Actress and activist Monique Wilson will marry her longtime partner, banker Rossana Abueva, on Sunday in London.
The invitation card to the wedding reads: “After seventeen years together, come celebrate our seven year civil partnership into a more revolutionary commitment: marriage (in the eyes of the law), but really — the reaffirming of our radical union with those who have lived and laughed, cried and celebrated, rallied and protested, created and adventured with us these last seventeen years.”
The ceremony will take place at 12:30pm in Nottinghill in London. Same-sex unions became legal in the United Kingdom in March last year.
Wilson, who shot to fame as Lea Salonga’s alternate as Kim in the inaugural 1989 West End production of the hit musical “Miss Saigon”, came out as lesbian to Philippine media in November 2012.
She is director of One Billion Rising, a global movement against rape and sexual violence against women founded by Even Ensler, the playwright who wrote “The Vagina Monologues”.
Abueva is based in Singapore where she works as executive director for global product management at Standard Chartered.
In a speech Wilson delivered last year at St. Scholastica’s College when she received the Hildegarde Lifetime Achievement Award, she paid tribute to Abueva for her “love, generosity and support,” which she said “have been the wind and river of love that have been the motor, the fuel, the core of everything that I do.”
Wilson added, “(S)he has not only helped spread my feminist wings both artistically and politically, and to fly as high as those wings can take me – but also rides every challenge with me with a love that truly has no boundaries – and with a generosity of heart that has allowed me to keep opening my heart to keep loving others. I am so deeply and profoundly blessed to share and touch both the skies of revolution and art with her.”
Wilson, 45, will become only the second noted Filipino female celebrity to enter into a same-sex marriage overseas. In December, transgender singer-actress Aiza Seguerra married actress and beauty queen Liza Dino, in San Francisco, California.
