Germany, Guatemala, Honduras, Japan, Norway, Sweden, U.S.A. and Venezuela.

A reporter asked all 15 in the group for their choice as winner. The answer was practically unanimous: Miss Sweden because she is the pattern of the previous Miss Universe winners.

All foreign contestants wore native costumes. Judging was confined, however, to preliminary selection of a Miss U.S.A. Miss England, Margaret Rowe (right), 19, who is described as having the kind of figure sailors whistle at, holds the trophy she won for being the most popular girl in a parade of Miss Universe contestants. The parade was witnessed by half a million people.

This photo was published on 10th July, twelve days before the final night. A pretty Korean girl discards convention and her shoes during a “Miss Korea” contest in Seoul. Other contestants who wore shoes, wished they had thought of it too. We don’t know which girl won.
