This photo was published on 21st July, one day before the final night. Miss Italy, Elena Fancera (left), spins her full skirt in a final twirl just before walking onto the stage for the opening night of the Miss Universe contest. All foreign contestants wore native costumes. Judging was confined, however, to preliminary selection of a Miss U.S.A. Miss England, Margaret Rowe (right), 19, who is described as having the kind of figure sailors whistle at, holds the trophy she won for being the most popular girl in a parade of Miss Universe contestants. The parade was witnessed by half a million people.
