Miss Honduras Expected To Be Crowned 2009 Winner
Miss Honduras is the current favourite to be crowned Miss Universe 2009 on August 23rd and she can be backed at 14/1 with Paddy Power. Those may seem pretty big odds for the favourite but it is worth considering there are 84 entrants in total. It is worth considering making all bets each way bets on Miss Universe 2009, Paddy Power will be paying a quarter of the odds for five places.

Miss Universe GOSSIP!!!!!

-A handful of contestants have been bitten by jellyfish due to a current that is bringing all kinds of marine species into the Bahamas' beaches.

-Miss Dominican Republic (Ada de la Cruz) could not have her swimsuit photo taken because she got a rash (allergic reaction). Her photos will be done as she gets better.

-The last contestant to arrive was Miss Trinidad & Tobago (yes they are competing). Her name is Kerry Ann, very tall with short hair and is apparently related to Wendy Fitzwilliam. The staff loves her.

-The contestants have been warned by their chaperones that they CANNOT CHANGE THEIR GOWNS. The gowns they wore in the photos are the gowns they must wear in the competition, according to the production team.

-The chaperones confiscated the Blackberries of about 5 contestants, who kept texting their boyfriends endlessly.

-One contestant (who has yet to be seen) is apparently down with the swine flu. Four other contestants, including her roommate, are showing symptoms. Medical personnel has not confirmed the type of flu.

-The national director of the Dominican Republic has asked the hotel for extra security upon her arrival. She says she wants to protect herself -and her entourage- from the Puerto Rican delegation.

-The contestants have been complaining endlessly about their portraits which were uploaded to the official website without any filter or retouching at all, showing zits, eyebags, and other imperfections.

-Ines Ligron in her blog is upset about the quality of this year's portraits. She is also upset that Miss Russia is wearing a gown by Armani Prive, so she has decided to get an even more expensive gown (Celine) for Emiri, who will wear a gown by Nicolas Felizola for the preliminaries.

-Ligron was also mad about all the negative publicity toward the national costume, so she axed the idea. Miss Japan will be wearing a japanese robot costume.

-Some delegates had problems with the handling of their luggage. About 12 national costumes, specially big ones from the latinas, are broken in pieces and being restored for the competition next week. Miss Puerto Rico's gloves from her costume are missing, and Miss Russia lost her laptop computer. Her boyfriend is sending a replacement.

-Contestants comment among themselves that Miss Colombia MUST BE OVER 30. Her roommate even asked to see her passport, which offended the Colombian contestant. Due to this, she is forced now to carry her personal documents everywhere she goes.

-One of the favorites (not latin, not european, not asian) has been going to the bathroom too many times after her meals. Apparently she forces the meal back inside one of the stalls.

-One of the african contestants was locked in her room for about 1 hour, after her roommate left, took the key and the electronic lock went berserk.

-The designers have been checking out the girls for the fittings for the Fashion Show. However, the fashion show producer said that no girls under 5'8" will be allowed to take part on the show, since these clothes are only for tall women.

-Also, the MUO will pick a group of 10 contestants to fly to Miami next week to do a media round of interviews for Telemundo and NBC. The "Donald" himself, will fly an extra 5 contestants to New York to do media appearances promoting the pageant. Soon the lucky delegates will be announced.

-A committee to organize the Miss Universe 2010 pageant in Perth (Australia) will arrive in the Bahamas next week. They are very interested in the project.

-Apparently, and it's big news in the hotel: Misses Albania and Kosovo share much more than just a "room".

-2 european contestants fainted due to the tropical climate.

-For the first time in Miss Universe history, Miss USA is considering wearing a cocktail dress for the evening gown competition. She says it's to make sure she doesn't fall due to the karma of the previous titleholders. People are even betting money on her possible fall.

-2 contestants (one latina and one european who share a room) clogged the toilet in their bathroom causing an enormous flood.

-Miss Mexico keeps being criticized by her directors (Lupita Jones) saying that her make-up is all wrong. She is trying to cope with it as she ignores the negative comments.

-And the BIG NEWS OF THE DAY!!! There will be a Top 16. The Miss Universe Organization and the committee, had agreed that the People of The Bahamas will be able to choose an extra semifinalist, via newspaper voting and SMS, giving an extra girl the chance to advance in the competition.

- Miss Colombia declared that she is the winner and that the other girls should be happy with fighting for the 1st runner-up spot.

-USA is not well liked by most contestants.

-Miss Ukraine and Miss Romania have been nicknamed “Holly and Kendra” by the staff working with the girls.

-Venezuela is rooming with Ukraine, Mexico and Puerto Rico, while Canada is rooming with Bolivia, and Colombia with Egypt.

-Miss Japan fell asleep in the tanning bed and arrived looking like an Oompa Loompa.

-The favorite of the organization is Miss Spain, who is extremely beautiful and seems like a girl easy to work with.

-It’s been the talk of the hotel that the judges have been instructed to NOT look for latinas. The MUO wants to explore other horizons.

-Peru and Bolivia do not talk to each other.

-Same happens with Israel who ignores Lebanon and Egypt.

-South Africa believes she can win and sees Dominican Republic and Spain as her competition.

-A couple of contestants have already been affected by the spicy caribbean food.

-The girls are not allowed to be “connected” while doing official activities and events but a bunch of them are constantly texting and twittering through their phones.

-Miss Bahamas has not been a very good of a host. She ignores most girls and keeps talking on the phone with her staff and stylists.

-A group of latinas make fun of Misses Turks and Caicos and Cyprus.

-Mexico is constantly bitched at by Lupita Jones, who keeps calling and telling her she is doing everything wrong. Today, she was seen crying in the lobby.

-Miss Russia has a millionaire boyfriend who keeps calling her and making sure his “baby” is well taken care of. She will wear a $45,000 black Armani Prive gown for the finals, that will be brought by Vera Krasova, last year’s Miss Russia Universe.

-95% of the candidates have already reached the island of the Bahamas.

-The so-called divas are Malaysia, Philippines and Vietnam which is not going well with the other candidates.

-It is mentioned that Ms. USA, Venezuela and Japan are being pampered and are comfortable in a spa and are called only when needed while the others have to wait in the sun.

-Ms. Puerto Rico arrived on Monday knowing all the names of the Latin contestants and calling all of them by name.

-One of the contestants from South America has halitosis (bad breath) and the other girls run when she comes near. It’s not Venezuela or Colombia.

-Another South American contestant speaks ill about Ms. Peru and a lot of the girls say that it is because she has a slamming body.

-Miss Peru has the best sense of humor making all the girls laugh.

-Miss Japan has such an unnatural tan that everyone says she is orange.

-Ms. Dominican Republic takes pictures with all the contestants, talks to everyone and is one of the tallest and the girls call her “the gentle giant” all with love.

-The interview video of all the girls should be ready by this week and it is mentioned as early as today, Tuesday.

-The Puerto Rican designer Carlos Alberto will be supervising the opening number as he is in charge of the opening dresses that all the contestants will be wearing

MUTYA NG PILIPINAS 2009

The 36 Mutya ng Pilipinas official candidates during the press presentation held at Edsa Shangri-La. — Photos By Ver Paulino

MANILA, Philippines - As 36 young hopefuls walked the ramp to pursue their dreams, Reneé Salud looks on, remembering his own dreams many decades ago. The occasion was the press presentation of the 2009 Mutya ng Pilipinas sa Aurora candidates, a pageant that picked out young beautiful and intelligent Filipinos to spread the good name of the country worldwide, and started a national craze for beauty contests. That was 41 years ago and the craze has not abated. Filipinos are still crazy about beauty competitions. And Mutya continues reinventing itself.

When the number is whittled down to 12 and to the final three winners with the titles Mutya ng Pilipinas International, Mutya ng Pilipinas Tourism, and Mutya ng Pilipinas Overseas, the girls 18 to 25 years of age, 5’5” and above, some with mixed Filipino ancestry will have undergone lessons in history, diplomacy, confidence and leadership, humility; gone through jungle survival tests; learned to appreciate other cultures, and solidified their pride in one’s roots. In the end, they will have all emerged as winners ready for the next challenge life has destined them to tackle.

This is exactly what Reneé, top gun in production of the Mutya beauty pageant from 2008 went through. We ambush interviewed him while on the run with his multifarious responsibilities of some 250 people directly under him, dozens of pocket events, TV tapings, pictorials, rehearsals, costume fittings, coordination with sponsors, selection of venues for pre-pageant activities, etc. He must be responsible for the biggest decisions and the most trivial. “Ako pa ba ang tatanungin nyo kung anong kakanin nyo sa tanghalian? (Do I have to decide for you what to eat for lunch?),” he was speaking into his cellphone. But through it all, he remains cool and unruffled. He loves it. It is his dream come true.

Which is why he is the best person to be project director of Mutya. I have always had a passion for beauty pageants, he tells us, reminiscing how he would field his models like Bong Dimayacyac, Mutya Crisostomo and others while nervously watching on the sidelines. The candidates see in his success a sampling of their future. He never thought he would graduate into production, first by taking charge of screening candidates to heading the entire production aspect.

It has been a long and back-breaking climb yet to this day Reneé remains brimming with new ideas. This year’s innovation is the outdoor reality challenges, most fitting in the natural beauty of Aurora province, one of the few remaining pristine areas in the country. Aurora’s governor, the brilliant Bellaflor Angara-Castillo and the entire Angara brood of Baler Mayor Arturo Angara, Rep. Sonny Angara, and Sen. Edgardo Angara are obviously to be congratulated for their insistence in protecting the wonders of their home province.

At the press presentation, the 36 girls displayed their long gowns of sabutan fiber indigenous to Aurora. Mutya has always given emphasis not only to promoting the country’s beautiful women, but also its products and sites. Apart from Philippine-based candidates are seven based outside in Canada, Norway, and all over the US. Two special prizes at P10,000 each were given during the press presentation namely The Aurora Province Beauty Award which went to Sheryl Rose Guerrero from Aurora, and the Photographer’s Choice award won by Rene McHugh from USA East Coast.

Coronation night is Sunday, Aug. 9 in historic Baler. Judges are Consul General of Australia, Hon. Hugh Wilson; Elvira Angara, wife of Rep. Sonny Angara; Alfred Vargas; Fanny Serrano; Malgorzata Rozniecka, Miss International 2001; Randy Ortiz; Jackie Aquino; and Ana Marie Morelos, Mutya 2007. It will be aired on Aug. 16, 9 p.m. on TV5. The Philippine Star, Manila, 05.08.09

"Bianca was simply radiant"

Date Posted: 16:36:41 08/05/09 Wed

With 18 days to go before the crowing of a new Miss Universe, all of the contestants competing in this year’s pageant are now in The Bahamas. The final contestant to arrive was Miss Zambia Andella Chileshe Matthews who came in just before 6 p.m. on Tuesday evening. Hers was a relatively quiet arrival, particularly when compared to that of Miss Philippines Bianca Manalo who arrived late Monday night to much fanfare. A large number of Filipinos residing in The Bahamas stayed up late to catch a glimpse of their queen as she arrived at the Atlantis Paradise Island resort. Despite traveling for more than 24 hours, Bianca was simply radiant – her spirits boosted by shouts of “Mabuhay” from her fellow countrymen. The gathering represented members of the Organization of Filipinos living in the Bahamas. Bianca said she’s looking forward to the Miss Universe experience, and seeing so many familiar faces helps. She revealed that this was her first time traveling alone and she didn’t know what to expect, but she certainly wasn’t expecting the kind of welcome she received. She said she’s very happy to see so many Filipinos here in the Bahamas waving their national flag.
The contestants will make their first public appearance on Wednesday when a group of them will take a walk through the Ardastra Gardens, famed for its marching Flamingos. While there, they will spend a few moments with the residents of several children’s homes. Their next stop will be the historic Fort Charlotte - the largest fort in Nassau – for a photo op. The ladies will then have lunch at the colorful Compass Point Restaurant before making their way to the Dock Boardwalk of the Sandals Resort.
Miss Universe Dayana Mendoza arrives Wednesday afternoon, officially kicking off the pageant. After watching the delegates arrive over the past few days, these are the contestants who have caught my eye so far (in random order): Dominican Republic, Ethiopia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Jamaica, China, Philippines, France, South Africa, Russia, USA, Netherlands, Japan, Kosovo, Australia, Mexico, Venezuela, Iceland, Albania and Belgium. This is not a prediction list, as I’m sure it will evolve as the pageant progresses and I see more of the contestants in action. However for me, these are the delegates who have hit the ground running. But as we all know, when it comes to pageantry the race is not to the swiftest.
Host queen Kiara Sherman checked into the hotel on Monday, and I’ve been informed that she is rooming with Miss Japan. There has been much debate over whether Kiara can give the Bahamas its first Miss Universe placement. One thing for sure is that she has drastically improved since winning her local title, at the hands of coach and stylist Bobby Ackbarali who has an enviable track record in preparing queens. The question is, can Bobby’s winning formula help Kiara to crack the semis, especially in such a competitive year? -Michelle Malcolm for Critical Beauty
