David Schine, 30, one of the most publicised Private in the Army, obtained a licence yesterday to marry Miss Universe 1955, Miss Sweden, Hillevi Rombin. She is 24 years old, living in New York in hopes of trying her luck in moving pictures. She was offered a part in “The Benny Goodman Story” immediately after her beauty contest triumph.

Mr. Schine now is back in civilian life. He has been president and general manager of the Schine hotel chain since 1950.

Close to tears, Leona Gage, disqualified as Miss U.S.A. (right) in Miss Universe 1957 because she was married and she had two sons, kisses successor, Miss Utah, Charlotte Sheffield (left), but she was ruled ineligible to compete in the final night because she wasn’t in the preliminaries.

Charlotte Sheffield participated as Miss U.S.A. in Miss World 1957, but she didn't qualify.

She was the winner of nine beauty crowns since 1953, including Miss Toronto of 1956. Miss Welch has blue eyes and honey blond hair.

This photo was published on 15th October 1957, one day after the final night. Miss Finland, Marita Lindahl is the new Miss World. She is a statuesque blond who makes her living by taking care of people’s feet, gave some special attention to her own today. The 18-year-old, a pedicurist by profession, was the tallest and heaviest of the 23 girls in the competition. She stands 5 feet 7 ¾ inches, weighs 136 ¼ pounds and is contoured 37-22¾-37. She was rewarded with a sports car and 500 pounds ($1,400).
The rest of the finalists are Miss Denmark, Lillian Madsen (2nd); Miss South Africa, Adele Kruger (3rd); Miss Tunisia, Jacqueline Tapia (4th); Miss Japan, Muneko Yorifuji (5th); Miss France, Claude Inès Navarro (6th) and Miss Israel, Sara Elimor (7th).

Most of the other contestants had arrived over the weekend, but Miss Japan is in good time. The contest takes place in London next Monday.

A new power couple has taken the stage.

A former Miss Argentina and former Miss Puerto Rico shocked and delighted fans by announcing their surprise marriage on Instagram.

Mariana Varela and Fabiola Valentín met at the 2020 Miss Grand International competition in Thailand, where they represented Argentina and Puerto Rico, respectively. After making it to the pageant top 10, the two beauty queens appeared to remain close friends on social media. What fans didn’t know is they were secretly dating the whole time.

The pair posted matching Instagram Reels showing moments from their relationship, including romantic walks on the beach, candid cuddles, champagne toasts and a proposal with gold and silver balloons spelling out, “Marry me?”

The main image of the post shows the pair outside of the city courthouse in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they married on October 28.

“After deciding to keep our relationship private, we opened the doors on a special day,” the caption reads in Spanish.

Fans, celebrities and fellow pageant figures congratulated Varela and Valentín on their picture-perfect love.

“Congratulations,” wrote Ghanaian singer and beauty queen Abena Akuaba, who won Miss Grand International 2020. “MGI brought together a beautiful union.”

“Thanks for all the love!” Varela wrote in reply to the well-wishes. “We are very happy and blessed.”

But Miss Sheffield, shown addressing the congregation at her Mormon church in Salt Lake City, Utah, thinks beauty is far more than mere externals. To her – and she should know – “It comes from within.” Following the Miss World contest in London, Miss Sheffield plans a speaking tour of European Mormon groups.

Miss Sheffield was chosen Miss U.S.A. after Leona Gage, Miss Universe U.S.A. 1957, was disqualified because she was married and had two sons.

Miss Universe 1957, Miss Peru Gladys Zender, will keep the highly coveted title even though it was established today that she is not yet 18 years old. The announcement that Miss Peru will retain the crown despite the fact that contest rules require entrants to be from 18 to 28 years of age was made by Lawrence Collins Jr., president of the sponsoring Long Beach International Beauty Confress. The word came after a tense-hour-long session with other beauty contest officials in a hotel room. An embarrassing situation had developed meanwhile at the Coronation Ball on the Lafayette Hotel’s first floor because Miss Peru was kept in her room on the third floor until the perspiring committee members reached their decision.

This photo was published on 19th July, the day of the final night. Miss US.A. 1957, Leona Gage (right), admits she is married to an Air Force sergeant by whom she has two boys. She said “We desperately needed money.… I hoped to get recognition…. Get good jobs.” This year, for the first time, a rule requires all contestants to be single. If her mother-in-law had kept still, Miss U.S.A. 1957 might have had a chance to go all the way. Today, Leona Gage stripped of her title and thousands of dollars worth of prizes, and she told this story: “My husband makes only $300 a month, we owe a lot of bills. We live in a rented house. We don’t have our own furniture. My children are healthy, but they need clothes.”

Close to tears, Leona Gage, disqualified as Miss U.S.A. 1957 in the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant, kisses successor, Miss Utah, Charlotte Sheffield (left), but she was ruled ineligible for tonight’s competition because she wasn’t in the preliminaries.

A police officer moves in to help Miss U.S.A. 1957, Leona Gage, who is among the 15 semifinalists of Miss Universe 1957 announced some hours earlier, as she breaks down while being questioned by the press about rumours that she is married and the mother of two children. Miss U.S.A. denied the rumours by broke into tears. The Miss Universe pageant rules automatically disqualifies any contestant who is married. Pageant officials late Thursday said Miss U.S.A. would remain in the contest pending an investigation.
