A Post Miss Universe Eyewitness Report

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Funfare’s New York-based “beauty expert” Felix Manuel was in the Bahamas to cover the 2009 Miss Universe Pageant held last week.

Here’s his brief report:

Venezuela made history by scoring a back-to-back victory at the Miss Universe pageant when 18-year-old Stefania Fernandez Krupij won the title. Last year’s winner was Dayana Mendoza, also from Venezuela.

Stefania stood out among the 80-plus contestants because of her vibrant personality and glamorous packaging similar to that of stars of the ’50s.

It’s the first back-to-back victory in the history of the Miss Universe pageant. Sweden scored a back-to-back at the Miss World pageant in 1951 and 1952, and India duplicated the feat in 1999 and 2000. The Philippines won the Miss Asia-Pacific Quest in 1982 and 1983.

I was surprised to be on the same flight to New York with Stefania. I talked to her briefly while we were waiting for our luggage at JFK International Airport. She said, “I am very happy to have made history for my country. I am only 18 and I am proud to give this honor to my country. I was so happy that when Dayana was putting the crown on my head, we were like children jumping with joy.”

She said that Miss Philippines, Bianca Manalo, is a beautiful person inside-out.

“I was surprised that she didn’t get into the semi-finals,” Stefania added. She did not comment when I asked her how she felt that no Asian made it to the semis.

Meanwhile, Bianca took her defeat gracefully. She attended a farewell party organized by the Filipino Community in the Bahamas and was overwhelmed when children sang for her. Bianca felt at home in the Bahamas because of the tremendous support of the Filipino Community which was always present during public events. “It was a marvelous experience to have represented my country well,” said Bianca. “But more than anything, I will always cherish the love and support I got from the Filipinos in the Bahamas.”

EXPOSE: MUST READ: THE MUO POST PRODUCTION MEETING

Author:
EXPOSE

Date Posted: 05:32:22 08/26/09 Wed

Two days after the crowning of a new Miss Universe and a day before it finally leaves the Bahamas, the MUO called on a high level staff meeting behind closed doors in one of the Atlantis Resort’s function rooms. The principal objective of the meeting was simple: provide a post production/post-event evaluation of the just concluded pageant. As a part of the “wardrobe crew” of this year’s Miss Universe pageant, I had the privilege of joining the exclusive meeting and “in the interest of the truth,” would now want to share with the public some of the things that I found out.

TRUMP AND MUO

Officers and staff of the MUO (including Paula) aren’t very happy with the way the results are formulated year after year after year. Most of them feel really bad how pageant fans the world over react negatively to the MUO’s supposed choices, especially since the final results declared on pageant night aren’t exactly reflective of the real list that preliminary judges come up with. Paula even commented, “pageant fans aren’t blind. They have a good feel of who are in and who are not.” She even feels for deserving contestants who get booted out by the so-called Trump ladies and has admitted to feeling very uncomfortable having to look at these ladies’ supporters straight in the eye and give them an explanation for an obvious injustice. The fact that there were no Asians in this year’s Final 15 made Paula shake her head in disappointment saying “there’s just no way for us to deny that some of our results were somehow fixed. We could have at least had token spots.” No matter how difficult, at the end of the day, Paula just chooses to stand by what her boss wants and be the pro that she is! Based on what I heard during the meeting, however, discontent over Trump’s management of the MUO is growing.

TRUMP CARDS

No matter how hard they deny it or even cover up the existence of a Trump list, let it be said that Mr. Trump truly does a selection of his own favorites. This was thoroughly discussed during the meeting. In this year’s edition of the Miss Universe Pageant, five Top 15 ladies were taken out of the list to give way to Mr. Trump’s personal choices. Statuesque Ms. Vietnam was one of them. Even worse was the case of the Philippines, which already had three delegates taken out of the semifinal list in three editions of the Trump organized Miss Universe Pageant. India is another country that is slowly losing its steam as far as Mr. Trump is concerned. Mr. Trump once commented that Indian women are “way too smart and not very sexy.”

IT IS ALL BUSINESS

While pageant fanatics may consider exclusion of their ladies as an act of racism or personal bias, the truth about the selection of Miss Universe winners under the Trump franchise is that this is all based on business. Check out the global footprint of the Trump Organization’s Real Estate, Hotel and Golf Club businesses. It will be easy to correlate their locations to the winners of his pageant. Aside from having these types of developments all over the USA, Mr. Trump has real estate projects in Cap Cana, Dominican Republic (it should no longer surprise you why Dominican Republic has been very successful in penetrating the top 5 almost yearly, with Amelia Vega as a recent winner); Toronto, Canada (of course Natalie’s crown was a fitting “thank you”); Seoul, Soth Korea (Honey Lee’s second runner up finish was close); Rio Grande, Puerto Rico (okay, this is just so obvious—Puerto Rico’s almost assured of a top 5 slot yearly); and Dubai, UAE (well, he can’t do much about this given the UAE’s Muslim tradition). Other countries, which may be allotted regular spots in the Miss Universe final selection are: Panama (for Mr. Trump’s projects in Panama City); Scotland (he’s got developments in Aberdeen); and Turkey (to support his interests in Istanbul). Of course, token spots may also be granted for Miss Universe sponsors, as in the cases of BSC (Thailand) and Mikimoto (Japan). To pageant fans, never ever forget that Mr. Trump is a businessman, a shrewd one. As a business partner, I’d even say he’s good. He knows how to match a partner’s generosity and kindness (quid pro quo)—and the easiest way for him is through his Miss Universe franchise.

I guess that’s all I am allowed to share. You know how things are run in this pageant now. As for me, my job here’s done—I guess. I’ve decided to tender my resignation after this whole thing is over. I am glad to have shared this with all of you.

Subject: Former Miss California sues over firing

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Former Miss California USA Carrie Prejean sued pageant officials yesterday for libel, slander and religious discrimination, accusing them of telling her to stop mentioning God even before her controversial remarks against gay marriage.

Prejean sued California pageant executive director Keith Lewis and actress and former Miss USA Shanna Moakler, who served as a co-director before resigning in protest of Prejean.

Prejean was fired in June by pageant officials who said she missed several scheduled appearances.

Her attorney, Chuck LiMandri, said that wasn't true, and Prejean was ousted because of controversial remarks in April during the Miss USA pageant that marriage should be between a man and a woman.

She was named first runner-up, and many believe she lost her shot at the Miss USA crown because of her answer.

LiMandri said Prejean filed suit only after he sought detailed information on what events Prejean missed.

"I wanted to give them every opportunity to provide the basis for those claims," LiMandri said.

He said he found no proof that Prejean missed events. "There were no contract violations," he said.

The lawsuit claims Lewis and Moakler both told Prejean not to mention God on her Miss USA application or at public events at least two months before she gave her anti-gay marriage answer.

The suit also claims Moakler and Lewis improperly revealed that Miss California USA had paid for Prejean's breast implants.

Moakler's attorney, Mel Avanzado, said in a statement that Prejean's lawsuit was without merit.

"More importantly, as everyone who watched or read her public statements is well aware, Ms. Prejean's unfortunate and bigoted statements are responsible for any public humiliation or damages to her reputation that she has claimed to have suffered," Avanzado wrote. "Ms. Moakler strenuously denies that she did anything wrong and looks forward to proving that in a court of law."

Prejean is also suing publicist Roger Neal, who handles press for Miss California USA and Lewis.

Neal said he could not immediately comment on the lawsuit.

The lawsuit accuses Lewis, Moakler and Neal of using Internet sites such as Facebook and Twitter to post disparaging remarks about Prejean.

The lawsuit does not name Donald Trump, who owns Miss California USA's parent organization and who in May refused to fire Prejean, a decision he reversed a month later.

The suit states Trump authorized Prejean's appearance on the "Fox and Friends" show in May and a Shape magazine interview, both of which were sighted by Lewis as unauthorized public appearances by the beauty queen.

The complaint does not state a specific dollar figure that Prejean is seeking. It claims she has been subject to public ridicule and humiliation and lost out on modeling work because she lost her crown. She has also suffered anxiety, depression and loss of sleep since her firing, the lawsuit states.

Theories Why Bianca Manalo Failed to Make it to Miss Universe Semis

Author:
P.E.

Filipino pageant fans and pundits all over were heartbroken when our very own Bianca Manalo failed to make it to the semi-finals of Miss Universe 2009.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The well-loved pageant of Filipinos and the most prestigious one at that has been snubbing the Philippine delegate for 10 years now! No Filipina was able to place in the semi-finals since Miriam Quiambao won first runner up in 1999. No Filipina was able to break the curse so to speak.

60 pageant experts of Global Beauties believed that our delegate Bianca Manalo is a semi-final material. They based their judgment on the preliminary competition of Miss Universe for swimsuit, evening gown and interview. They came up with their list of Top 15 who are most-likely to make the cut and Bianca is at no. 11.

Bianca was a crowd favorite in Bahamas. She rocked the swimsuit competition with her excellent catwalk skills and confidence that she emerged as the most applauded contestant of the night. But how come she was snubbed in the Top 15?

Here are my theories:

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

The Gift-Wrapper Blue Evening Gown. Every year, Filipino pageant enthusiasts get disappointed with the evening gowns of our delegates. The gowns are below mediocre and borders in hideous, old fashion and sometime hilarious. These gowns are even recycled by the Bb. Pilipinas organization. Talk about environment-friendly.

Bianca Manalo’s evening gown was no exception. It looks like a gift for Pete’s sake! The bow made it look cheap. No wonder Bianca’s confidence somehow dropped in the evening gown competition. And you cannot blame her because looking at what the other contestants are wearing, like Miss France, Miss Venenuela and Miss Kosovo, our evening gown really belongs to the lower half of the 84 contestants.

The Board of Judges. The preliminary judges (they are the ones responsible for the selection of the semifinalists) were divided in two panels. Both of these panels included members of the Miss Universe Organization who screen the girls to see who is -and who isn’t- appropiate for the job. It’s basically up to their “taste” and how they perceive each contestant.

The preliminary judges are:

* Mark Wylie – Best Buddies Talent Executive.
* Adriana Ching – Licensed attorney and a former real estate developer avid philanthropist.
* Todd Winston – Veteran of the hospitality industry and Vice President of Sales at Creative Promotional.
* Rosalina Lydster – Fashion designer for celebrities.
* Tiza Tjokroadisumarto – Director of Retail Operations for Michael Kors.
* Corinne Nicolas – President of Trump Model Management.
* David Friedman – Last Call with Carson Daly Executive Producer.
* Steven Schillaci – Talent Producer for many hit shows including American Idol.
* Mario Mosley – Hollywood Choreographer of Oxygen’s Dance Your Ass Off.
* Sarah Markantonis – Ambassador of Kerzner International Bahamas.

But of course, it’s unfair to blame the judges or to accuse them of being racists (because they did not pick any Asian candidate in the semis). They are the ones who were able to see the 84 contestants up close and personal.

So the delegates who were stand-outs in the swimsuit competition might have blown their chances in the evening gown competition and in the interview. Many were expecting Spain, Mexico, Russia and Netherlands in the semi-finals but surprisingly, Switzerland, Sweden, Croatia and Albania took the slots. The judges might have seen something special about them.

Since we cannot really point the finger to the judges, i must say that the evening gown per se caused Bianca’s downfall. Bianca’s performance was excellent. She’s confidence, she has the “it” factor, she’s vibrant and she got excellent catwalk skills. Not to mention that she’s tall and has a very nice porcelain skin. Bianca did her job above 100% and we are truly proud of her. Being tagged as the best Asian candidate this year is proof enough that Bianca is our best bet since 1999. It’s just sad that the Miss Universe judges did not include a single Asian in the semis.

THE NATIONAL DIRECTOR. The Miss Universe franchise holder in the Philippines is the Bb. Pilipinas organization headed by former Miss Colombia and the very first Miss International, Stella Marquez Araneta. Since 1964, she has been responsible for the delegation of Philippine delegates for Miss Universe, Miss World, and Miss International competitions.

In the annual Bb. Pilipinas pageant, she’s always the chairman of the board of judges. It is believed that when the top 3 or top 4 were picked, Stella will now decide who will compete where.

In the last 10 years, many pundits criticized her choice for the Miss Universe pageant. They believe that Zorayda Andam (2001), Karen Agustin (2002), Maricar Balagtas (2004), Gionna Cabrera (2006), Anna Theresa Licaros (2007), Jennifer Barrientos (2008) and Bianca Manalo (2009) were best fit for the Miss World pageant.

So the theory of wrong delegation may have grounds. Even Miriam Quiambao, she’s not supposed to compete in the Miss Universe pageant. But because the reigning Bb. Pilipinas-Universe at that time was dethroned, Miriam took-over. From being 1st runner-up in Bb. Pilipinas, Miriam ended up as first runner up in Miss Universe!

It leaves us wondering, what could have happen if Ruffa Gutierrez, Carlene Aguilar, Margaret Wilson and the disqualified contestant Sandra Seifert competed in Miss Universe?

In the past 10 years, we now have a clue on the kind of contestants that the Miss Universe pageant are looking for. They give weight to confidence, catwalk skills and how the ladies carry themselves in swimsuit and evening gown. Kinda like a top model material.

MEDIOCRE EVENING GOWNS. Correct delegation means nothing if our contestants are wearing the wrong gown. Anna Theresa Licaros was tagged as the most elegant contestant in Miss Universe last 2007 but look at her evening gown:
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

If it was Miss Universe 1978, then this gown should be a hit. But it’s year 2007.

And who could forget the white numbers worn by Maricar Balagtas (which was later worn by Precious Quigaman), Lia Ramos and Zorayda Andam:
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

According to reports, these gowns were made by Colombian designer Alfredo Baraza, imported by Stella Araneta to be worn by our delegates. Don’t we have good designers here in the Philippines that we need to import gowns from another country?

ABS-CBN AS NATIONAL DIRECTOR. Rumor has it that ABS-CBN is eyeing for the Miss Universe franchise in 2012 when Araneta’s contract will end. If this is true, then it’s good news. Perhaps, we need a new organization to handle our delegation for the Miss Universe pageant. It has been a decade already and all we got in the Donald Trump-owned pageant were three photogenic trophies as result of online votations. A new national director will indeed make a difference.

To sum it up, our beauty queens have all what it takes to win the Miss Universe crown. It was proven already with Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1974. With proper delegation, all we need is to believe that we can do it 100% pinoy. We need to bring out the pinoy power inside our contestants because they will not represent any other country but ours. Our ladies need to be trained by Filipino experts and our evening gowns should be made by Filipino designers as well.

Congratulations to Bianca Manalo for representing our country very well. She’s indeed the best Asian delegate this year.

A new Miss Universe has been crowned, many pageant fans are not happy with the results, and an online petition is going around the world condemning the results and demanding that MUO "provide a reasonable explanation on how [their] accounting methods proved Miss Venezuela to be the winner in this recent election." Interested in signing the petition?

Gee, I wonder who started the petition? Could it be Dominicans who felt cheated out that their delegate - a seasoned pageant veteran with a commanding stature and exotic features - was defeated by a much younger, yet ebullient and always cheerful brunette? Or could it be Puerto Ricans who are shouting fraud and claiming that the results might have been read in reverse order? It doesn't really matter who started the petition, because MUO will just ignore it. Besides, MUO is not obligated to reveal their accounting books to the public, unless the federal government demands it.

Anyway, there are far more interesting things to talk about, like the following stories. Fact or fiction? You decide. Though I can tell you that these "tales" were submitted to me by an extremely reliable source, and it's not someone from the CB coverage team!

1. When the top 5 had already been selected, MUO President Paula Shugart approached the judges on several occasions and with her hand she gave instructions on how they should vote. At one point, she was seen arguing with André Leon Talley. She kept insisting and telling the judges that they choose a beauty queen/model. Apparently, this wasn't the first time that Paula had an argument with judges; in 2007, some people noticed a disgusted Paula telling the judges that MUO wanted a queen with fashion sense.

2. From the stage, several candidates noticed Donald Trump hinting to Paula Shugart that the winner should either be Australia or Puerto Rico.

3. As soon as the telecast ended, a bothered and serious Paula Shugart told Lark-Marie Anton that they should wrap up with the picture-taking on stage.

4. Several delegates commented that they had prepared themselves to attend several activities only to be told that they couldn't go anywhere and that they should remain in their rooms to rest. There were some delegates who expressed their annoyance because they only visited one island, whereas most of the other delegates went to more than one island.

5. Miss Turks and Caicos Jewel Selver suffered from severe depression and many of the contestants tried to cheer her up so she could stay, but she decided to leave instead. What MUO said about the status of her health is completely false. She left because of severe depression caused for the most part by two Latin delegates - allegedly Miss Argentina Johanna Lasic and Miss Colombia Michelle Rouillard (photo).

6. Miss Colombia hardly spoke to the other Latin girls, and even if she spoke to them, she would speak to them in English. She almost never spoke with Miss Venezuela Stefania Fernandez, and when she spoke to Stefania in English, Stefania would not understand. She behaved like a total bitch and said that the pageant had been a big waste of time.

7. Several Latin candidates were surprised by the lesbian tendencies of Miss Malaysia Joannabelle Ng who in more than one occasion made suggestive comments to Miss Mexico Karla Carrillo and to other Latin and European delegates.

8. Miss Serbia Dragana Atlija is a lesbian.

9. During the coronation ball which was not transmitted online as MUO had promised, hardly any member of the press paid attention to Miss Venezuela. The most sought-after by the press were Miss Australia Rachael Finch and Miss Puerto Rico Mayra Matos.

10. Miss Spain Estibaliz Ribade was a witness to Miss Dominican Republic Ada Aimee de la Cruz's bulimia during the last two weeks of the pageant. Ada would sit at the table with her friends, but she would disappear for one moment. And when Estibaliz went to her room, she began noticing the toilet was full of vomit. Ada induced her vomit and told Estibaliz that the food always made her sick. Estibaliz was a witness to all this.

11. Magali Febles, the national director of the Dominican Republic, was scolded by the MUO staff because she would enter places where she was not supposed to. Many people saw her on several occasions talking merrily with Paula Shugart. She was also seen telling everyone that MUO should respect her for everything that she has done for the organization. And to give Mayra a hard time, Magali brought a young woman with whom Mayra had competed in Miss Puerto Rico Universe 2009. This woman's name is Ida Ibarra who represented the town of Dorado. Magali paid for Ida's travel and hotel arrangements but bringing her did not make Mayra lose her focus.

12. There were several candidates who went out with the Miss Universe security staff (not the Bahamian security staff, but MUO's own security staff). Miss Croatia Sarah Cosic was seen many times coming out of her room and entering the room of a MUO security guy who is Latino.

13. Many candidates complained about the late-night parties that the Asian girls were having. The Asian girls were Misses Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam and Indonesia. They would meet in one of the rooms to drink liquor until dawn.

14. Miss Mexico Karla Carrillo was very worried by what her national director Lupita Jones would tell her during their meeting. Karla said that she did not want to see Lupita because all throughout the pageant Lupita was pressuring her in a bad manner so she would qualify. Karla said that she's thinking of renouncing her Miss Mexico title because she can no longer stand Lupita's attitude.

15. Miss Dominican Republic and Miss Venezuela hung out a lot with each other and Miss Venezuela would tell her that she (Miss Venezuela) would be the winner.

16. Trump's favorites were Misses Croatia, Iceland, Switzerland, Sweden and Belgium.

17. After the coronation, the mother of Miss Dominican Republic began to yell. She was very bothered that her daughter did not win. Security staff had to calm her down and she was also seen insulting Magali Febles.

18. The candidates were told to leave the hotel as soon as possible.

I am sure there are more tales to come, so stay tuned!

Why do you think there was an Asian wipe out this year? Do you think it's is time to boycott the pageant, since the asian contingetn is one of the highest paying participants in terms of franchise fees?

This year will be remember as an "annus horribilis" in the history of the Miss Universe pageant. Miss Venezuela did not deserved to win the crown. Im conviced that Donald's hand must have played an important role selecting this woman. With the utmost respect but Stefania was not the most beautiful or intelegent of the final group. Her answer was vague and not convincing, if anything Puerto Rico, Australia and Dominican Republic had a more assertive answer.
